run hills 49:33 intensity: (5 @1) + (8:30 @2) + (22:54 @3) + (18:00 @4) + (4 @5) 4.66 mi (10:38 / mi) +135m 9:45 / mi
ahr:141 max:169

Hill workout at Donner Lake with Daniela. Felt pretty strong and was running the first half a few seconds faster than normal, but then instatired and spent the last half not passing out.

9 AM

skate ski 46:29 intensity: (9:42 @1) + (23:24 @2) + (12:56 @3) + (27 @4) 8.29 km (5:36 / km) +149m 5:09 / km
ahr:122 max:148 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Morning ski at TD. Not really much to get excited about, though it was still more white than brown. In places.

skate ski intervals 1:13:11 intensity: (2:01 @1) + (9:14 @2) + (34:03 @3) + (27:53 @4) 18.81 km (3:54 / km) +317m 3:35 / km
ahr:135 max:161 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Long intervals with Jonis at ASC. Good grooming, definitely better than TD, but only 2k or so. Felt randomly tired for some of them, and quite good for some others. It better warm up and melt soon, I need a rest day.

skate ski 1:21:01 intensity: (13:52 @1) + (21:00 @2) + (28:05 @3) + (18:04 @4) 16.06 km (5:03 / km) +321m 4:35 / km
ahr:131 max:162 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Morning ski with Carol and Jon and Jonis and a significant percentage of Truckee. Quite nice, much better than mid afternoon.

3 PM

skate ski 33:36 intensity: (8:23 @1) + (13:30 @2) + (11:43 @3) 5.15 km (6:32 / km) +146m 5:43 / km
ahr:120 max:144 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

I waited until the afternoon because Jonis said he wanted to come ski, then he bailed and I went out anyway. But when its 3 o'clock and sunny and october the snow is very soft and very sticky, so it was pretty uninspiring out there. To be fair, the deck thermometer says 72 right now, so you'd think I could have figured that out. This morning was 15 though, so surely there's some time in between where its nice.

Then I pumped up the car's spare tire with the bike pump, which doesn't seal right and so took a long long time.

skate ski 36:12 intensity: (11:17 @1) + (9:55 @2) + (13:47 @3) + (1:13 @4) 7.02 km (5:10 / km) +126m 4:44 / km
ahr:125 max:153 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Jon came up last night, so we went out this morning for an early ski before he left for work (which today seems to involve bootpacking the tele gear up to the summit of Alpine, to measure... stream conditions... and stuff).
4 PM

dp ski 1:11:17 intensity: (2:32 @1) + (13:35 @2) + (50:23 @3) + (4:47 @4) 15.74 km (4:32 / km) +242m 4:12 / km
ahr:135 max:160 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Back out in the afternoon for a dp. They had set classic tracks, but they were really soft and had nothing for a pole track, so I mostly did this in the center of the skate lane. Sunny and warm and quite nice out.

4 PM

skate ski 53:02 [3] 10.68 km (4:58 / km) +217m 4:31 / km
shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Spent the morning down in reno getting a trailer hitch installed on the golf (ski-o training center step one: check), then home to watch it snow for a while. Finally decided it wasn't going to stop so I went out for a quickie ski before it got dark. They had groomed some new trails earlier today, and driven a couple with just the snowmobile (yeah dp), so lots to play on. It was somewhat miserable in the heavy storm, especially on the downhills, and the trails were softer than yesterday, but still good.

2 PM

skate ski 1:37:02 intensity: (5:03 @1) + (27:50 @2) + (1:02:03 @3) + (2:06 @4) 20.78 km (4:40 / km) +353m 4:18 / km
ahr:132 max:151 shoes: 11 fischer rcr skio (110)

Skiing! About the same again last night, so maybe 30" on the ground total so far. TD got a new ginzu groomer this year, which is basically a super nice snowmobile grooming attachment for low snow (yeah 30" is low), so they busted that out and groomed all over the front of the mountain. Snow was heavy so it packed well, I had no problem skating on it all, even though it was still drifting in places from the wind. Snow! Saw Anna heading out just as I finished, then came home and sent Carol out to play.

Also my waxing elbow is wicked out of shape. One coat on mine and only scraping Carol's and its pretty sore. Though it might have something to do with the many hours of shoveling the past two days, which seems to use the same tendons.

other 1:00:00 [1]

Woot snow! Between 1 - 3 feet so far depending on which side of the driveway you ask, though that's obviously mostly drifted. Not that that matters when I'm trying to shovel the car in off the road. Also the car is broken again. Grr.

run warm up/down 30:00 [1] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)

orienteering race 17:19 [3] *** 3.0 km (5:46 / km)

NA sprint. Pretty solid run, only a couple little mistakes, but good flow I was happy about. Except the part where I skipped 10... just got distracted going through brush out of 9 and when I started reading the map again I went to 11. quickroute.

