Note

Temperature the last couple of days at the new solar collector for our hot water system:

Low & high air temps in F were:
31 41 12/8 (partly cloudy)
32 50 12/9 (rainy)
32 43 12/10 (windy)
23 31 12/11 (windy)

Temperature in the new holding tank that feeds our old hot water heater:

We think the drops in this chart (e.g., 12/9 morning, and evening of 12/10 and 12/11 and 12/8) correspond to showers being taken or warm/hot-water laundry being done.
The most heat is collected between 11:00 and 1:00. Heat was collected yesterday even though it never got above freezing outside. No heat was collected on the rainy day.

I think the next graph is the temperature at the heat exchanger (between the glycol feeding the solar collector and the water in the holding tank).

Note

The control panel for the system. The brain is the white box top left. Thermometers show temperature in the holding tank (blue) and temperature of the glycol coming from the collector and going to the heat exchange (red). If the latter is sufficiently different from the temperature at the collector, then the pumps turn on to pump the glycol solution through the collector and heat exchanger, and to pump water from the bottom of the new holding tank through the heat exchanger and back into the top of the new holding tank. Jamie is pointing to the water pump.

Orienteering 1:29:00 [3]

Ran most of the long course from yesterday at Great Falls MD, thanks to Eddie who handed the map off to me after I arrived at BWI yesterday evening.

Snow on the ground, but above freezing; it reminded me of when spring comes in Narnia. Snow and ice was falling from the trees and I wished I had a bike helmet to protect my head.

Wanted to go see the falls but didn't have time; I was playing hooky from the FASEB Board meeting and needed to get back.

This morning Francis Collins (the NIH Director) talked to us; pretty interesting. Lots of emphasis on budget and how much of that is for R01 grants, but other intriguing topics as well. Collins mentioned the Cancer Genome Anatomy project, which assesses mutations and copy number changes in cancer genomes, and whose data I've been looking at for work. He said that the recent stimulus package provided funding to tackle 20 more cancers (so far just 3 have been done) in this project. In all, money provided by the Recovery Act to NIH has resulted in 50,000 jobs created or retained over the next couple of years, spread across 12,000 funded research projects. He also talked about stem cells; proposed guidelines they published garnered 49,000 public comments, all of which had to be read and considered, and the final guidelines benefited from this feedback. I guess there will be a couple hundred human embryonic stem cells available for researchers in not too long, that meet these guidelines.

He mentioned some things I didn't know about. Like summer jobs for high school students and teachers to work in science labs. And "sustainable community-linked infrastructure to enable health science research." What is that?

Yoga 1:00:00 [1]

Cheated a lot but it worked because my legs were shaking after.
Fun to have Rhonda leading us!

Note

This was a good day for hanging out with orienteers! Breakfast with DeWeeses, Gagarins, DeWitts, Saegers/Ross, J-J, Kissy, et al, and dinner with Eddie. I was on such a roll I called a couple of my O friends on the west coast. At most events, I take so long on my courses that I end up with relatively little time to hang out with other orienteers, so this was super nice.

John (one of the phone calls) sounded disappointed in my lack of training lately. Because we're thinking of partnering for WRC 2010.

A few days ago I thought I was going to jump start my training with a long bike ride on Friday, and night-O Saturday. But then I had to give Izzy a ride because she missed her bus and that meant no bike ride, and we got to the night-O too late for me to work up the energy to do it. But at least with the yoga in Connecticut and orienteering in Maryland I did finally get started.
