rollerblade 1:47:00 [2] 32.0 km (3:21 / km)

windy this morning, with a bit of a misty drizzle. very nice and cool, and the "bad" weather scared off all the people, so the path was empty.

Note

Yesterday was road bike day, and so today was broken-axle mountain bike day. The plan was to fix the back wheel and clean the gunk off everything else. Man, Eddie, if you guys thought the road bike was bad before raam, this one sits inside the parking garage at work and collects smog all day long. Check this out - the gunk actually sticks up higher than the teeth on the wheel. (for the bicycle challenged, its supposed to look like this)

Performance had nothing for the busted axle, so I hit another bike shop and found a complete non-quick-release bolt-on back wheel for $30. Mounted everything and got it back on before it occurred to me that I should check if the old freewheel was ok or if that had been busted too. And yep, I'd managed to bend that too. Its a little hard to see with my wobbly camera hand (I was covered in grease), but the freewheel itself is rotating off axis. So tomorrow I gotta find another one of those...

roller ski 1:29:00 [4] 25.1 km (3:33 / km)
shoes: v2s #1

hills: 6:47, 5:27, 5:46 (L), 5:04 (L), 4:58, 5:47, 5:43 (L), 5:41 (L)
finally got one under 5, and even came pretty close with the left handed one before it.

road bike 31:15 [3] 9.2 mi (17.7 mph)

Got the bike delivered from the east coast, and spent most of today putting it back together. Had a few pieces left over, but I taped them onto the seatpost and it was ready to go. Hit up Performance for some tools and toys, as they were having several sales stacked on top of each other, so it basically worked out that everything was at 60% off. Picked up a workstand, which makes things much easier to play with.

As for the actual ride: just a quick loop since it was getting dark. Went down to the beach and back to see if all the parts were adjusted right. Not sure if it was the short ride, or if I just have a lot of pent up spin in me, but the 2 mile hill up from the beach, normally an 18 mph job, went at a solid 23 today. Maybe there is something to be said for beating yourself to a pulp then doing nothing for a month...

run 1:46:00 [2] 10.4 mi (10:12 / mi)

Palisades to the hub, then the eagle rock loop. Stupidly hot today, and I didn't wait long enough to start (just after 5), it was still up in the high 90s. At least it was a little breezy.

Got some new runnings shoes, I tried to get them in D width instead of the normal EEEE, just to see if they would work (since they're a lot easier to find). Sadly no, they don't work. Many raw spots all over the toes.

roller ski 1:08:45 [4] 19.6 km (3:30 / km)
shoes: v2s #1

hills: 5:23, 5:23, 5:30 (L), 5:20 (L), 5:33, 5:50 (L)

Note

Since I broke all the easy bike parts during RAAM, I've moved on to the more difficult ones now. I got two blocks home from work today (on the crappy mt bike) and my back wheel sorta fell off. I'm not really sure what this piece is actually called, its not the quick release skewer, but the next tube outwards on the back wheel. The one that supports all the weight (and is usually one piece), and holds all the little ball bearings in there. Well turns out mine is now in two pieces, and all the little ball bearings are spread around the intersection of Wilshire and Westwood Blvds. But it was a lovely walk home.

hit a stick on the way down the last one and had a fairly fantastic wipeout. Fortunately I was pretty close to the side so I managed to dive onto the grass, but unfortunately this is LA and we don't have grass, so I spent a few minutes picking gravel out of my elbow and hip.

hiking 2:00:00 [2] 7.5 mi (16:00 / mi)

did the entire Mt Wilson section of the HPS list, all 7 peaks: Mts Lowe, Markham, Disappointment, Deception, San Gabriel, Occidental, and Wilson. Not bad for 7.5 miles. Granted I drive to the summit of Wilson, but it still counts. Wandered around the observatories and zillions of microwave towers for a while afterwards. It seems ok until you get back into the car, then the radio plays nothing but pulsating static (even when I was playing from a CD). Thats gotta be good for you.

temescal to venice and back. whoever said this is just like rollerskiing is full of it. these wheels are tiny! and the brake doesn't work worth crap. I guess I just haven't done this in a while. At least the boots hurt just as much as my ski boots, so its training for that. Actually I think I just need to rotate my wheels, since they're pretty angled on this side. I also think I'm going to be doing a lot of long workouts on rollerblades instead of the skis, because its a lot easier to go places on these (up stairs, across grass, etc) in order to link the good sections. The skis I would have to loop the same 6k section all day long.
