Note

felt pretty crappy (quasi-sickish) when I got up this morning, so I decided to take a day off and clean the apartment. also built a sweet wax bench. a vast improvement over the previous system - the stack of books and table clamp in the background.

we have some santa-ana style dry winds coming through (ie fire season) so it was pretty hot out there today.

ski-o! race 1:33:00 [4] 20.0 km (4:39 / km)

yea excercise! ski-o at Tahoe XC. felt pretty tired, I'm guessing from both not sleeping and not acclimatizing. I probably could have guessed that would have happened, but I suppose its good to have tried it since know I know for sure that it won't work. on a good note the new map holder works really well, except that I seem to snot rocket on it a lot.

skate ski 1:45:00 [2] 20.0 km (5:15 / km)

warm up + cooldown + pickup controls + bonus loop at the end.

Saturday Jan 21, 2006 #

Note

another 'rest' day. spent the morning finishing up things for the first OTCF race, and dealing with the associated headaches. ok migranes. but I think I might just pull this thing off. then drove up to sacramento for the ski-o race in tahoe tomorrow. typing this from the hotel room on the shiny new laptop!

Friday Jan 20, 2006 #

Note

so they canceled the race at sequoia tomorrow, for reasons that no one quite knows. especially weird as this is probably the best january snow they've had in years. maybe I'll hit yosemite instead?

at the beach. super windy, it kept causing my poles to plant inside my skis, which is not so graceful.

soccer 1:00:00 [3]

the cactus leg was cramping up pretty bad today.

Monday Jan 16, 2006 #

Note

So we didn't get today as a holiday from work, but instead of coming to work we could spend the day volunteering for some good cause if we wanted to. So a bunch of us spent the day working down at the beach cleaning stuff up with the Surfrider Foundation. Mostly light-labor sort of things, which was a good active-rest day I suppose. Although you could definitely tell that most programmers aren't cut out for this stuff, as most of the others were sore and worn out by lunchtime.

some pics from the weekend. From the finish of the sprint, and the full moon sat night.

orienteering 1:44:00 [3] 10.4 km (10:00 / km)

Anza Blue day 2
Overall quite a crappy race. Legs were tired from yesterday, and I was probably still dehydrated. I was pre-starting so I could help with things, and my start time was at 8. But at 6:50 they came by and let me know that that was a mistake, the start window was earlier today and it really meant 7. So by 7:15 I was going, full of oatmeal and not much water. I bombed 1, stopping short by about four reentrants, and things didn't get much better for the next 14 controls. Little mistakes on most of them. The left leg hurt pretty bad from the cactus, until I sprained the right ankle on 5, and then it felt relatively better. Most of the running today was flat and on really sandy soil, so it was just work.

orienteering race 34:56 [3] 2.0 km (17:28 / km)

Anza Maze-O
Enough of this running crap, finally we get into full contact orienteering. Cliffs and mud banks and rocky slopes and slot canyons. A lesson in insane map simplification. Won by a couple minutes over Mikkel, who I think was a couple minutes again ahead of the next guy. Went back down in the canyons afterwards with Spike to shoot some sundance quality video of Clem crashing through the slots.

orienteering race 1:29:00 [3] 8.9 km (10:00 / km) +370m 8:17 / km

Anza Blue day 1
First half of the course was down through the steep cliffed out reentrant terrain, where I thought I did really well. Second half was up on the flat half-meter contour stuff, and I was tired by this point so I started paying less attention to things. Ran pretty far off the map at 11, then on the way back kicked a big cholla which left spines from mid-shin to my knee. Lost probably 8-10 minutes off the map, 2-3 picking out as many cactus spines as I could. Took another 30 minutes with a pair of pliers after the race to get most of them out, though there are still (tuesday) quite a few in there deep.

orienteering race 23:45 [4] 2.8 km (8:29 / km) +120m 6:59 / km

Anza Sprint
Pretty good run. Bad route choice to 2 (should have taken the ridge with the trail), and stopped one reentrant short on 10.

Note

I think a rest day today. The back is a little tired. Not really sore, but it feels like its about to be. Also have to get up wicked early to drive down to san diego tomorrow for the 8am start, plus I still have crazy amounts of work to do for the start of the CF tournament next weekend. You all have signed up already haven't you? Everyone else and their mother already has.

skate ski warm up/down 50:00 [3] 12.0 km (4:10 / km)

warm up/down for the race. nice solid packed powder, snow temps about 30 degrees, air temp probably 40. didn't go t-shirt style, but a bunch of other people did.

skate ski race 45:06 [4] 15.0 km (3:00 / km)

race. Went pretty good. Right out of the start I got into a pack leading three other people, managed to hold them off for the first 10k before they passed me, and by about 13k they took off and I couldn't keep up. They were all locals so I guess they had the altitude thing (9k) going for them. Felt pretty good all the way through, a little winded towards the end, and my left hip was really sore for the second half. results

skate ski 1:42:00 [2] 22.0 km (4:38 / km)

Took a little nap then went back out to loosen up a bit before driving home. It was nicely up in the high 40s by now, though the snow was still cold and fluffy (this mornings HF7 was still working fine).

Saturday Jan 7, 2006 #

skate ski 1:33:00 [2] 20.0 km (4:39 / km)

Finally, enough of this cold wax crap, and back to the proper skiing conditions. Some easy loops around Tamarack to check out the course for tomorrow. Saw how they manage to groom in 5' of new powder - you just send a train of five groomers bumper to bumper down the trail. Looked pretty impressive, and I would have gotten a picture if I wasn't diving out of the way in fear.

skate ski 1:03:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:30 / km)

back out in the afternoon. even with the race tomorrow this is still a training weekend...

Friday Jan 6, 2006 #

roller ski 44:00 [3] 12.0 km (3:40 / km)
shoes: v2s #1

at the beach, down to the Santa Monica pier and back. Still hot and dry this morning, it only cooled off to the low 70s overnight.

run 16:00 [3] 2.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

When I started the car this morning the "malfunction indicator light" came on. The helpful manual said that that indicates a malfunction. I figured I should get that looked at before driving 600 miles to the race through the middle of the nowhere desert tomorrow, so I dropped it off at the dealer after skiing and ran home.

soccer 1:00:00 [3]

play a bunch of random mexican guys in a scrimmage game. sunny and uber-hot today - 85 deg!

run 35:10 [2] 4.2 mi (8:22 / mi)

felt pretty crappy from soccer so I wanted to loosen up after work. I think I was just dehydrated. not sure the run really helped with that.

wow three night runs in a row. I hope this stuff isn't habit forming.

Note

no training today, but I spent two hours cleaning the mold fest that exploded in the shower while I was away. thats gotta count for something.

the ski race at mammoth this weekend looks like a go, as they got 7' of snow yesterday. note thats not inches, its feet.
