Bicycling 8:00 [1]
weight:132lbs

Got home late last night. It's cold here. Went to DD for coffee & muffin this morning.

I miss Tucson. I miss the excellent fish tacos at Pico di Gallo.

Weight has dropped, perhaps due to dehydration. But I suppose it could be the week of exercise.

When we see him, John always has some new healthy lifestyle thing going on; this time he told me about "green soup" which has been the center of his diet the last few months. You take a bunch of raw vegetables and mix them in the blender. He says it's delicious and without trying he lost 10 pounds. I don't think the kids are going to go for it though.

Note

So far I only have photos from my (new) phone, so the quality is noticeably sucky. Nonetheless, the subjects are stellar. Cristina is wearing a shirt from New Zealand that she saw on some young orienteer while she was there, and sweet-talked it right off his back, all sweaty and everything. (She's washed it since.)

Note

I was bummed to miss the AP bingo. At first I thought maybe I was just unpopular - 6 people got Dave's signature but only 1 person asked for mine, and they'd already bingoed so I figured it was just out of pity. But then I realized that I was out orienteering pretty much from the first start to the last finish, so that explains why I didn't get to play...

Besides, Dave is easy for people to point out to each other. Although I will say there was still at least one instance of people confusing Dave Yee for John Lee at this meet.

While we were in Tucson, the kids were in Erie PA with their dad & stepmom. Isabel took this photo of their cat Shakespeare, who has been struggling with cancer and its treatments for about a year. The kids are thinking this was the last time they'll see him. Until he got sick, he was all black.

Orienteering race 2:28:00 [3] 9.5 km (15:35 / km)

Note

F45 was a tight race: 15 minutes difference between the slowest and fastest of 7 women over 2 days. I was impressed by Deb Humiston, who seems particularly speedy these days.

I was glad to meet Margaret from San Francisco, who was also doing blue. Nice to have company.

One of the Tucson Jeffs. I tend to get their names mixed up, but I think this is Brodsky. In the background is Mark Parsons' party BBQ pit.

Cristina's friend um what's his name - Joe? He lives a couple blocks away from us in Cambridge, but we met in Tucson.

Note

Not well timed, but here's a photo of Tucsonians Mike, Christine (not sure if I spelled that right), and Peg at a nice vegetarian restaurant in Tucson. Mike & Christine are going to Estonia for the rogaine in September. Peg has correctly pointed out to me that the rogaine committee probably should have done more to try and get US teams signed up for that rogaine.

Orienteering race 4:10:00 [4]

1:06 on green. 2:40 or so on vblue. :30 on sprint. lots of friends & a couple relatives.

Orienteering 40:00 [3]

Time is a guess. SUPER fun course in a Tucson park, where the saguaro cacti were mapped and very useful to triangulate off of on the run. Running was sweet, soft but resistant ground and low bushy stuff to jump over and prickly stuff to avoid. Lots of friends were there!

What I learned today and yesterday was to try and find points on the landscape (like the saguaros) that I can use similarly... Also yesterday got the idea that I want to make sure and estimate distance, and use the compass - sometimes going straight and checking off features while knowing the distance should work pretty well. And as usual, the more climb I avoid the better, which of course is at odds with going straight. Anyway, I'm looking forward to tomorrow!

Walking in the woods 30:00 [1]

Trail-O. I was determined to be careful and deliberate. I used the compass more than I have in the past, often taking multiple bearings. And I did the distance estimation, and matched as many features as I could. It turned out pretty well. 2 wrong. 1 of those I knew was wrong as I walked further down the path. The other one, I think I missed seeing one of the controls, and mistook one of the controls from the next (timed) control for one of mine. This seemed much less "random" than other times I've tried; more things made sense.

Bicycling 1:00:00 [2]

To Leif's house and back. Lots of steep hills, as I was cutting across the foothills. Got off and pushed the bike up a few of them. Leif and I programmed the controls for the A meet, and I took possession of a bunch of epunches and the master clock control. I feel all powerful.

Bicycling 2:30:00 [3]

into tucson & back out under a full moon
