Tomorrow morning I'll meet with teachers and the curriculum director for a program I've not previously worked with in Cambridge: the Compass summer program, run by Lesley College and staffed by student teachers and mentor teachers. About a third of the kids have special needs. This summer I have the opportunity to work with kids in grades 1 & 2. The first work I did with schools in Cambridge was that age level, so I'm excited to get back to it. Previously I approached it using visuals and stories so kids could "get it" about what a map is. I used the
USGS Map Adventures kit to teach this - a story about a girl who goes on a balloon ride above an amusement park.
I've been talking with CSU, and keeping NEOC in the loop, about the possibility of starting some after school classes in Cambridge in the fall. This is a way to jumpstart - both developing the curriculum and potentially finding some teachers to staff it. I like the idea of starting to get connected with a teacher training college - seems like a good place to spread the word about orienteering as a way of teaching things in schools.
and just saw that Ed said he'd make a map of the school grounds. People are so great.
