Chilly last night, it was -2 when I got up this morning. Well the first time anyway, -2 is reason enough to go back to bed. Also there are a disturbing number of icicles growing on the inside of my sliding deck door. Clear and sunny though, so by the time Jonathan and I got out at 11 it was up to 15 or so, and the snow was only a little bit squeaky.

Early ski with Mom and Dad. Pretty chilly, about 10, but not too windy so it wasn't so bad except for the first part up on the mountain. Towards the end it started to warm up a little so the temperature was nice and the snow got better.

Then a lovely six hour rt drive in random heavy traffic to SMF and back, staring at the sun all the way down and headlights all the way back. My ears never popped the entire time I was down there, so I ended up with a huge headache by the time I got home.

We got two feet of flurries last night, and everybody was still grooming this morning, so we went out on the classics, mostly at mom speed. Classic would be a whole lot more fun if it was easier. Also if the weather didn't suck every time I did it. Though I suppose the only time I classic is when the weather is too crappy to skate, so thats probably the cause of both. Today it was switching between heavy blowing snow and relatively nice almost clearness, though trending heavily towards the snowy part.

Dad and I went out after lunch for a skate, partly up the mountain and then a bit down in the valley, with more snow flying everywhere. It wasn't really accumulating, so the trails were still ok, it was just blowing and cold.

dp of death loop, all by my lonesome self. Mom was tired after yesterday, and Dad had to go into town to see the eye doctor (or not see him, at least not clearly). Felt pretty good on the way up the mountain, even poled up the one super steep section that I've always had to skate so far. But the new snow made the tracks slow, so I started to wear out by the end of the loop around the valley.

Dad had the car, so I skied home, which unfortunately involves going up and over part of the mountain from the ski center. Whats that? How can I ski home unless they groom trails right to my front door? Oh thats right.

It was a nice sunny day after snow the last few, so we went up to Royal Gorge, having forgotten the rule that Royal Gorge is only actually skiable no earlier than three days and no later than six days after the last snowfall. The trails are so great, but the grooming is always such crap. They'd hit about 30k of trails once with the groomer, so it was at least flat and packed, but still pretty soft. Mom rented skate skis, so her and Dad and I cruised around from the main lodge down around the lake and back, not doing too bad considering how little she skates.

Drove over to the Van Norden end of RG in the afternoon, which is all flat around the lake to give mom an easier time skating. I did some extra laps around, but not really too fast as the trails here were even softer than the morning.

Went down to Tahoe City to see if it was less snowy and windy, which it was, somewhat. Easy tour around with mom and dad, mostly at mom speed, though I did some doggie circles when I started to get cold. Headache was a little better today, though I've acquired a sweet hacking cough.

Easy ski around the valley at TD with Dad. Felt pretty terrible today, I think the combination of jetlag, altitude, and sitting wedged on the plane have finally conspired to make me unhappy. Couldn't sleep past 4 this morning, and I've had a pounding headache all day. Stupid altitude, why can't the rest of the world be as high as home.

Note

yay bonus 23 hours in CDG...

So this morning I somehow suckered Alex into getting up at 4:30am and driving me 30 minutes each way to Arlanda, and I got there two hours before my flight left. I managed to occupy that time by spending 1.5 hours in line to check the skis, 15 minutes trying (and failing) to pay somebody for said checked skis, 20 minutes getting through security, and 5 minutes running to the gate, which was fortunately late. But then we left and sat on the runway for a while, so we showed up in Paris an hour late, which isn't good when your connection is an hour and ten minutes and in a completely different terminal. So I hauled ass out through customs, across the airport, back through customs, and back through security (all of which was expedited by a bit of boarding pass waving and some line cutting), and got to the gate only five minutes late. The plane was still there, but the gate was closed and they wouldn't let me on. And since all the snow Europe in the last couple days messed everybody else up, all the flights to NA were booked solid today, so the first flight out was the same one 24 hours later. But they gave me a free hotel and three meals, which was cool of them I suppose.

Last organized training was a sprint race through one of the marsh mazes. It was supposed to be yesterday instead of the line-o, but the Norwegians wanted to do it hard so we swapped it to today. It was pretty cold this morning (-12 at the car), so we rewaxed, then headed out to the remote start. They regroomed it all yesterday, so the tracks were pretty solid, but a crust over lots of new fluff.

So the first control went ok, then while going up a little hill I poled right on top of my ski, which basically pushed it straight back and kicked my legs out from under me. Instant face plant. Fortunately I managed to get up before anyone else came by and saw that. I blew the route choice going to #2, I was trying to just go roughly straight through the maze until I came out to the big trail, but got roughly straight to the side. So I cut back in at the other side in the wrong spot and had some bonus bumps to go over to get to the control. Then all good until #6, which I got to and discovered I had no map anymore. I guess it came out while I was dodging through some of the pine branches that overhang the trail, so I backtracked for a minute until I found it lying on the middle of the trail about to be run over by Alex. Then it was all good through the last control, which was a dogleg, so going to the finish I saw Ali and was trying to stay ahead of her. But its not a proper ski-o adventure unless I destroy something expensive, so one of the poles went through the crust, caught on a branch, and broke the bottom two feet off. I single sticked the last couple hundred meters to the finish, which fortunately was fairly flat, though I did get passed by Ali on the one small bump.

