at Blueberry Hill XC with dad. still pretty cold, <10 when we got there, not too windy though. trails were ok, some were pretty soft and others had lots of dirt in them.

another loop after lunch. warmer by now, about 15, and we found a trail that was wider and groomed pretty good.

chasing dad around the trails

Friday Dec 25, 2009 #

skate ski 1:01:00 [3] 10.2 km (5:59 / km)

around the front yard. some with no poles, some with samantha, and then exploring up the hill with dad.

ski-o! 28:58 [5] 5.44 km (5:19 / km)

three random ski-o courses around the house:
1.5k - 7:51
1.3k - 6:20
2.6k - 14:40
first two were fun and fast, the third went up and down the hill of death, and so was less fast, but still fun.

skate ski 41:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:06 / km)

chasing dad around in the dark

Thursday Dec 24, 2009 #

skate ski 1:22:00 [3] 16.0 km (5:08 / km)

in VT. laps around the front yard with daddyo and kenny. good snow, but no bombi, so a little soft for the poles.

Wednesday Dec 23, 2009 #

Note

Rest day. Hanging out on the airplanes.

Tuesday Dec 22, 2009 #

classic ski 1:26:00 [3] 21.0 km (4:06 / km)

some new snow overnight, but the kick wax was working good (I had on lots of it), so this was actually almost fun.

skate ski 1:31:00 [3] 25.2 km (3:37 / km)

switched over to the new skate skis, and went out to play on the new snow. not enough to make it tough, just enough to fill in the icy cracks from last week and make everything smooth. wax was ok, but I was pretty tired, so not going too fast. it clouded over and got windy about halfway through, so I was freezing by the end.

Monday Dec 21, 2009 #

skate ski 1:06:00 [3] 15.0 km (4:24 / km)

A couple inches of new snow, so not too fast. But after the last few days of ice, at least it was smooth.

Also have two families from work up for xmas while I'm gone, so the house is now full of screaming [but awesome] swedish kids.

Sunday Dec 20, 2009 #

skate ski 1:00:00 [3] 20.2 km (2:58 / km)

loop through the valley late in the day. it was all super slick ice with plenty of skate grooves in it, so things were pretty interesting the whole time. almost bit it good a couple times on some corners.

dp ski 15:00 [3] 5.0 km (3:00 / km)

got in the tracks and double poled on some of the longer upwind legs, as it seemed to offer less surface area than trying to skate.

Saturday Dec 19, 2009 #

skate ski 1:40:00 [3] 31.0 km (3:14 / km)

early morning while everything was still nice and solid. same loop as yesterday, plus up and back on crabtree canyon, which is a wicked long climb up out of the valley. coming down was sweet though.

Friday Dec 18, 2009 #

skate ski 1:16:00 [3] 25.2 km (3:01 / km)

long loop down through the valley, late in the day so everything had started to ice up and get fast. it got really warm up here yesterday before they groomed it, so all the trails were frozen and rock solid today. had the rock skis since everything was covered in pine needles on wednesday, but it all seemed to magically disappear by today, even without any new snow.

ski-o! 29:00 [5] *** 8.0 km (3:38 / km)
spiked:8/8c

Let the fun begin. Went down at Tahoe XC for the day, and started off by skiing a course I scribbled on the map pretty much at random. Turned out to actually have some pretty good route choices. Stayed around the main area on the east half of the map, so it was flatish and fast. Its easy to spike controls when there's nothing there.

skate ski 2:00:00 [1] *** 10.0 km (12:00 / km)

Spent a while roaming around the map checking out the vegetation and areas where it would be good to add little trails. Also remapping lots of the big trails, as there are lots of bends and corners that are just wrong, but I don't think I even made a dent in them. I think that needs a more serious effort to it, maybe with the gps. Most of this was no-poles, since I had a pen in one hand. Flailed around through the woods a bit testing out some trail locations, which wasn't too bad since the snow has packed down somewhat. And I think I've got lots of good trails planned =)

skate ski 1:14:00 [3] 17.0 km (4:21 / km)

then a fast right-turn loop around the whole place. lots of hills on the far end!

Wednesday Dec 16, 2009 #

other 1:00:00 [3]

moving, throwing, and stacking a dumptruck worth of firewood. it all came split though, so no fun there.

skate ski 1:21:00 [3] 18.5 km (4:23 / km)

mid afternoon, and the snow was warm and wet, and I had the wrong wax on, so not moving too fast.

Tuesday Dec 15, 2009 #

skate ski 1:04:00 [3] 17.5 km (3:39 / km)

hill day. did a right-turn loop around all the trails up and around the main part of the mountain (but not down to the valley). pretty good except for the part up on windy ridge, which was obediently windy and had frequent drifts a foot or so deep. those were fun on the way down.

Monday Dec 14, 2009 #

skate ski 1:33:00 [3] 30.5 km (3:03 / km)

New skis! Wandered into Sierra Nordic today and found a new pair of Madshuseses that are actually almost heavy enough for me. They feel a little squirrelly in some places, not sure if thats because they only have one grove in the bottom instead of two like the Rossi's, or if its because they're missing the other 999 rock-related gouges in the bottom. Sweet sunset down in the valley, and once it got back below freezing the wax was perfect and things just got fun.

