Selection to Standing Team Process 2013 Questions

Readiness of the Athlete

Are they navigationally ready to take on the challenge of being on the team?
The requirements for the team are being able to navigate an advanced course or advanced controls with a strong orange ranking.
What evidence is there that shows whether they are ready or not?

Is the athlete physically prepared enough to take on the physical challenge of being on the team?
To be on the team the athlete has to agree to training at least 5 hours a week. The athlete also must meet, or stand a good chance of being able to achieve within a few months, running standards for both the woods and road/track and physical fitness standards. (See below for standards.)
What evidence is there that shows they are ready or not?

Physical Fitness guidelines:
Woods Running:
Men: 3k woods run with 100m of climb 20min or faster, 5k woods run with 100m-200m of climb, 30-35min.
Women: 3k woods run with 100m of climb 24-27min or faster, 5k woods run with 100-200m of climb 45-50min.

Running Ability:
Men: 5:00min for the mile, 10min for the 3k, and 18:30 for 5K.
Women: 6:30 for the mile, 13:30 for 3k, and 23:30 for 5k.

Physical Strength:
Men: 25-35 push-up in a row, 50 sit- ups in a row, 7-10 pull ups in a row.
Women: 10-15 push-ups in a row, 35 sit-ups in a row, 2-4 pull-ups in a row.

Is the athlete prepared to take on a role for the team, and represent it well? Are they mature enough to represent themselves and their teammates and OUSA with respect and integrity? (Did they sign the contract? Read their personal statement. Contact the references they provided.) What evidence is there that shows they are ready or not?

Has the athlete shown the ability to compete consistently on their competitive course? (Refer to rankings and race results.) What evidence is there that shows they are ready or not?

Does the athlete have the enthusiasm and will and dream to train hard for at least a year to be the best they can be and strive towards feats they did not even imagine possible? (Refer to their personal statement and references.) What evidence is there that shows they are ready or not?

Questions to be answered by the evaluators:

Why have we selected an athlete to the team?

Why did we decide an athlete was not ready to be on the team?

What standards are we sticking to that would keep more individuals from being on the team?

Have we clearly described the divide between who made the team and who did not and provided an explanation and evidence to support that decision?

Is there bias in the choices that we made? If so, what is it?

Have we fairly evaluated each individual and found out as much as we needed to know to make a fair decision?