Got the backup poles, and headed out again for another shot at the sprint. The backup poles are a lot weaker than the real ones were, so I can't dp anywhere near as hard since they flex so much, so I was taking it easy. But very smooth on the navigation until 8 where I miscounted a turn and did a bonus loop in the wrong direction.

Did the first four controls again, but this time with the camera stuck onto the front of the map holder harness, to see if I could get some sexy first person ski-o video. It sortof worked, though a little nauseous because of the constant double pole up and down of the chest.

Training day! A bunch of Norwegians stuck around, and two swiss guys, and then the three of us. Another foot or so of snow overnight, and most of the trails had been hit once with a snowmobile, but there was still a lot of fluff everywhere.

Morning session was a corridor map, with most legs having very restricted route choice, so often there was only one connecting trail visible for parts of the leg, which made it a bit like a line-o. My goal for this one was to not stop moving ever, especially at controls and tight turns and junctions, so I'd practice reading the map while skiing, even I had to slow down a bunch. It worked ok for the most part, though sometimes I had to slow down quite a bit.

ski-o! 1:16:11 [3] *** 8.69 km (8:46 / km) +39m 8:34 / km

Afternoon session was a line-o, which snaked all through the trails around the map. We had been talking to the groomer guys at lunch, who are also good skiers, about skiing technique and training and whatnot. So for this one I was trying some of the poling and skating techniques they'd mentioned. Most took a lot of strength (or really a normal amount, the arms are just tired), so I did the line-o as intervals, going about 5 minutes on, 30-60 seconds off (but not reading the map, just resting). This was enough to let me go hard for the 5 minutes, plus I was mostly leap-frogging Alex so I got to throw some elbows on the way by each time.

WRE Middle. Not the best. I was skiing like a muppet out there (yay boggle words). Probably too tired after all the races in the last three days. A lot of today was narrow stuff in some marshes, which was bumpy and full of little saplings (in the trail), and I didn't have the arm strength to get around a lot of the corners on the uneven stuff. It takes some poling and balance to keep the tips out of the fluff and around the saplings without loosing speed, and I wasn't doing that so well today, so I'd have to get the speed back up after every 90 degree corner. Also since there were some long flats, you were poling for very long stretches without any rest on the downhills.

Not gps yet, as the downloadity-bits for the fake-gps seem to be being cranky and I'm too tired and hungry to figure out whats wrong.

For some reason the heavy snow during the race that got even heavier after the race didn't really discourage the gigglies from wanting to go back out afterwards for some training. I was freezing and my hands were white, so I left wearing the pile jacket and shell over all the warmups, and even at that it took half an hour to get warm, and an hour to get too hot.

Anyway we played the follow the leader relocation game through some of the narrow mazes on the map. Not too bad, though there was a couple inches of fluff on all the trails from today, and even more on yesterday's trails. I didn't bring the map holder, so when it was my turn I'd look on one of the others and then just wander. Still good practice, until we all got extra tired and hungry and bailed.

Morning mass start middle. A 20km middle! Pretty crazy at the start, but the guys had four maps so it forked pretty quick. I made a mistake early in the first loop, so I dropped the pack right away, then was mostly on my own through the first and second maps. A few people around for some of the third loop, though I think they were probably the fast guys on their fourth map. Last map was really short, but I think I messed something up there, though I forget at the moment. They're still holding the maps (even though they're up on the online gps), and with five different maps today they all kindof blur together...

So the good news for today is that I still felt strong skiing though all 20k, whereas previous winters I'd definitely have been dead on the narrow uphill trails by the end of all this. Yay for ski training. The bad news is I made a bunch of sloppy mistakes, mostly focus issues, because I was trying really hard to ski fast when I got out on the big trails, so I wasn't reading ahead well enough to the narrow stuff going into the controls. So I'd miscount some of the turns I was planning and turn one early or something. Most weren't too bad to recover, you just ski through and loop around, but still looses a few meters here and there and causes some hesitation.

Also touch-free emit rules for ski-o.

WRE sprint. Starting every 30 seconds, with one each of men and women and junior men and junior women each interval, and lots of dogleg controls on narrow trails. So lots of packs, and lots of chaos getting into controls and u-turning and getting back out, all on meter wide trails. Lots of distractions, and I made a bunch of stupid route choice decisions, so I wasn't too happy with this one. More info once I get the map back and the gps.

I've might have the gps track on the ghetto-gps, but I'm not sure it turned on ok and I didn't want to worry about it at the time, and I left its download cable in the other room so I can't check now.

