Itinerary / host families Swedish orienteer.
2014 calendar fix request
Edited safety doc, emailed PGoodwin
Reviewed action items, emailed Erin

Originally I agreed to be administrator for 1 year. I extended it to two, and it is time to start thinking about the replacement who will take over next fall. I hope that by then some things that Erin has pushed for will be happening at a steady level. Already in year two some things are easier, like the JST application we spent so much time on last year, and largely stands for this year.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1]

Went to Baldwin Hill with Linc and Dave. Linc and I did part of a narrow corridor-O that Erin set.
Linc is currently running orange at local meets, yellow at A meets. Moves up to orange officially in 2014.
He is a good, careful orienteer. Tends to have consistent results, and perhaps a next step for him is figuring out how to simplify.

Note

All 6 of the medalists in F20, M20 (i.e., the national classic champions) were either coached by Erin on the 2013 Standing Team, or were coached by Erin on the 2013 JWOC trip, or both.

Three of the junior boys chose to run M21 instead of competing in M20: Ethan Childs, Matt Stout, Zac Barker. All three are both on JST 2013 and competed for the USA at JWOC.

Other of the juniors coached by Erin on a team who "ran up" instead of running their age category (and a shorter/easier course): Isabel Bryant (JST, JWOC), Evalin Brautigam (JST, JWOC), Melanie Serguiev (JDT, JWOCTour).

Some new JDT members joined this weekend.

phone call with Guy & Erin.
phone call with two people from SLOC & Erin - awesome. Erin is really good, you guys. SLOC is interested in trying something ARK-like, ARK-lite. Don't have a lot of volunteers or time, but do have club resources and are in good financial shape. Potentially willing to hire part time student or other person for $2-3k to run an 8-10 week program once a week for kids age 6-10. We'll all think about it and get back together for another conversation in a few weeks. Erin to draft the lesson plans or whatever, the detailed activities, and the equipment list (cones, ...).

Note

Erin has been in town since Friday, and it's been great to have him around. He did training with NEOC kids over the weekend. He and I, especially he, have been working on OUSA junior stuff. JWOC selection, training camps, JST for 2014, reports, grants, A meet activities, uniforms, ... He's heading to Canada tomorrow, like everyone else in our house I guess, but he'll get there in time to hang out with Mike Waddington and ARK kids in the afternoon. Today he's going into Morse School to meet this year's crop of 5th grade orienteers. We also have phone calls with Janet and the grants committee and Orienteering Illini today. Yesterday we talked with Guy, and with Becky (about 4 training camps). And he went to Isabel's soccer game and saw her score the first goal of her high school career. The day before we spoke with a very promising 15-year-old girl from TX who would be an awesome recruit for the JST and eventually JWOC team.

With Anna and Suzanne living in the house now, we have a pretty high concentration of orienteers. Over the weekend we had Anne W too. And lately there have been occasions for visits from the CSU crowd; it's just awesome. CSU training at MIT tonight, with dinner chez nous, Anna hosting, after.

Lots of Admin stuff has been going on but not logged, but figured this was worth it.
First exercise with the new crop of 5th graders. There are just 26 of them, in two classes, which is actually pretty exciting. I love working with 5th graders. And with 1st graders, and 2nd graders, and... I forgot to ask them the most important question: what was it like working as a team? What worked well? What didn't work well? And validate everything.
They went in pairs, did a white course on the school grounds, using Ed's map.
They had fun except for 2 kids.
I love talking about it afterward. I love how energized they get. I love how fun orienteering is.

Learned a lot of cool stuff.