Sunday Dec 13, 2009 #

classic ski 56:00 [3] 9.0 km (6:13 / km)

real classic skiing this time (not just double pole), with the sticky wax and the complaining and all that. I suppose since I live so close now I at least have to learn how to classic. not that I'm not gonna hate it. or give it a stupid color in the log. I guess I should probably invent a new type for dp too, since they seem different.

skate ski 1:08:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:51 / km)

skate loop afterwards. they'd been grooming constantly all day, but only the main highway trails were sortof packed, everything else was uber fluffy. at least it all came down wet, so it started a little solid and should freeze up good once it gets colder.

Saturday Dec 12, 2009 #

Note

Rest day. Too much snow.

Friday Dec 11, 2009 #

dp ski 1:03:00 [3] 12.0 km (5:15 / km)

wait did somebody say we had enough snow? whatevs, cause we're getting more. Its warm this time (30), so its all coming down as concrete. They groomed a little, but even that hadn't set up yet so you just punched through to the previous fluffy stuff. Three laps of double pole around the flat loop between the lodge and the power lines. Storm #1 is just about done, with 2 and 3 coming tonight and tomorrow night. According to the weather guy, #2 is "only going to be six inches, so its not worth talking about". But #3 should be good for some more feets.

Note

also this is awesome.

Thursday Dec 10, 2009 #

skate ski 2:03:00 [3] 34.0 km (3:37 / km)

two easy loops around the valley. downright warm today, it was 0+ when I got up. Snow was still squeaky in a few places, but in most I actually had glide, which was cool. I cut the sleeves off an old ratty bike jersey and used those as wrist warmers, I think it'll work pretty good. plus they're awesomely obnoxious neon green.

Wednesday Dec 9, 2009 #

skate ski 53:00 [3] 14.0 km (3:47 / km)

Went out late in the afternoon hoping to get the max warmness for the day, but I think I was too late as the shady parts of the trails were already squeaky cold again. Both hands got deathly cold again, I think I need to make some wrist warmers or something to close the gap between my sleeves and the gloves. Stupid short armed jackets. Also it just needs to warm up. They don't sell green wax in california.

Tuesday Dec 8, 2009 #

skate ski 1:47:00 [3] 20.0 km (5:21 / km)

Skate at TD. The storm blew through last night and then the temperature just dropped, it was -10 this morning. They had about half the trails groomed, and most of the rest just packed with the treads. Everything was super fluffy, so I was sinking in to the ankles in a lot of places. Did a loop through Euer Valley then back up over the front of the mt, but it was windy up there (and only up to about 10 degrees), so I froze pretty instantly. Still good to play on some clean snow, although its not like there's anything left of my ski bottoms after the last couple weeks.

Monday Dec 7, 2009 #

Note

I like snow. Which is good because wow do we have a metric crapton of it.

orienteering 36:49 [5] **** 3.6 km (10:14 / km) +190m 8:05 / km
spiked:17/18c

Blue middle at Vasquez. I love this place. Had an awesome run, mostly nailed everything except one control (#9), which I blew 2+ minutes on. Didn't see a fork in the trail on either the map or in the terrain, so I ended up searching too high in an area that perfectly paralleled the area below. Finished 2nd three minutes behind James, and a couple minutes in front of Joe.

Ran into a nice blizzard on the way back up to home. Chains on for the last 80 miles, which took forever. The road wasn't too bad since it was cold and all fluff, but it was blowing everywhere so visibility was zero. Had to actually just stop in the road a few times when I couldn't even see the ground right in front of me, let alone which direction the road was going. Not so good with the dropoffs on either side. We've got about 8" at home so far, and apparently the storm hasn't even gotten here yet.

orienteering 1:00:00 [1] *****
spiked:11/14c

trail-o champs at Vasquez. so I think I did pretty good considering this was my first trail-o ever. missed 3, but rocked the timed ones, so I ended up at the top of the 3s. joe b nailed them all, then there were a quite a bunch of 2s.

orienteering 19:41 [5] *** 3.0 km (6:34 / km)
spiked:13/15c

afternoon sprint. felt good running, though the air is a little thick down here. not too many problems navigating, but it helps to have run (and set courses) here a lot. doubled back near 5 after getting distracted by a random comtrol, then did 8 before 7 (they were close). might have lost 15s on the first, and 40 on the second. ended up 3rd behind joe b and james s, both around 18:50.

Friday Dec 4, 2009 #

Note

down to LA for the weekend

Wednesday Dec 2, 2009 #

run 53:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:50 / mi)

loop around Northwoods. mostly on the road (icy), except for about a mile by the golf course which was on a trail (very icy).

Tuesday Dec 1, 2009 #

dp ski 1:21:00 [3] 16.0 km (5:04 / km)

out in the morning. same dp loop as yesterday, only colder and with way more coyote klister. they must have been having a party on the trails last night.
