Had a great conversation with a junior and his dad from Virginia. He just built a permanent orienteering course as his Eagle Scout project. Very interested in doing more orienteering; running advanced courses at local meets. I encouraged him to come to national meets, and apply for JST. It was exciting to talk to them and hear the positive response; it really feels great to be able to describe the things that are going on: the standing team as an opportunity for those willing to commit to training; the JWOC team; Erin's approach -- and it's really cool to hear from people who are creating opportunities for others to orienteer. They started an O club at the high school.

I think getting on to the JST will be another competitive situation this year. People competing to make a commitment to train. I re-read the athlete contract tonight:

I will log at least 5 hours a week of physical training, with at least 50% of the training being orienteering and navigational specific training. The other 50% will be physical fitness and strength and conditioning. If it is not possible to meet the 50% mark of navigational training in a given week, I will do supplemental navigational training at home. I will make up the hours missed from physical orienteering training through running or another aerobic exercise.

I will attend all US junior training camps set up by the US Junior Coach in my respective region. (The regions are East coast, Central, West Coast and South.) If this entails a financial burden that my family cannot meet, I agree to communicate with the Junior Coach and/or the Junior Team Administrator, so that they can try to find a way to help fund the travel or find alternative options.
Please note that these camps will be set up to be as convenient as possible for the athletes, for example, working around school schedules. There will most likely be one training camp in the fall and one in the spring.

I will work directly with the US Junior Coach, communicating weekly by phone or email, and log my training every day. I will work with a local mentor who will support my training. The US Junior Coach and your local club will help you find a suitable and compatible mentor.

I will behave in a responsible and ethical manner when representing the team. I will be a good role model for younger juniors, and will respect and support my teammates. For the duration of this contract (1 year), I will abstain from drugs and criminal activity.

I acknowledge that training for a high level requires certain sacrifices at times, and I willingly agree to make those sacrifices to become a better athlete and fulfill my commitment to the Team.

I agree to share with the larger orienteering community, in one or more of these ways: Writing blog posts about my training and competition, doing interviews to help promote the sport, speaking to kids and parents at meets, leading training activities for younger kids, and/or helping out at Junior Team fundraisers.

I acknowledge that failure to comply with the above conditions may result in my dismissal from the US Junior Standing Team.
