Took Dad to Doctors on Duty (a walk-in clinic) here in Santa Cruz. He was coughing, and the doctor told him he had tracheitis and should take some cough medicine. He also threw in an H1N1 vaccine and a pneumonia vaccine. Cost? Nothing. Damn Santa Cruz socialists.

Apparently people in Santa Cruz are working on a plan to print an alternative currency. (I learned this reading an article about it in the Doctors R Us waiting room.) It would enter circulation at medical and food providers. You pay $ for Santa Cruz cruzados (or whatever), but they don't enter circulation until you've used them (and had them stamped) for medical care or food at a participating provider.

I also learned that the biggest local currency in the US in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts: BerkShares in Great Barrington.
