Orienteering 1:26:27 [3]

Dave, Izzy and I did some urban navigation at a New England Orienteering Club score-O. Checkpoints were scattered around Medford and neighboring towns. One checkpoint was at the site of the fire fight in Watertown after the Boston marathon bombings, and the next checkpoint was at the house with the boat. Bullet holes still visible on some houses.

I suppose I may as well go ahead and mention that in the last three orienteering races (corn, corn, bomb-o), I have beaten Isabel in every single one of them. I still got it, babe. Maybe this is the start of my big comeback.

It is also true that she could not believe how slowly I was climbing hills on the bike ride there and back.

Met with the Morse school teacher to talk about our plans for the coming year. Influenced by some of Erin's ideas and the way that he worked with the team, I am interested in modifying what we do to include even more communication up front and in reflection, and see if the kids can be engaged to eventually host some orienteering events for other kids in the school. And also talk about setting goals, and the difference between process and outcome goals, again echoing Erin's work with the team. Themes: expansion of the program; delegation of what I do to others (we made progress on that last year with the teacher doing most of the in-class work); communicating with and empowering the kids; goals.

The teacher said that when the principal asked her kids at the end of the year what was most memorable for them about 5th grade, many of them said orienteering. And that was even though we had to cancel the big field trip at the end of the year due to rain! We did get to Fresh Pond though, in the fall, and the kids did all that work to learn about the JWOC team and make the big banner.

Awesome CSU training on an awesome awesome Ed Despard sprint map of the Longwood medical area in Boston. No field checking had been done yet but the map itself was great. There were a few missing underpasses and fences, but for trainnig that was no big deal, and it was really good sprint training: definitely had to do sprint route choice and good opportunity for some hard running (ie not the micro sprint choices you have to make on some maps with really detailed map reading). Thank you Ed! And also thank you Pia for making it happen!

Sent in check request to reimburse 19 juniors for overpayment of costs for JWOC training and competition.
Happy to report that those juniors made additional contributions totaling over $1500 toward the junior program; I hope to use that for junior travel and local programs in the fall.
Most of the juniors are still out $600 for JWOC costs; hoping that the Harriman meet proceeds can pay for some of that.
Heard from Krum with contacts for JWOC 2014 training.
Checked on how we're doing with uniform reimbursement receipts; there are still half a dozen outstanding; will send in the check request on Tuesday with whatever I've gotten at that point.
