Training with Jonis on Donner Summit. Holy super sneaky awesomeness. How come I've never run here before? And how come we've never have races on it? (oh right, cause no one else lives here). Easily my new favorite Tahoe terrain. quickroute, starting south from the parking lot.

Waited up at most of the controls for Jonis, since there weren't streamers or anything and he was having trouble with it. But not for too long since the mosquitoes were ferocious. And, to my credit, none of the control locations I picked were still buried in snow.

My lime tree, which had a fairly rough winter, was for all intents and purposes completely dead looking by the end of the spring. The leaves that hadn't fallen off were brown and shriveled, and most of the branches were dried up too. I guess its not ideal growing conditions in the winter up here or something.

So I cut all the dead branches off so it would stop dropping crap on the floor, and all that was left was the trunk and a couple little stump branches. But I got too lazy to throw it out, stuck it in a corner and forgot about it, and then went on vacation for two months. I come back and the stupid thing is covered in new branches and green leaves. Without having been watered in well over two months.

Easy mtb around TD, checking out the summer's brush chopping. They've cleaned a huge swath of the front side of the mountain, and chipped it all nicely so the forest floor is soft and perfectly smooth. Should be skiable with about three inches of snow...

Also got three-way plane tickets for SML champs and Relay champs. I think that might actually be all the traveling I'm doing this fall. Probably not though.

Note

so if you count 365 days back from the end of woc, it looks like I have 2047 controls for the year. I wasn't really making a concerted effort to get a lot, just counting. 600 of those are ski-o (though not counting the figure-8 trainings, which would be another +1000 or so)

Home sweet home. I kindof missed it. Or at least its glorious lack of humidity and oxygen and heat. I figured the best way to get rid of this head cold that we all seemed to pick up at the end of france was to go out and run in the desert for a really long time. Especially since it was probably caused by dehydration anyway. Actually I needed to get a time check on my long courses, and today is the best day to do it since two months of traveling at sea level has me completely unacclimatized.

I also noticed today that I was doing a lot better at reading the vegetation here than I have in the past. Which seemed strange since I certainly haven't been running on any terrain/forest like this at all in the last two months. But maybe its from some other useful crossover skill coming through, like distance estimation or something.

Anyway, long course success. Its fun and long and the woods are awesome. Not the most technical stuff you ever did see, but its plenty fast and has its share of tricky bits. I made a few mistakes. And fell off a cliff. Just a little one though.

Last day of the French 6 days, middle distance on the middle final terrain. Easily the best terrain of the week: open runnable woods, but with lots of contour and rock detail to make it technical. Had a pretty good run, a couple bigger mistakes for a few minutes total, but overall solid. Finished 23rd, not as good as day 3 (17th) but enough to bring my overall ranking up to 41st (of 170) for the week, which I'm happy with given that I dnf'd on day one and still didn't feel so good on day two.

Then baked in the sun and watched the relays. The women's third leg was easily the best orienteering spectating I've ever seen, due to a combination of: video controls for the big screen (5? 6?), technical terrain that caused huge mistakes and lead swaps on just about every control, big screen gps tracking to show said mistakes, and of course, Angry Minna doing some serious run downs. The men's relay was boring by comparison.

Short middle distance day on the other end of the woc long map. Technical but super green and crappy, mostly logging slash everywhere. Had a pretty sloppy run, no real huge mistakes, just bobbles on almost every control. At least at 8am its not so hot out.

Long day. Lots of trail legs, a bonus run up to a big monument on the edge of the big cliff at the edge of the plateau, then a km or two of trail controls to get to the finish. Not the most exciting course, but a pretty sweet area. Made some good mistakes on the technical controls, mostly by getting to the circle fine and then going right past the control. Not paying attention enough, or not used to the mapping (this is one of the ones where they randomly deleted every third cliff). Late start and super hot outside.

French 5-days #1
Not the bestest day ever. Had a few intestinal difficulties last night, so I hadn't eaten or drank anything for a day or so, which doesn't help so much for the running. Stumbled around the first half of the course, made some awesome mistakes, then went from 11-18 to cut off the spectator loop and bailed. quickroute.

Run with Boris and Patrick along the ridgeline above the lake in Aix, which had a cool knobby tooth on it that we ran/hiked up first, then went out on along the ridgeline and back on a pretty good fireroad. I bonked pretty hard right about at the turnaround, I don't think I rehydrated at all after yesterday. Too busy getting angry at french people. We're in hotel #2 now though, so things are much improved.

SOW day 5
Up above treeline again, on some super fun grassy rocky detailed stuff. Basically the lower terrain of the map from day 3. Boris started two minutes behind me, caught me early on, then we ran most of it together, helping each other in a few places and hurting each other in a few others. Probably the most fun day yet, between both the terrain and chasing boris.

quickroute. Twisted my ankle something fierce on the way down to 12 (thats the red blob on the route), limped it out for the rest of the leg, then it just mildly hurt for the rest of the run. Totally blew it on 14, read some big cliffs as the gray stuff above the control, then dropped way too far without thinking.

High open field bits, then some super steep ski trail bits, then some detailed rocky bits. Made two big three minute mistakes, plus some hesitations, but felt pretty confident otherwise. But still finished far down the list. Maybe starting super early made it tougher. Or the pea soup fog on the top. quickroute. Also added the maps for the other days.
