skate ski 1:00:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:17 / km)

skiing around VT. lots of new snow last night, wet and warm.

ski-o! 16:00 [3] 3.0 km (5:20 / km)

daddy-o's ski-o around the trails at home. two laps on the same course: 7:58 and 8:01

hiking 1:00:00 [1]

snowshoeing around the pines setting dodgy single track trails for ski-o.

Sunday Dec 30, 2007 #

ski-o! 1:33:00 [3] 15.0 km (6:12 / km)

Ski-O score-o at Garnet Hill. Somewhat dodgy grooming, but at least there was snow there this year. Got all but one 1-pt control, but was a few minutes (3 or 4, depending on who's counting) late so I blew most of my points with penalties. Still a fun course.

skate ski 1:15:00 [3] 10.0 km (7:30 / km)

Short warmup beforehand + ski to go get the car + ski around with Dad in the afternoon. Lots of clueless kids to run over.

Also decided that the replacement pole I've got, the old swix CT-2 (the other one of a pair I broke a couple years ago), is much different from the CT-2s I broke on Saturday. The old one flexes about twice as much, so I either wore it out or they've just figured out how to make them stiffer since them. They are different colors, so maybe thats it...

Saturday Dec 29, 2007 #

skate ski 1:33:00 [3] 18.0 km (5:10 / km)

Back at the Balsams, lots of fresh snow, and we spent most of the morning following the groomer around on the newly groomed soft stuff, as he was doing laps and grooming all the trails 4 or 5 times...

skate ski 1:25:00 [3] 17.5 km (4:51 / km)

The groomer finally stopped in the afternoon, so it started to harden up a little. Towards the end we got attacked by a pack of ferocious grizzly bears and, in the process of fighting them off with nothing more than ski poles and granola bars, I broke one of my poles when they bit through it. Or I was skiing on a flat trail and fell over. Honestly I forget which.

Friday Dec 28, 2007 #

skate ski 1:01:00 [3] 13.7 km (4:27 / km)

At Rangeley in Maine. A bunch of new snow, so everything was pretty soft as it had just been groomed in the morning.

skate ski 2:00:00 [3] 24.5 km (4:54 / km)

Things had hardened up by the afternoon, so Dad and I did a long skate lap around the place. Maybe twice.

Thursday Dec 27, 2007 #

skate ski 1:43:00 [3] 21.8 km (4:43 / km)

Skate skis, but this was probably about half double pole in the tracks.

skate ski 1:13:00 [3] 14.1 km (5:11 / km)

don't really remember this one. it must have been good.

Wednesday Dec 26, 2007 #

skate ski 1:15:00 [3] 11.1 km (6:45 / km)

At the Balsams in NH with mom and dad. Some dodgy grooming today, but its still snow.

Tuesday Dec 25, 2007 #

skate ski 1:01:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:21 / km)

Some morning cruising around the nice frozen trails, plus a run up the hill along dad's fireroad of death. Not so bad going up...

skate ski 1:06:00 [3] 16.0 km (4:08 / km)

Warm afternoon, with lots of sun to soften up the ice chunks from the morning. We skied them down flat, and by the end it had gotten cold again, so I did a few speed laps around the fields (3:28)

Monday Dec 24, 2007 #

skate ski 40:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:00 / km)

It stopped raining overnight and iced up pretty nicely. After a few trips around with the groomer (dad driving and me surfing on the drag as ballast), we got some good speedy laps in.

The hand is pretty much back to normal today. It doesn't really hurt at all anymore, and I can see my knuckles again. Close enough to call it fixed.

skate ski 1:32:00 [3] 24.0 km (3:50 / km)

started with the map holder and another tiny-font page from Time, finished that up and switched with dad for a map, but it was getting dark by then. So did a few more just skiing.

Sunday Dec 23, 2007 #

skate ski 1:02:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:12 / km)

Around Dad's fields in the dark, in the rain. A little slow as everything was soaked through, but still not too bad.

Saturday Dec 22, 2007 #

skate ski 1:53:00 [3] 24.0 km (4:43 / km)

snow skiing? I guess it has potential, at least its something to hold me over until I can get back to the rollerskis...

Doing laps around daddy-o's trails. Nicely groomed with lots of snow! Did some easy laps, and some no-pole laps, and some speedy laps chasing dad (he won those today), and then did the last couple km with the map holder reading movie reviews from Time. It was sortof getting dark by then, but I still managed to get through a page and a half.

My right hand swelled up to the size of a grapefruit last night on the plane, but it doesn't really hurt too much, so I just crammed it inside a glove and ignored it. Can't pole too hard with that side (elbow hurts), but overall I'm not too bad off considering how it felt yesterday.

roller ski 20:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: v2s #1

The storm finally blew its way through last night, but that meant it was wicked windy all night so the trees dropped lots of crap on the road. I was only about 500 meters into the first lap when I stumbled on something and ran the front wheel of the ski square into the pole (which I had already planted and weighted) and broke the tip off. That went sailing off into the darkness and is probably stuck through the roof of somebody's lexus. Finished that lap on one pole, then got back to the car where I had an extra rubber tip. Not as good as a metal tip, but better than a carbon stump. So I got about halfway into the second lap when I hit something else with both skis at the same time and went ass over teakettle into the road. Landed pretty hard on my right side, bent all the fingers and the elbow back (somehow the wrist escaped unscathed), and took most of the skin back off the knee. Decided to cut my losses and call it a day.

run 20:00 [2]

easy jog to try to shake out that you-just-hurt-yourself-adrenaline feeling from my stomach. helped a little I guess

rollerblade 1:10:00 [3] 21.0 km (3:20 / km)

its been raining for a couple days, and I've been sick, and I've been working alot at work, so I took a few days off. it sort of dried out last night, so today felt pretty good.

orienteering 20:00 [2]

did Clare's line-o while waiting for the ginourmous line at registration to go away.

orienteering 1:09:00 [3]

Red course at Vasquez. Good course, one control in the wrong spot, but other than that it was fun. Good route choice on the legs, not just hide-and-seek with the controls.

roller ski 1:28:00 [3] 22.5 km (3:55 / km)

hiking 2:00:00 [3] 10.0 mi (12:00 / mi) +1200m 8:44 / mi

From the valley, hiked the four mile trail up to Glacier Point and back. Warmer (30s) and less windy than Sat, so a pretty nice day. Yosemite Falls froze overnight, so it spent most of the afternoon thawing and loudly bombing gigantic ice sheets down into the valley.

hiking 2:00:00 [3] 16.0 mi (7:30 / mi) +1300m 5:59 / mi

In Yosemite with ATY. From the valley, we hiked up over the rim (3000 ft of switchbacks) on the snow creek trail, then up towards tenaya lake before cutting up to the summit of Mt Watkins. Good views down into the valley, I'd never been up this way before. 20s and windy all day, with flurries for most of the afternoon.