Now to get home! maybe.

orienteering race 1:32:00 [3] *** 13.0 km (7:05 / km)
spiked:23/26c

NAOC long. Stopped short on #1 (oh, its 1:15). Then just fine until 17 (wtf why? 13-17 looks pretty on the map, but its all just thorns, when the rest of the map is so nice). Then thought I was at the other pond at 18. But still happy with the race. quickroute.
9 PM

run warm up/down 8 [3] 0.01 km (13:20 / km)

orienteering race 1:35 [5] ***** 0.1 km (15:50 / km)
spiked:11/12c

CSU cabin supersprint. Rocked it.

orienteering race 42:00 [3] *** 5.0 km (8:24 / km)
spiked:17/20c

NA Champs middle. Had a pretty solid race, first half was very good, I was all by myself and nailing just about everything. The plan was to go slow enough to make no mistakes, stop anytime I wasn't exactly sure where I was, and run fast all the other times. In general it worked pretty good. Caught up to John Goodwin halfway through and got distracted by him now and then for some little mistakes, but I think he was making me run faster so it might have ended up net equal for time. quickroute.

Cruise around the model event in PA. Sleepy from too much redeye + NYC traffic.

Note

Dear Carol, when the nice airplane pilot offers you the cool little pin with wings on it, even if its because he thinks you're 12, you just take it. They're rad pins.

Note

In order to achieve the mental zen preparation for naoc's, yesterday and today we've watched both Team America and the South Park Movie. I am ready.

Also since we're flying tomorrow we're not having a Truckee Wednesday night summer training event, ending our 16-week streak. By all accounts its been a great success, we sortof figured at the start it would be mostly Carol, Jonis and I, but by now we've got a regular crew of a dozen or so (not even counting our 5 M/F6s), of which we'll get 6-10 out on any given night. And I didn't even have to set them all. Also we said any money left over after the printing costs would go to the ski-o team, so that plus a few bonus donations means we get to send almost $600 to the team, which is pretty sweet as well.

ahr:128 max:160 shoes: Niflheim Ed McSpecials

DP intervals at Martis Dam. Adjusted the speed reducers down again so they're doing stuff again, which made it all slow.
6 PM

run hills 51:36 intensity: (1:23 @1) + (17:35 @2) + (15:40 @3) + (16:58 @4) 4.94 mi (10:27 / mi) +190m 9:20 / mi

Truckee running club hill workout. Felt surprisingly good for these.

mtn bike 59:55 [3] 10.04 mi (10.1 mph) +197m

Down into the valley checking out some of the new mtb trails. Good stuff. They're all definitely cut for bikes, not just hiking, as they're wide and smooth and the switchbacks are big enough to get around on the bike. They've also been in there with the masticator clearing huge swaths of forest to make more awesome terrain. There's now a whole section that connects the nice part on top with the nice part in the valley.

hiking 30:00 [1] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

We met up with Amy on Saturday night for camping dinner extravaganza, then today went for an easy strolly hike up to a random waterfall over near Hetch Hetchy.

Saturday Oct 13, 2012 #

hiking 2:00:00 [1] 7.0 mi (17:09 / mi)

Down in Yosemite for the weekend. An inch or two of snow at Tioga pass, but not much at all in Toulumne. Carol and I hiked up the JMT to Cathedral Lake, and then bushwhacked back down over the top of Medlicott Dome.

Hill intervals at Martis Dam. All good until about halfway through #4, then the wind went from totally calm to instant gusting headwind. Made things more difficult.

Night-O! Fun course at Tahoe Donner set by Anna. Little mistake at #7 where I wandered a bit on the compass, but ok otherwise. Ran right through about ten deer going to 5, could have touched a couple of them in the bushes. All those eyes!

Across TD and then down the wiggly trail to alder creek. Ran into Gary from the ski shop on his mtb commuting home, so I ordered another pair of V2 frames. Then up the side of the valley and back on a logging road. Now its time to cook some turkeys for fake thanksgiving.

Boggs Mt blue long. Ok-ish run, a bunch of trail legs I nailed, a few in the woods that didn't go as well, and then some stupid mistakes at the end after I was tired from running straight up 30 contours. Fortunately I figured out the swapped code numbers right away so I didnt lose any time there. And didn't get stung by any bees. qr.

Mr Dobbs is here to visit on his epic road trip, so we went down to Burton Creek after Carol got off work and ran an old green course. Took an awesomely bad parallel route to 5 and got lots of lost, finally bailed to the next one and then figured out what I had done when I ran through the circle after a few hundred meters. No big problems after that, though it was getting dark by the end so I had to stop to see the map.
