Orienteering 2:00:00 [3]

Field trip; arrived at Boojum at 8:30 to start setting out controls. Kids arrived at 9:30; I was a bit late getting back from setting controls; the trip went until around 1:15.

This is the 4th or 5th year of working with the 5th grade at Morse school. It is the culminating trip of the year; previously we do orienteering on school grounds, and at Magazine Beach and at Fresh Pond. On this trip, the kids are in teams; we go together to "landmark" (on trail) controls, and the teams each have their own offtrail "team" controls. Those are coin envelopes hanging with flagging tape, containing puzzle pieces. We meet up at the lunch spot and put together the puzzle to find a secret message for hidden treasure. Then they do a white course with epunching (thanks CSU, Ed, Giovanni for the equipment!).

I want to rethink the approach to working with this particular group next year. More fun and games, and a strong focus on just a few key points over the year.

In other news relating to working with kids locally: the junior high I used to work with is interested in doing so again next year and I have a parent to help; and we're trying to find a staff sponsor for the high school orienteering club. Also, CSU people are interested in funding person to do after school work with younger people and I have some leads within Cambridge. Talked to Exec Director of Cambridge Community Center on Sunday.
