Girls Sports Day.
All 5th grade girls in public school in Cambridge (> 200) come to this.
Last year orienteering was (first time) one of several stations, and some of the girls rotated through.
This year, orienteering was the feature event, and we got one hour with the entire group of girls.
The plan was good - a score-O in teams.
The outcome was excellent - much positive feedback from the girls, and the director of the whole event said it was great.
There were some hitches with the execution, having to do with team assignment, but we will improve for next time.
The volunteers were AWESOME - thanks so much to Larry Berman, Sara Mae Berman, Jim Paschetto, Peter Amram, Giovanni Berlanda, Leah Williams, Ann Marie Mador, Keegan Harkavy, Nicolena Capello, Isak Prellner, Harlan Altepeter, Alex Rosenberg, Ethan Rothenberg, Pilli Cruz-de Jesus, Jeffrey Chen, Marina Carlson, Isabel Bryant, Rose Chalfin-Wakeley, and Sam Peck!
Thanks also to Dave for helping pull together equipment, Cristina for advice, Joel Burke for taking a chance on the program, and all the teachers, youth center staff, and Cambridge police officers who pitched in to chaperone.

Favorite moments include:

Introducing the team leaders (young people) and getting their teams to cheer for them. Similarly, announcing the results, and hearing how each team cheered as it was named, regardless of its placing.

Watching the teams circle up into smaller squads, listening to instruction from the volunteers and planning their strategy.

Seeing them all run off, could hardly contain them and had to say, "well Ok, I guess we're starting now -- GO!!!!"

Seeing them streaming back at the end, mostly by the time limit.

Asking how many had orienteered before and seeing the significant smattering of hands throughout the 200 girls. I think it made a difference in their enthusiasm, and showed in the results of many of the squads. Various ways I've worked with some of them: about 20 from the 5th grade program at Morse School; several from the COMPASS summer programs; several from after-school classes in Cambridge last year and this year. Critical mass, people!

Note

Today I could not go to the class at Kennedy-Longfellow. Marina took over, and met the children and Mrs. Carr inside, wearing the hat. Isabel and Vince also helped.

1. 3 teams set out 4 controls each, in 3 defined areas.
2. snack
3. kids go out with punch cards, 12 boxes, numbered 1-12 corresponding to control #'s
4. retrieve controls
5. free play

Marina said it went smoothly.
She said Vince was really good with the kids, such as getting them corralled after snack to do the next activity.
