skate ski intervals 1:11:25 [4] 19.8 km (3:36 / km) +250m 3:24 / km
shoes: 10 atomic red cheetahs

Intervals with Jonis up at ASC. He was wicked hung over, so I was winning each one handily. The snow wasn't that great up there, but it wasn't bad either. There are certainly better sections at TD, but there are also much worse sections, mostly just since TD just has a lot more distance to get to the good stuff.

its like 55 degrees outside, and its only 11am. this is probably great for our copious snowpack.

Checking out whats left of the snow in Tahoe. Found Jonis in the parking lot, so we skied the valley out and back, then up crabtree. For the most part its in ok shape, but they're not tilling at all so some spots are pretty icy. Only one section of 100' of dirt to get onto crabtree, but they put down a row of rugs to walk across.

Speedy morning ski around the house before catching the bus to boston. No airplane problems coming home, and got two first class upgrades (sat behind Conan on one of them).

VT ski! Groomed up the front yard and did a bajillion laps. Last week's 14 inches of snow got rained down to 2, but it still groomed up quite nicely. Played some tag with Samantha, and got told that using my poles was cheating, so a few km in the middle was no poles.

skate ski long 3:54:21 [3] 51.79 km (4:32 / km) +1066m 4:06 / km
shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Long ski! I figure I should probably do a lot of these this year, since the racing will be skewed towards many marathons (birkie, great ski race, yellowstone 24) vs little ski-o (tahoe, us champs) this year. Felt good for the first couple hours, but by noon the snow had warmed up and gotten gummy and it started being work.

Also got new boots yesterday, new Rossi skate boots, which I wore today. It did occur to me that a long ski was not the best time to break in new boots, but I survived with only one giant blister under my heel. I think I could probably wear real socks inside these, which might be good since they have less padding then the Fischers.

skate ski 1:15:03 [3] 17.32 km (4:20 / km) +166m 4:08 / km

Easy putz down to the end of the valley, then a scrappy ski up the ungroomed road on the other side. Parts of me are a little sore after the weekend, but I think that's more from middle-seat airplane time than from the running.

orienteering race 43:09 [3] *** 6.34 km (6:48 / km) +21m 6:42 / km

Chilly spriddle distance. Snow on the ground, which was crunchy and cold, and the running was half through open fields and half in a dark greenish patch of new forest. Which would have been all fine, except for the couple times we had to wade through ten foot wide ankle deep streams, which made the entire adventure more adventurous. No problems with navigation though, and felt pretty good running even with the numb feet. or maybe because of.

Relay Champs. Started in the mass start, everything was great for the first half, it wasn't too hard and the four of us (dvoa/chicago/mnoc) were all together the whole time. Then on 9-10 I made it halfway, got confused counting how many lake inlets we'd been by, got all messed up by the random tent platforms that were maybe or maybe not mapped, and wandered around for a couple minutes. Oops.

night-o champs. a couple inches of snow on the ground, which was mostly mud anyway, so footing was pretty awesome. only actively snowing for a couple minutes, otherwise just dark and cold. mostly just jogging, and made some pretty sweet mistakes.

Easy rest ski. Back to seasonally normal skiing temperatures: in the 50s. Now off to ohio, where it sounds like its fairly cold and miserable. Sadly my 5000-lumen-headlamp-of-awesome™ hasn't arrived yet, so I'll have to play like regular night-o.

They busted out the big groomer to start packing some of the higher trails, so I did a loop up there, some of which were groomed and some were just tracked. Funny snow temps, some sections seemed a little too warm for the blue wax, while others were definitely too cold. Silly sunshine.

skate ski 1:06:00 [3] 14.07 km (4:41 / km) +196m 4:23 / km

Warmer, with real wax today, which was awesome. Still well below blue wax cold in the shade, but the sunny parts were fine (and we have plenty of those) and the air was up in the high 20s. My back now hurts in many places after the weekend, though none really too bad. There's a pretty huge fire going somewhere nearby, so the close end of the trails was totally smoked in. You'd think two feet of snow would be enough to stop any sort of forest fire (controlled or otherwise), but its not.

orienteering race 21:48 [3] *** 4.06 km (5:22 / km) +48m 5:04 / km

Race #5 at SF state university. Lots of long legs one way or the other around buildings, nothing too exciting. Then again my back hurt quite a bit running this morning so I wasn't pushing too hard, so I had lots of map reading time which might have made it easier.
4 PM

skate ski 36:33 [3] 6.25 km (5:51 / km) +100m 5:25 / km
shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

We got two feet of snow at home Friday night, so the ski areas got things cleaned up and sortof opened for today. We got back up to home an hour before they close, so I jumped out of the car, grabbed a random pair of skis, did the crappiest summer-wax scraping job ever and headed over to TD. Turns out yellow summer wax isn't the greatest when its 4 degrees outside, plus I had grabbed my race poles with tiny baskets that didn't stick in unpacked powder. So I had no glide or no pole push. But both times up the powerlines I could just do classic because the kick wasn't too bad. Then I froze solid and retreated to the hot tub. Time for real waxing and stuff tomorrow.

race #2 in Golden Gate park. Back and forth with a few people, one from my mass start and another from the one in front that we caught.

orienteering race 19:00 [3] *** 3.36 km (5:40 / km) +49m 5:17 / km

race #3, other side of Golden Gate park. I ended up as the 6th guy in the second heat, which meant 1-5 were much faster than me, so I never saw them after about 4 and did most of it on my own. My back started to hurt a little bit after this one.
3 PM

run warm up/down 5:00 [2] 0.5 km (10:00 / km)

orienteering race 20:54 [3] *** 3.17 km (6:36 / km) +197m 5:02 / km
20c

race #4 at McLaren park, in the south end of SF. A little full of lunchtime pad thai, but I also didn't have too much energy left anyway. In a heat with some juniors and Carol, and me and the juniors took off and promptly bombed #4, and didn't see Carol again for a couple controls. Clean for the rest of it, just tired on the uphills.

hiking 1:30:00 [3] 5.0 mi (18:00 / mi)

Slickrock bushwhack in the east side of the park, which had lots of cool open slabs and a little ice. Tons of sheep tracks, but we never caught any.

Then the long drive home through the nothing of central Nevada. We drove up the Extraterrestrial Highway by Area 51, though the most exciting things we saw were some shotgunned signs and the black mailbox where aliens deliver their conspiracy theories.
