At the end of the day, we never really know how much the kids have taken away from our activities. All we can hope is that they learned a little something about navigation, and that the next time they hear someone mention orienteering their first thought is about how much fun they had doing it themselves.

Some ideas for recruitment posters for CRLS

In small print, give their credentials and connection. Like, with Ethan, it would say Coach, CRLS team to USA Interscholastic Championships in Texas April 2017. And it would have his racing creds. And orienteering teacher, Cambridge Community Schools, and assistant director, NavGames summer program with MSYEP, and CSUS coach, etc.

What will it take?

At our summer program we talked about how orienteering thinking is useful in life. People talked about choosing life goals and checkpoints along the way. On another day, I gave them instructions about the presentations they will give on their projects next week. I asked them to be clear about the purpose of their project and relate it to Navigation Games' mission. Here I asked them, what is NG's mission? First answer: to get every kid in Cambridge to orienteer. That is correct. And that is a checkpoint along the way to NG's larger mission, which is to raise awareness about orienteering throughout the country. I talked about each of us might have a different relationship to NG's mission. For me, for example, my ultimate goal is world peace. And if you have more kids competing internationally and making friends (think JWOC 2020 in Turkey, for instance), then those ties of friendship may help toward world peace. I know that sounds silly but nobody laughed too hard.

We will have taught 45 orienteering classes in 28 days this summer, at Navigation Games. The teachers are 13 teenagers (paid by the City of Cambridge and NG) plus two staff. Also developed the lesson plans, documented them, made maps, trained for orienteering themselves, worked on publicity, designed future events, made videos.
