Met with the Morse school teacher to talk about our plans for the coming year. Influenced by some of Erin's ideas and the way that he worked with the team, I am interested in modifying what we do to include even more communication up front and in reflection, and see if the kids can be engaged to eventually host some orienteering events for other kids in the school. And also talk about setting goals, and the difference between process and outcome goals, again echoing Erin's work with the team. Themes: expansion of the program; delegation of what I do to others (we made progress on that last year with the teacher doing most of the in-class work); communicating with and empowering the kids; goals.
The teacher said that when the principal asked her kids at the end of the year what was most memorable for them about 5th grade, many of them said orienteering. And that was even though we had to cancel the big field trip at the end of the year due to rain! We did get to Fresh Pond though, in the fall, and the kids did all that work to learn about the JWOC team and make the big banner.