Night Sprint Relay. Awesome. Two people (me + Nick the brit), and four legs, so you get to go out twice and sit around getting cold once. I had a pretty good first leg, a couple little mistakes where I took the wrong fork, but those didn't matter much, just a few extra meters, never enough to turn around and double back. One route choice that I regretted at the time, because I went straight up and over a big hill on some skinny trail instead of down and around it, but now I'm thinking the down and around might have been a lot further, so it might have been an ok choice. But they still have all the maps so I can't check.

Waited around for Nick's second leg, doing some laps around the stadium now and then to not get too cold. He hasn't done too much skiing before, and this was only his fifth ski-o or so, so some trouble with getting going, but not too bad. My second leg went really good, I was on my own for the first half, and then caught up to a couple other people towards the end. But all the route choices were solid, though I was a little more tired than the first time.

So the night-o part didn't make too much of a difference I thought, besides just making it feel crazy and awesome. Ski-o is fairly tunnel-vision anyway, and the headlamps are bright enough that you can see snow no problem. Probably the biggest difficulty was the exchanges, all you see coming in was a headlamp and a silhouette, so you have to guess at your teammates' skating style. To be fair, the announcer was yelling out all the pre-warning numbers, which helped if you knew swedish. Though for our second exchange they actually said it in english, so I guess they took a little pity on us.

I felt really good skiing, even on the narrow stuff. Small trails are pretty soft, I pole through in a lot of places, especially on the hills, but its solid enough I can keep moving. Definitely feeling much better than previous years on the narrow stuff, so thats encouraging. Granted this place is fairly flat, but I'll take whatever good news I can get.

Out to the local trails for an easy ski around the lighted trails before dinner. Apparently "snow conditions are really warm" was not said in the context of tahoe-warm. But it was fun even with really slow skis. No hr, as I think I might have just donated the hr strap to the top of a set of cabinets.

dp of death day. trails were wet and slow, with a pleasant sort of wintry-mix falling from the sky, though at least during the worst of it I was high up on the mountain so it was all snow. one trail down in the valley they hadn't groomed in a couple days, the tracks weren't quite filled in but it was a bit more work than the rest of it. it just helped to emphasize the od part of the dpod.

So I go down to the grocery store yesterday, and while I'm browsing through the skis I find a pair of Fischer RCRs that were flexed at 110kg, which is basically unheard of. I've been looking for a pair of cheaper ski-o skis so I could stop breaking the expensive marathon skis, and these are all good. Don't know about this color though.

Anyway waxed them up a few times and took them out for a spin though a solid rainstorm, which turns out isn't so fun. They felt slow and heavy but that could be because they're brand new or because there was a couple inches of fresh slush on the trails. Also I just threw some old bindings on them, and turns out one of them had a loose toe pin, which was fairly annoying.

Hill intervals. These suck up here. Just to make sure I don't crap out going down the back side of hills, I timed it up the hill, across the flat at the top, and down a bit on the other side, which was undoubtedly the worst part. You either want to just stop and glide, pass out, or puke. Though usually several of those. I had no idea what to expect, so I just went flat out for the first couple, then decided I'd do 10 or until the times went over 2:00. Almost missed it on #6, but then trash talked myself back towards 1:50 for the rest of them.

Conditions were pretty perfect this morning, we only got six inches yesterday, but it was from 1.5" of water (as opposed to the big storm two weeks ago, which was closer to 20:1), so it was heavy and packed down right away then froze up solid last night. But it was sunny and warm, and I figured it would get slow soon, so I bumped up this afternoon's long skate to right afterwards. It was good until about the last 45 minutes, then I was getting pretty tired and the sunny spots were getting pretty slow. Food or water probably would have been nice somewhere too. Also first 50k day of the year. woot woot. Even if it was pretty relaxed (after the hills anyway).

easy skate with Jonis and Jonathan. happily warm and sunny, though our snow is rapidly compacting. but at least the trails are getting more solid.

Skate hills with Jonis. Or maybe hill to be exact. He was all tired and out of shape, so I took the opportunity to beat him into the ground. Then some no pole around the valley and back up. Trails were borderline horrendous, some heavy wet new snow last night and this morning that didn't groom up so well. The only redeeming part is that Jonis's new exclamation for crappy grooming is "its like vermont" (aka last years middle champs).

Up at Auburn, doing the course from last year minus the stupid parts and the lower trail which hasn't been groomed yet. Lots of hesitation or places where I was reading the map instead of skiing as fast as I could, but only one big error where one of the lines went through another control, so I went to that one first, which wasn't the best route and added some bonus climb.

In proper Donner Pass fashion, as soon as I put the map holder on it started snowing really hard, but that died out halfway through and only left an inch or so on the trails. Its just barely cold enough for snow at home, down in town its actually raining. What is this crap? Good thing we have 10 feet of base.

It finally decided to warm up a little, I don't know how the rest of you can stand to ski in not-t-shirt weather. Still felt pretty trashed from yesterday, so I was planning on a nice easy skate, but the warm snow and not-warm wax weren't playing too well together, so it was frustratingly slow and more work than intended.
