A beautiful day for an orienteering field trip!

Orienteering 3:00:00 [1]

Hanging controls, walking around with the kids, and control pick-up, 8am to 1pm

Julia (the teacher) with some of her kids.

I forgot to bring the compasses, and realized once I started hanging controls. So I called around and got my neighbor to retrieve them from my house and bring them to the school before the bus left. Yay for neighbors!

This is the third year I've done this particular field trip with this teacher. The field trip has two parts. First, teams find controls using a route they plan ahead of time, and kids on the teams play roles that they've decided ahead of time. Team controls are coin envelopes hanging from flagging tape; the envelopes contain puzzle pieces, and the puzzle points to the location of a prize. Along the way, there are several controls where the entire class meets up to check in and debrief. We talked about teamwork halfway through; one team didn't agree well on their plan, and got a little separated, which was frustrating to them. They regrouped and worked together well after that, and talked about their experience in our final debriefing session.

After lunch, we run a white course. Usually we do this with electronic punching, but it was a slight hassle to get NEOC's epunch equipment this year, so we went with old-fashioned pin punching. I figured at least they had experienced e-punching at the A meet last fall. I did have at least one disappointed kid on that front. They took the white course pretty seriously, speed-wise, which was a lot of fun to watch. And they cheered for each other.

I have started working on the map for the Long Beach orienteering event Friday June 13th.

I'm hoping I can find people either from LAOC or James Scarborough to select control points ahead of time, and also be there for the event on June 13th from 6 to 9pm.

Note

I taught the second of my pre-field-trip sessions at the 5th grade at Morse school this morning. The field trip will be on Friday. Today we covered folding, thumbing and orienting the map. The kids decided on roles for each student on each team.

In addition to my visits to the classroom, the teacher has been doing some great work with the kids. They did a computer session on contours. They planned out their routes and reviewed them within the teams. They played an orienteering board game. They worked with flash cards to learn feature symbols.

NEOC will be supporting the trip with $100 toward the bus! Yay!

I have a check for CSU for $130 from last fall's field trip to the A meet that never made it into their hands. Have to deal with that today!

Note

Rogaining committee meeting.
Next meeting in 2 weeks.

Topics
* No US Champs in 2012. North American champs will be applied for by Meridian Geographics.
* Dakota rogaine has applied for OUSA sanctioning.
* We support shorter forms of rogaining/score-O, even though we do not have a mechanism to sanction them. They are a good "gateway drug" to the 24-hour format.
* WRC2014: Course setter and mapper candidates identified.
* Upcoming 24-hour rogaines include CNYO (7/21), Dakota (8/18), WRC10 in Czech Republic (8/31), MerGeo in WA (9/29). Shorter formats are also listed on OUSA's calendar.
* GetLost!! will not be hosting score-O/rogaining events in 2012.
* Discussion of 12-in-24 format.
* We are generally favorable toward holding a WRC in 2015.
* IRF budget to be discussed further in 2 weeks
* We frown on solo participants, for safety reasons, unless there is a way to better narrow down where they might be for search purposes. Scary story from Eric S about what could have been a disaster with a person who wanted to go solo and fortunately was not allowed to do so, and had a lot of problems, and ended up in the hospital for a few days.
