Day 2.
Just about the only redeeming quality of today was that it was 2k shorter than yesterday.

BAOC O in the Oaks A-meet.
A pretty miserable race. Routes went straight up steep hills for 20 contours at a time, the dead grass on the hillsides made footing impossible, and just because you're contouring across a super-steep hillside doesn't mean its as fast as flat. Not sure where the published "500-550m" of climb came from.

Note

look what we got last weekend, don't all you northern states wish you had some of this!

run 1:12:00 [3] 7.3 mi (9:52 / mi)

Run with Mikkel from Vermont canyon up to Mt Hollywood, then over to Mt Lee (where the Hollywood sign actually is). Had an unplanned traverse across a dodgy scrub hillside, since we were going off a geologic map that had no contours and had roads and foot trails mapped with the same symbol. But at least it had the local fault lines mapped in case there were earthquakes. Found out they're serious about "park closes at dusk" as the police were driving around the roads below us with megaphones announcing closure time and that everyone should be out by now. Also found out that when we got back to the cars and ours were the only ones left that they were probably talking specifically to us...

In the rain.

Sunday Oct 16, 2005 #

Note

So its been raining on and off all day today. First time in 6 months? You can tell each time it starts because the people in the street start screaming.

roller ski 1:26:00 [3] 16.0 km (5:23 / km) +600m 4:32 / km

Drove up to Mt Pinos to ski the access road. Dropped the skis in a bush at the bottom, drove to the top, road the bike down, then dropped the bike in the bush and grabbed the skis. Going up is 16k long, 2200ft of climb, 0ft of descent. Wouldn't have been too bad if the poles would stick in, but they were skipping a lot which made some of the steep parts tough. I was kinda hoping it would be better, since this would be a great workout if the surface was good.

Also I broke the break. One of the screws that held it on wiggled its way loose and fell off, so the other side couldn't hold all the side to side torque (just from normal skiing) and sheared off. Pretty flimsy aluminum. Good thing I wasn't planning on coming down.

orienteering 1:18:21 [3] 8.0 km (9:48 / km) +345m 8:03 / km

I couldn't drive all the way up here and not run around in the woods a little. I took the blue course that I set for the meet back in June, and blanked out everything that wasn't on my route. Then I went through and took out everything I didn't need to navigate each leg, so the only things left were the important features. The result looked like this. Sorta like corridor orienteering, but I also removed a lot of things from within the corridor. Only made one mistake, going to 13, where I started heading towards an open area that I had blanked out. It was pretty good training, I found I was running a lot faster than I would normally, even considering I was tired from the morning and haven't been up at this altitude in months. Though I'm not sure if thats because I already had the routes planned and simplified, or because I had set out the courses and controls a few months ago and knew what the control sites looked like.

Note

oh yea, and driving down the road to leave I went through the rising cloud layer (near whiteout), and this morning (sunday) the mountain has a couple inches of snow!

soccer 1:00:00 [3]

clear and hot. the sprinkers came on towards the end, but we played right through the middle of them.

run 1:37:42 [3] 8.0 mi (12:13 / mi) +300m 10:56 / mi

ran the El Prieto loop above Pasadena with Mikkel. started about 6, it was still pretty hot out and I was still a bit dehydrated after soccer. but a good run none the less. the trail climbed up on a fire road for 4 miles or so, then dropped a bit and we turned off onto a single track trail down the bottom of a canyon. the sun was down by then, and in the canyon the moon didn't help too much. we brought headlamps this time, but I forgot to check my batteries, which were dead, so I spent the entire decent following the reflectors on the heals of Mikkel's shoes and trying to put my feet exactly where he did to avoid the rocks.

roller ski 50:00 [3] 12.6 mi (3:58 / mi)
shoes: v2s #1

took a fall early in the first lap (hit a wet stick in the dark) and never really seemed to get it together after that, so I cut it short at four laps. I think my tires were a little flat, which may have been making the skis more unstable than usual.

run 32:38 [3] 4.2 mi (7:46 / mi)

I was gonna go to the local o-meet today, but when I got up this morning the car battery was dead. Got it jumped and drove around for a while, and found out that the right mirror adjustment motor is stuck on. I guess thats what killed the battery in the first place. Went and parked it outside the dealer, even though they don't open until tomorrow, and then walked home. I figure the battery wouldn't survive the night at home and I'd just have to get it jumped tomorrow morning anyway.

Anyway at that point it was too late for a bike ride and too hot for a run, so I did laundry instead. I couldn't convince myself that was an equal training replacement for the o-meet, so after it cooled down I got in a run.

road bike 1:52:00 [3] 30.1 mi (16.1 mph)

good morning ride down to the beach, up into the palisades and then up and back mandeville canyon.

been reading up on how to make strong bike wheels, and apparently the spokes need to be a lot tighter than I had mine. I cranked them all down a bunch (probably still not enough) and didn't seem to have any problems, so I guess I'll go tighter next time.

roller ski 48:00 [3] 12.6 km (3:49 / km)
shoes: v2s #1

finally got around to mounting the brake on these things, which turns out to work quite well. also put the new roller ski ferrules onto the poles, which don't really make much of a difference other than the knowledge that I'm not destroying my snow baskets.

run 49:21 [3] 5.9 mi (8:22 / mi)

not bad for the first 4, but the last couple I looped over towards Brentwood, which is below one of the canyons thats burning. the air got a little thick in places, kinda like a foggy day that smells like a campfire. much better than yesterday though.
