Long easy workout at TD. They changed around one of the trails on the far side of the valley, which is pretty sweet now, bonus climb. Got unpleasantly cold towards the end, both for my fingers and my skis. I think I need to practice eating and drinking more during long workouts, since I don't really do that except during races.

Quick skate around TD just before they closed. Snow was speedy fast and it felt really good.

Morning ski with Dad and Jonis around TD, up the hill and around crazy horse. Wax felt squeaky and slow at the beginning, but nice and fast on the downhills at the end.
3 PM

skate ski 1:23:16 [3] 18.78 km (4:26 / km) +229m 4:11 / km
shoes: 13 fischer rcr ski-o (109)

Back out in the afternoon for some speedy V2 around the valley with Dad. Trails were nice and solid and smooth.

skate ski 1:43:47 [3] 14.43 km (7:12 / km) +237m 6:39 / km
shoes: 13 fischer rcr ski-o (109)

We went up to Royal Gorge to play in the sun. They had quite a few trails groomed, but they were all super soft and pretty crappy for skating. It was sunny but chilly, had blue wax on all day and it never got slow.
2 PM

skate ski 1:00:04 [3] 10.44 km (5:45 / km) +197m 5:15 / km

With Mom and Dad and Carol down around the valley in TD. Pretty soft, and alternating between snowy and sunny and both. Randomly ran into Backup-Backup-Dan, aka Backup-Bgallup, aka Nate Ball, out skiing in the valley with the inlaws.

skate ski 28:00 [3] 4.0 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: 13 fischer rcr ski-o (109)

A quick bit up the hill with Dad at the end, which was pretty soft and uphill so I skated it.

Around TD with Mom and Dad and Carol. Already snowing quite a bit, but not too windy so it wasn't too bad. A few flurries tonight for another foot or two.

Sunshine! Took the snowmobile out for a play this morning, trying to 1. break in the engine and 2. maybe make some ski-o. Managed to get the whole driving-trailer-in-snow thing and unloading-from-trailer thing done without any problems, then took it 10 miles down a groomed trail. Decided I should turn around, and instead of 3-point turning on the trail, went for a U-turn in a field and promptly buried it in 4 feet of powder. 15 minutes of digging and stomping and rocking and making bad noises with the drive belts and I got back onto the trail and headed back. Skipped trying to make any ski-o after that, I suppose the snow needs a few days to settle.

Anyway then I headed over to TD for a quick ski. Everything is in great shape, if a little soft, and there were tons of people. Now down to Sac to fetch the parental units.

Driving home from Reno this morning was actually pretty easy, chains all the way from nevada, but the highway was mostly clear. Got almost up to Truckee and then broke one of the chains, but it wasn't an important part so I just tucked in the loose ends and kept going. Got home just as today's storm started to get bad, but Carol really wanted to get out for a ski, so we went over to TD for a quick plod through 6" of new snow and a blowing blizzard. It was super fun. Here's a pic.

Saturday Dec 22, 2012 #

Note

Sort of rest day. We got a ridiculous amount of snow, it's hard to say how much because of drifting and whatnot, but I shoveled a foot or two from the driveway three times, not counting whatever the plow guy did in the morning. Once the highway opened back up we got John dug out and back on his way to LA, then thought about skiing but it started dumping again. We had to drive Emily down to Reno for her Sunday morning flight, which took two hours or so of fun driving. Watched the hobbit and then Carol and I crashed in a casino for the night, and will try to get back up to home on Sunday.

Easy crust ski around TD before the snow set in. Except that it started just about the time we went out, so pretty windy and wet and cold the whole time.

