Orienteering race 1:10:00 [3]

Ended up above the fold. To improve, I have to get physically fit and get some glasses I can see the map with. (I did a lot of stopping and removing my glasses this week.)

Today was great for Isabel in D14 - her best placing, 15th out of 84, and an overall 6-day placing of 31 out of about 71 who missed/mispunched no more than one day.

We stayed to watch the relays, which was a lot of fun. I love how engaged Isabel has been in spectating at this WOC. For the Middle finals yesterday, we were at home in the cool of our Annecy house with two computers - one with the video feed, and the other with the real-time dots-on-O-map display. It was great hearing Isabel speculate about why people were making errors.

Here we are in between our race and the relay, having pizza with Gail, which was lovely. For pizza aficionados, you might be able to see in the larger picture (click on this picture) Dave's pizza, which actually has salad on it, along with the more usual tomato sauce, cheese and ham. (My salad is just a salad, not a pizza.)

Orienteering race 1:20:31 [3]

Flowers for Algernon...

Had mess-ups at pretty much every control that wasn't on the final run-in.

Isabel did well - a pretty clean race. 24/79

Such a pleasure to watch Thierry -- you feel so safe with him, you know?

We rooted for Ali; we're so impressed with her.

Orienteering race 1:32:00 [3]

Well, my plan failed - I did not continue to rise in the rankings. Still above the fold, I think. Very hot, and I still feel SOOO tired.

Orienteering race 1:06:33 [3]

WOC Festival, day 3, Middle.

I think I made another big jump in the standings: 19th out of 116! I guess other people had trouble, because I certainly wasn't going fast. Felt incredibly fatigued, though, like you do at high altitude with no preparation. Felt like I could hardly move. Maybe that improved the navigation.

Isabel had trouble again, but found all the controls. Dave was very discouraged after his run.

better...
D45 at the festival
Isabel had trouble at four controls, so didn't do as well today. But I'm pleased she finished. Another great learning experience.

Orienteering 1:42:00 [2]

Isabel did really well on her course. She said it's good that she's been doing orange in the US (her official level is yellow), or she'd have been in trouble on D14. It took her 20 minutes to get to the first control - she took a trail off the road at a bend that didn't really show up on the map, instead of the bend she was aiming for; features along that trail were uncannily similar to the features along the correct, later, trail. Later in the day PG discouraged Isabel from learning to do distance estimation other than by feel. And from doing anything that she thinks her mother might possibly do. Which is fair enough, but not very prescriptive.

After the first control, she settled in and orienteered well. Her finish time is "above the fold".
