Note

Here is some of the feedback we have gotten this year:

That I am "smothering. Smothering extinguishes the flame of enthusiasm in others."

"Barb has a personal view of junior orienteering that she wants to impose on others. She is not interested in building consensus. There is no room for anyone else."

"I don't believe there is a JTESC. There is just Barb. Guy is not willing or able to stand up to Barb. He is the enthusiastic mouthpiece. Erin is patient and nice. Everyone else who used to be on JTESC has been driven away by Barb's relentlessness and smothering."

"Erin is a really nice guy who I think cannot withstand the relentlessness of Barb. Maybe Erin has his own ideas. I don't know. Maybe he used to have his own ideas. I saw somewhere that he spends an hour on the phone each week with Barb. I don't think his own ideas could survive that."

"A decent case could be made that Erin is not only ineffective, but he is hurting junior orienteering in the US."

And so on. Total ignorance of the fact that Erin created this job and the vision; ignorance of all the big thinking he's been doing about starting junior programs in clubs, and the fact that he was hired to do that, along with the coaching of the standing & JWOC teams. And a pretty radically different interpretation of reality than I have in terms of what has been accomplished over the past year and a half.

It's amazing to me - we've worked pretty hard to keep people up to date and share what is happening, and I just can't see, with all that information, how someone could possibly get these ideas.

Note

Well, at the moment I am finding that getting training in doesn't happen in the face of work, parenting, and volunteering. Things are pretty intense. . . . Priorities are my kids, work, OUSA juniors, then training. That's just how it is right now.

On a positive note, I am learning discrete math more deeply than I ever did before, and finally understand the precise definition of assembler vs compiler, and got a good review at work last week in spite of the working-from-JWOC experiment that I carried out last summer.

My learning for today...
From Dr. Steven Jones, via my sister in law:

13 Skills for Culturally Competent Communication

Genuinely greet others and make an effort to pronounce their name accurately.

Use “I” statements.

Listen to understand vs. listen to respond.

Accept the speaker’s viewpoint as true for her or him.

Consistently operate in a “learner” mindset seeking to gain and reflect on a 360 degree view.

Manage both “intent” and “impact.”

Put your stake in the ground; be open, and willing to move it.

Lean into discomfort. Give space, grace, and be willing to have the tough, candid, and caring conversations.

Accept working through conflict to its resolution as a catalyst for learning.

Be willing to admit mistakes and areas of growth.

Get to know more than the 10 percent you see through increasing your knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of diversity, privilege, countering oppression, and building inclusion.

Seek to continually raise the bar for yourself, others, organizations, and the communities you serve.

Celebrate successes and have fun!
