road bike 1:53:00 [3] 30.4 mi (16.1 mph)

Didn't get out until noon, and traffic was freaking me out today. I think I've lost the iron nerve you need to enjoy a lovely daytime LA ride. Felt pretty good though, I'm starting to remember this road bike stuff.

Note

so if you leave a rubik's cube on a sunny california windowsill for 5 years and five out of the six colors fade to white, which one is left?

also note that this makes it much easier to solve.

orienteering 55:00 [4] 7.0 km (7:51 / km)

Tiomila Leg 5. map. Went out about 4:30am, it was just barely getting light. I needed the headlamp for the first half to read the map, and then not at all for the second half. I would call it a very good run, considering how often I get to do real orienteering these days. Came in high on the first one, and lost maybe 30 seconds because I couldn't remember what control flags looked like. Took the super safe route around to 2 (aka via 4) but I nailed it and it was almost definitely faster for me than going straight. No problems with 3-8. Going to 9 I went left to try to hit the big yellow swamp, which was seemed a little risky after getting thought all the green but I hit it ok, then down along the long blue swamp. Spiked 10, and by this point I had caught up to a bunch of other people on my leg. They were somewhat distracting and I made a couple little mistakes in the circle on 11-13, nothing too bad, just a few seconds here and there. Managed to get some distance on them coming down the hill out of 13 (they were old), then took the trail high to 14 and cut in after the green, but hit the control high and spend 30 seconds up on the boulders above it. One of the guys I passed caught up to me again here, and I chased him in for the last two. Overall it went much cleaner that I was expecting (probably because it was light out), and I'm really happy with it. A great weekend with CSU, totally worth the 12000 miles crammed in a plane seat.
