Streamer day #2. Much easier today, as all the controls were close by (though they were a lot more technical), and I also forgot to refill the water jugs so the pack was a lot lighter. Scott came up from SF to vet a few controls, and Jonas came over and ran a random course that I made up on the spot. I'm pretty sure that makes this the largest training day Truckee has ever seen.

On an unrelated note, its frickin freezing out here Mr Bigglesworth, and cloudy, and we're supposed to get 1-2 inches tonight. of you know what. heh.

Epic streamering day at Burton Creek. Got about half of them, and fortunately the far half so most of the distance. The other 50 are all in a nice dense area. And the 305 happily recorded eight hours of tracking without any sign of killing the battery, which is longer than I figured it would go.

Also wanted to see if the shoulder was ready to take a beating so I could start to get up high before china, so I threw three gallons of water and the big camera into the daypack and hauled that along. Ok at first, though I was riding most of the weight on the other strap and hip belt, then it started to get a little sore after about five hours, but actually started feeling ok again towards the end. I had drunk a gallon and a half by then, so I guess it was getting lighter.

late and lazy ride across TD, just before dark. gotta time these things just right, as the temperature seems to be swinging 60 degrees for the last couple days...

Test running the long blue for next months meet. Not even streamers yet, so pauses at the control locations to check features. Mostly good, though I found one craptastic section of the map that I had a couple controls in, but couldn't tell if the map was wrong or I was just lost, so I did those legs a couple times from different directions, which is where the extra time and distance come in. Turns out I was mostly just lost. Also there's an excavator and a 50' wide hole in the ground where my start triangle used to be. Sigh.

mapping 1:00:00 [1] **

A giant slurpee and many, many, many brain freezes later I was good as new, so I stopped at Northstar on the way home to finish up mapping the last corner of the map. Think I've given up on the part of the forest they're working on now, as they seem to work random days in there, and its probably bad form to run the course through an active control burn. Not to mention what it does to the SI boxes.

Despite my best efforts at tripping over everything in sight for the last half hour of this mornings course, I never managed to hurt the shoulder, so I figured I'd go give it another try on the skis. Didn't work. Which I guess is a good thing.

A lap and a half around the lake to warm up a little. 26 degrees this morning! Fortunately much warmer by race time. Hit the start line with 10 seconds to spare.

Donner Pass TT. From the west end of the lake up 40 to the summit next to Sugar Bowl. All uphill, but the grade is ok, did most of it sitting. Legs felt awesome today. 30 second interval starts, but the four people in front of me were slow so I passed them before the first mile. Then had nobody in sight for the whole middle section, which kind of sucked. Finally caught the next pack at 2.5 and chased them up to the top. Crazy windy for the second half, especially across the creepy bridge at the top, but maybe that was a good thing because it was thrashing all them skinny kids. Finished 23rd / 60, and super happy with the time as it was about two minutes faster than I've ever done that climb before.

TD. The cutthrough between the xc and downhill areas involves tunnelling through about 20ft of more than head high bushes, and halfway through tonight I spooked something huge and black five feet to the side. Scared the crap out of me and I thought I was about to get mauled by a bear, but fortunately it was just a me-sized deer. Still ran just in front of me, close enough to touch, but no drive-by clawing.
