Note

so I went to bed at 5 saturday night, and got up at 1am. drove up to yosemite all night, got there at daybreak. driving was kinda tough since the middle 200 miles was covered in super thick fog, which at night made the visibility about three dashed white lines ahead of you on the road.

skate ski (skate) 3:06:00 [3] 37.0 km (5:02 / km) +600m 4:39 / km

skied the glacier point road. the first 8k had been groomed last night, the rest last week. it was still frozen solid on the way out, and there were lots of ruts and tracks melted in from the day before, which made for some dodgy downhills. saw no one until almost back to the parking lot.

skate ski (skate) 2:54:00 [3] 35.5 km (4:54 / km) +500m 4:35 / km

lap two in the afternoon. this is xc california-style. air temperature when I left: 75 degrees in the shade. horray for yellow wax. the snow had about a half inch of slush on the top, but under that was solid. skiing in shorts and a tshirt, and still not getting cold on the downhills. got out to the end around sunset. stopped a little above the point, since the road down had half a dozen bare spots that I didn't want to bother walking over again. it was dark by the time I started back, skied the last 15k by solid moonlight. passed the groomer on his way out, so the last 8k uphill was super smooth. (temp when I got back to the car: 22 deg)

Note

fog was still there on the drive back. had to stop every hour for nap time, so I didn't get home until about 4am. kinda long for a daytrip, so I don't think I'll be doing this too often. but the views made it worth it, probably the best ski day I've had yet.

Saturday Dec 18, 2004 #

Note

was going to go skiing for the entire weekend, but I didn't get out of work until 2am last night, so that didn't happen. did some xmas shopping instead, although its kinda hard to get into the christmas spirit when its 90 degrees outside...

road bike 58:00 [3] 16.8 mi (17.4 mph)

now that all the running is done for the year I can start biking again. biking makes me run slow, but I think thats just because I'd rather go for a ride than for a run, so if I let myself ride too much it displaces all the training I would have had running.

orienteering 2:00:00 [1]

too much training to count. setting controls in the morning, picking them up afterwards, vetting a course or two, running out to the water control to drop off the fruitcake, and running maps from the finish/sportident tent to the start. we had a few more people than expected, and I hadn't printed nearly enough maps. we were printing more, but it only goes so fast, so there was a bit of a wait for people to get started. once people got out everyone seemed to like the courses, so it all ended up ok. we had a lot of dnf's since the majority of people at our meets are beginners, but I guess they saw the short-course lengths and did ones that were way to hard for them. I guess I didn't make it clear enough that red is not a good step up from yellow. but they ate all the fruitcake.

orienteering 2:00:00 [1]

setting out controls at Vasquez. so much for the nice cool weather, it was 85 today.

hiking 1:00:00 [1]

setting water controls. 8 gallons at a time. I gotta say the big orange backpack handles that much weight pretty well. so who's genius idea was it to put water at the control farthest from the parking lot, at the top of the hill?

orienteering 2:00:00 [1]

finished up the streamers at Vasquez. on and off rain all morning. just after I got back to the parking lot it let loose with an impressive downpour, I think it was even hailing a little bit

orienteering 2:00:00 [3] 12.0 km (10:00 / km)

setting streamers for the meet next weekend at Vasquez Rocks. probably 5 hours I think. hit 40/50 control sites, gotta get the rest tomorrow. had to move around almost all of them a little, since its hard to tell from the map if a feature is useable or not. most of the boulders have a side or two that's surrounded by waist high scrub, so you can't stick a control there. fortunately there are enough rock features that you can spit from one to the next.
