so its getting hot enough around here that I need ice cubes again, but I went in the freezer today and they had all evaporated, leaving little piles of white powder in the bottom.

new chainrings. woohoo. got an email out of the blue last week from Ron Grayson who wanted his chainrings from RAAM back (which I thought I paid him for...), apparently they were 'vintage' and needed to restore a bike he's working on. although he probably should have mentioned that before I spent three years sharktoothing them to death. anyway got some new ones and went out for a quick ride to check that they worked and see if I need to replace the rest of the drivetrain at the same time. all good.

skate ski 25:00 [2] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

warmup

skate ski race 2:07:00 [5] 42.0 km (3:01 / km)

Mammoth Marathon

Awesome race. Conditions were just about perfect, I felt great, and the skis were nice and fast. You guys would be so proud, I must have V2'd 3/4s of the whole thing. Not sure what to blame it on, either the jalapeno and onion pizza for dinner yesterday, or watching Braveheart in the motel last night.

Course was three laps, not equal though. Lap one is up a steepish km long hill right out of the start, then around a big figure 8 at the top. lap two repeats the figure 8 then drops back down the big hill. and lap three is back up the hill plus a figure 8 plus back down.

So lap one I started towards the back, but I'm starting to recognize the people at these races so I know where I should be, and it worked out just right. Hit the top of the hill at the back end of the second pack, not all the elite guys but all the locals. Hung on to them for half a figure eight but eventually dropped off the back with an old guy and a girl. Finished the lap with the three of us. Had some close calls on the last part of the eight where it comes down the hill in the woods. They've got some real quick S curves with trees close in on each side, which were a bit dodgy on the ice.

At the second lap start I dropped back for a gu but caught back up to the other two pretty quick, they seemed like they were dragging on the flats. I was making up a lot of time on them on the little rolling hills, but towards the end of the figure eight is another big climb before the wicked descent back to the start, and they dropped me going up the hill. Caught up easily on the downhill, and tailed them down the big hill through the start for lap three. There was a pretty awesome outside turn on the downhill thats narrow, off-camber, icy, and completly exposed. Almost skidded off there in a tuck.

They dropped me again going up the long hill out of the start, but I caught up on the flats after about a third of the loop. Not sure what I wanted to do, because if I hung on their tail I'd get dropped again on the uphill, catch up on the downhill, but then have to get around both of them before the finish, which would be pretty crazy on the narrow descent trail. Or I could try to pass them on the flats and try to get a big enough lead before the uphill to hold them off until the turn around. Just as I was trying to figure out what to do we hit a sunny patch and they both stalled a bit, so I jumped in the tracks and shot past. They hung on for a km or so, but I finally got a gap and then had another 5km or so before the hill to stretch it out. Hit the bottom of the climb with 200m or so of lead, but its about a 1.5km hill so they had lots to work with. I was ready to pass out by the turnaround (it is 9000ft afterall) but I hit the top with about 10m of lead left. It was enough though, I hit the downhill at full tilt and never saw them again. Passed a couple other people that looked bonked on the way down, and finally caught up to a guy near the bottom where it drops into the cabins near the finish. Couldn't get by him (I could barely stay on the trail as it was) so I stuck on his tail until it flattened out 20m before the finish, then tried to double pole past him on the side. I think I made it, he's not sure, and we both forgot to ask the finish guys who actually crossed first. So we'll see when the results come out.

So super fun race. Sunny and warm, but the trail was great the whole time, and didn't slush out on the third lap like it has in past years. Not sure where I finished overall, but I did win the much coveted Flatlander Award, which since the race is at 9000ft, is kindof a pity award for the winner of everyone that lives below 1000ft. Silly locals. I got a [big] bottle of wine though.

skate ski 1:05:00 [2] 10.0 km (6:30 / km)

Too nice of a day to not go ski some more, so I went back up for another loop around the top. Crust skiing rules were in full effect, so I did some wandering through the woods and out on the lakes.
