Note

Isabel, Bill and I had a successful visit to UVM yesterday. We came away impressed with the CS and Honors College programs. The CS students were nice, geeky (in a good way) and approachable. The two CS profs we met were women, straightforward, practical, smart. The dean of the Honors College spoke to the parents while the admitted students visited with current students. I was super impressed with how they support the students - the main goal being for these kids to find their "tribe" -- other kids who love intellectual engagement. The Honors College students take one class together each of the first four semesters. They do an undergraduate thesis and get help finding good internships.

Isabel had a really good feeling about the visit. Her only two concerns are the cold weather and the lack of access to orienteering training. She seems open to taking up cross-country skiing, which might address the physical training piece - and the cold. I wonder whether the map generation program whose resulting maps I keep seeing posted on FB by Routegadget could generate training maps near Burlington if there is accessible forest. Even if it is private land maybe we could approach the landowner. And maybe we could hire Carl Childs to be the local coach to set up trainings. :-)

Ethan gave us a tour of the athletic facilities and we saw his room with a view. He's really busy right now, another week or so to the end of the semester. I am SO EXCITED that he will be assistant coaching at JWOC.

Orienteering race 54:37 [3] 3.1 km (17:37 / km)

A good effort for me - given my slug state - had to take a nap later.

Also, we brought two new people to orienteering: Martin and Louise from Dunkerque, France.
