hiking 2:00:00 [3] 8.0 mi (15:00 / mi) +400m 12:59 / mi

Easy hike up the backyard mountains with the posse. Some snow on the ground, but pretty hot in the sun.

skate ski 54:03 [3] 13.14 km (4:07 / km) +347m 3:38 / km

Pre-turkey ski with Dan up at Auburn. They groomed the trails with just the snowmobile, so it scraped off the leaves and sticks from the windstorm and was actually really nice conditions. Also I finally took off the summer wax, which helped a wee bit.

dp intervals along the power lines. The latest storm sort of fizzled, but there's still plenty of snow in the woods.

Yay winter. Chasing Jonis around Auburn. So apparently the gigantic warehouse building they're building in the middle of the Boreal parking lot is going to be a year round freestyle snow park. Woot indoor-summer-ski-o.

skate ski 30:00 [1] 2.0 km (15:00 / km) +50m 13:20 / km
shoes: mystery mix-n-match

slow lap checking out some of the woods for ski-o trails.

Moved up again, so back with Jonis, Beat, and Joseph. A couple controls then a crazy butterfly mess in the middle of the course, with one long and one short leg. Beat and Joseph dropped us right away, and Jonis and I had different forks, but did the long loop together. The map was busy in the center with numbers and circles and duplicate controls (and it was raining), so it was hard to follow the course by looking at the lines. I was mostly reading ahead by searching for the next control number on the map and then just running there. But I got to 14, looked at the map to see which control I was at so I could find the next number, and the 16 number was pretty close to the 14 circle, so I read that and ran straight to 17. My bad. I made up some time on Jonis there though.

orienteering race 18:07 [3] *** 3.55 km (5:07 / km) +124m 4:21 / km

GG Sprint 5, McLauren Park
The dsq in the morning meant I got relegated down a bracket, so in the finals heat with Carol, Francois, and Matej. Francois had bailed to catch a plane, and Carol was trying to pull the tired excuse, so Matej and I were back and forth for the whole thing. Snuck ahead of him by blind luck on the wrong-side-of-the-house control, and held him off until the finish. Ended up 9th for the overall tournament.

Awesome weekend, the four-person mass start bracket format is super fun, since it naturally sorts you into people your speed so most of the races end up head to head and tight. A few logistical problems within the timing and start times, but nothing that actually detracted from the racing. The maps were all fine and the courses were excellent. 106 controls in a weekend, not too bad...
