swim 52:44 [1] 0.05 mi (17:40:50 / mi)

the gps doesn't really do that great of a job underwater.

swim 1:03:48 [1] 0.16 km (6:36:16 / km)

Snorkeling at some place with a really long Hawaiian name, also called two step. Lots of people at this one as it's easy to get to, but most of them didn't get very far out so it wasn't crowded in the water. Lots of fishes, and the rumors said there was a turtle around in the morning, but we didn't see him.

Carol: Let's go snorkeling. There's this awesome place, but it has a hike to get there.
Greg: Ok, how far?
Carol: Two miles or so.
Greg: ok.
...
Greg at the trailhead: if we're going snorkeling in the ocean, why did we just park at 1300 feet?

edit:
Carol at breakfast Friday: that's not how that conversation really went!
Greg: no?
Carol: ... it was 1400'

swim 1:35:52 [1] 0.39 km (4:03:56 / km)

It was indeed pretty awesome. Lots of coral getting eaten by lots of yellow fish.

hiking 1:08:28 [1] 3.03 km (22:37 / km) +395m 13:41 / km

Going back up was less awesome, but at least it was really sunny and hot.
5 PM

swim 57:31 [0] 0.08 km (11:24:43 / km)

Nighttime snorkeling with manta rays. This was pretty sweet. We went out a little bit into the ocean on a tour boat with a floaty scaffold floating off the back with lights on it, and the lights attract plankton, and the plankton attract the manta rays. Everybody jumps in and holds onto the scaffold, then the manta rays swim around right below you. We only had one manta ray show up a couple times, so not the nonstop manta-fest it sounded like it is sometimes, but still pretty cool. Lots of other fishes there the whole time too.

hiking 1:44:16 [1] 2.59 km (40:19 / km) +44m 37:10 / km

I got up at 4 to go take pictures of some lava (you can just see red glowy smoke, but it's cooler than daytime grey smoke or nighttime red rainy smoke), then we drove CCW around the island from Hilo back to Kona. Stopped a few places to check out some ocean, and this was a wander around a botanical garden.

hiking 1:51:46 [1] 6.39 km (17:29 / km) +169m 15:26 / km

Did the touristy hike around Kilauea Iki, around the crater along some jungley bits then back through the middle of it.

hiking 18:02 [1] 1.46 km (12:23 / km) +15m 11:46 / km

hiking 36:20 [1] 2.06 km (17:38 / km) +15m 17:01 / km

Down at the end of the road in the park, almost at sea level. It was 20 degrees hotter here than up at the top of Kilauea (4000'). Hiked out onto the lava fields a bit to see some petroglyphs carved into the lava flows.

run 3:32:46 [3] 19.97 km (10:39 / km) +390m 9:43 / km

We ran the Napau crater trail in Volcano NP, out to the point where they block it off because of eruptions. The first 2/3s is awesome open lava flows, the last bit was super dense jungle "trail", which we had to hike most of. Never got close to the current eruption, but we passed a couple huge old mile+ wide craters.
