work. later, class.
In class I learned more about evolution and development.
Learned that the "Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" concept actually slowed down the progress of science, because while it is kinda true, it meant that people just assumed ontogeny was all figured out, and didn't look into more mechanistic aspects, for decades. Also, people didn't appreciate that development is evolving too.

I learned that you can carefully cut out a section of egg, cover it with clear tape, and watch the chicken develop.

Started thinking about macro-evolution.

And about differentiation, morphogenesis and growth.

Also finished reading the excellent book "From DNA to Diversity. Molecular Genetics and the Evolution of Animal Design" by Sean Carroll, Jennifer Grenier and Scott Weatherbee. Recommended. Highly readable. Don't need to be a scientist to read it.

(I'm not keeping up with logging this category, at all...)

Phone meeting with Erin.

Mostly focused on new ideas for the fall. He'll be on the east coast September 18 to November 5th. Possible, probable and definite activities:

  • Harriman training the day before the Highlander
  • Michigan training Sept 28-29
  • Training camp in Boston area Oct 5-6
  • Willing to help NEOC and/or CSU develop a youth development plan
  • Canadian champs Oct 11-12
  • Boulder Dash Oct 19-20
  • working with a school in MA, I think Waldorf
  • Oct 26-27, training camp in Harriman
  • Nov 1-3 - to be discussed further

At the LAOC meet last weekend, Allen did a junior fundraiser, a fun mini sprint.
Erin got positive feedback about his course reviews. Everyone (not just juniors) was invited. They had a projector and showed maps and splits. Now, I've experienced some of these that are kind of interesting but also kind of boring - most people sit there passively while the winner goes over their route. It sounds as though Erin did it differently: he tried to draw out what different people did based on the splits, to get a dialogue going. Everyone could be part of the discussion. Erin was able to throw in some coaching tips that were relevant for things that were being discussed. Seems like a good paradigm; maybe he can spread the word so others conduct course reviews in a similar way.