Super windy and chilly, but clear and sunny. Went down to TD for an easy crust ski down the valley, and then a bonus lap cause it was kindof fun.

ahr:143 max:162 shoes: 10 atomic red cheetahs

A quick day of break in between storms, so I went up to ASC with the plan to just do a nice steady 20k. They had almost all the trails open, and it was sunny, and the trails were in perfect shape, and it was pretty awesome.

ahr:129 max:145 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Nice and sunny and a good day for a ski, except for 20 mins in when it started blizzarding again. Probably 2" of new fluff by the time I got back up out of the valley. Trails were packed and rolled and good for ski-o practice, lots of bumps and groves and ditches all over the place.

ahr:138 max:164 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Over to TD to see how the new snow was doing, to which the answer was concrete. They had been out with a snowmobile and a roller, but it barely needed it. A little soggy down in the valley where the streams weren't frozen yet, but hopefully that'll ice up soon.

skate ski 1:39:14 [3] 16.98 km (5:51 / km) +418m 5:12 / km

Up to Royal Gorge with Carol and Jonis. Pretty nice, they had a few trails open, some of which were in great shape and some of which had a few choice sections full of rocks and pine trees. Bought a season-discount-pass, which for $20/year brings the trail pass price down by $10/day, so I might get up there more than once or twice this year. Which would be cool since I do actually like their trails, as long as they get around to grooming them, which hopefully will happen more frequently now that JoJo is in charge and Sugar Bowl is paying for it.

ahr:146 max:163 shoes: 10 atomic red cheetahs

Hard ski with Jonis around ASC. Did roughly 3 x ~20 mins, each of which had a full bottom to top and a couple more wanders around the lower hills. Jonis was on his junk skis and I had my quasi-good ones, so we were about even. Nicely snowing the whole time, except at the end when it was snowing ridiculously hard.

ahr:137 max:157 shoes: 10 atomic red cheetahs

Had a waxing party in the garage, which barely made a dent in the pile of things-to-get-waxed before I got bored, then I went up to ASC to play in the new snow. Conditions were good, and they've got a few more trails open. Were I to want to whine about something, I might say it was a bit soft and the snow was slightly below a respectable temperature, as after all on principle I only stock mostly red wax, but that'd be nitpicking.

run through Prosser with Carol and Jonis and JP. A little muddy in the swampy bits, but everything else was frozen. Snow tomorrow!

ahr:131 max:157 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

ASC. Cold and windy, but I put on an extra shirt so I was ok most of the time. Felt tired, partly due to being tired and partly because of slow skis. Now that the snow has had a chance to dry out conditions are getting better, but its almost like real snow now so I probably need to break down and wax the pair I've been on for the last 250k...

ahr:144 max:163 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Chasing Jonis around ASC. Very good conditions (you know, by non-tahoe standards), and they groomed a bunch of new trails up along the top. Cold at the start since the sun wasn't around yet, and I never warmed up the whole time.

Run with Carol down the creek and back up to TD. Swampy in the bottom, and frozen snowy on the ridge up.

ahr:136 max:158 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Declared myself healthy (except the teeth thing) and went up to Auburn for a ski. A week of snow + rain + snow + rain makes for pretty solid base, there's still not much but at least its finally not fluff anymore. Had to stop halfway through to pull some guy out of a flood creek (which was also a trail). He had tried to step over it, but then the banks collapsed and he ended up in a pile of skis and poles bridged over the water. The water was only like two feet deep so he could have just rolled over and sat in the middle of it to get his skis off, but that would have been chilly. So I got his skis off and hauled him out by his belt.

dp ski 37:01 intensity: (2:24 @2) + (13:31 @3) + (21:06 @4) 8.85 km (4:11 / km) +126m 3:54 / km
ahr:147 max:160 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

And then a couple laps of dp, cause my arms haven't hurt in a month.

orienteering race 1:40:47 [3] *** 11.6 km (8:42 / km) +134m 8:13 / km

Ultralong champs. Or the first half of it anyway. I started with about a 20% expectation of doing all of it, and between the pouring rain and muddy hillsides (with flat trail shoes) and me feeling like crap from not doing anything for the last three weeks it didn't take much effort to bail when the course swung through the finish halfway through.

Relay Champs. Go CSU! 8-pt team with Izzy, PG, and Mikkel. Solid run, a little trickier than the night-o because the pits were buried in green this time, but only made one real mistake where I just missed a control and then found the next [close] one instead.
