orienteering 9:56 [3] 1.61 km (6:10 / km) +67m 5:07 / km

Sprints around Dads house to test out his new SI toys. Took a while to loosen up after yesterday, but I was feeling ok by the third lap.

hiking 12:44:13 [3] 18.65 mi (40:59 / mi) +2602m 28:35 / mi

Presi Traverse hike with Dad. Pretty awesome day, 40 in the morning, 60ish during the day, totally clear and not really any wind, and all the rocks were dry. Still plenty busy on the top of Washington, but not too many people out otherwise. Pictures.

orienteering 1:40:27 [3] 10.81 km (9:17 / km) +433m 7:44 / km

NAOC long at Burnt Mt, very technical map that I couldn't read well and made many mistakes. Didn't have too great of a time.

2 PM

run 20:00 [3] 1.5 km (13:20 / km)

orienteering race 49:50 [3] 5.8 km (8:35 / km) +204m 7:18 / km

NAOCs middle distance in Hanover NH. Made lots of mistakes, but all small ones. Just nothing too clean. Had lots of problems reading the vegetation on the map, there were lots of things in the woods that I thought should have been mapped as fields that weren't on there. But still pretty fun when there were other things to navigate with. Still felt good running, even up all the hills.

9 AM

run 1:58:05 [3] 9.51 mi (12:25 / mi) +570m 10:28 / mi

Adventure Wednesday takes an easy week, as there's actually only three days between last weekend's races and next weekend's. Ran one of dad's loops on the AT from Mad Tom Notch up over Stiles and Peru Peaks, then looped back around on a snowmobile road along the side.

11 AM

orienteering race 15:43 [3] 2.25 km (6:59 / km) +106m 5:39 / km

Sprint relay in the morning in NY. Ran second leg on a team with Ethan. Managed to catch Tori at one point, then blew it at the end and finished just behind her.

orienteering 18:02 [3] 2.14 km (8:26 / km) +88m 7:00 / km

Easy jog around the other relay course.
5 PM

orienteering race 13:40 [3] 2.08 km (6:35 / km) +2m 6:33 / km

Corn Maze! Classic course, made infinity mistakes and almost drowned a few times, but all the mistakes were easily recognized once I made them so I got right back on track.

orienteering race 6:43 [3] 1.08 km (6:14 / km) +2m 6:10 / km

Corn Maze sprint score-o. Had a poor route choice through a couple of them, so I burned lots of time there. Also I think the water got deeper in a few places after I punched holes in all the mud during the first race.
8 PM

orienteering race 23:40 [3] 3.03 km (7:49 / km) +3m 7:47 / km

Post-dinner corn maze night-o. Got to skip 4, which I think I made good use of (2+3, then the one outside the maze, then the super long out and back at the end (28?)). Slipped in the muddy puddle half of the map once and locked my knee back, which hurt a lot, but it ran itself out in a minute or two and feels fine the next day, which I'll chalk up to the increasing long term health of my knees, as that wouldn't have been the case 15 years ago.

orienteering 1:13:32 [3] 9.72 km (7:34 / km) +379m 6:20 / km

Day two. The woods were crappier today, with lots of dodgy "white forest". It was also like 300% humidity, so I felt like dying. No big mistakes though, so still a good time.

10 AM

run 6:46 [3] 0.64 mi (10:38 / mi) +43m 8:48 / mi

orienteering 1:13:33 [3] 9.32 km (7:54 / km) +421m 6:26 / km

Classic champs at Ward Pound Ridge. Went mostly pretty well. Had a fairly big mistake on 2, but otherwise things went ok. Felt great running.

2 PM

orienteering 1:04:20 [3] 6.13 km (10:29 / km) +305m 8:24 / km

Model event for classic champs at Westmoreland. Pretty fun, though there were lots of crappy rocks on the ground, and I was all sorts of tired from flying over and getting to sleep at 3am.

Wednesday Sep 14, 2016 #

10 AM

run 4:49:10 [3] 15.74 mi (18:22 / mi) +1545m 14:05 / mi

Long run from the base of Squaw up to the top of Granite Chief, then out along its ridgeline to Needle Pk and Lyon Pk. The trail up was ok once I got on it (had a bit of a detour at the start), just steep and full of bees. From Granite Chief out to the far end was no trail, and pretty crappy boulder hopping / side hilling across scrubby loose dirt. Apparently it's not too popular of a route, the summit can on Lyon only had three other people in it for this whole year.

Then backtracked, which went faster because I wasn't wasting time trying to find a good route, just bashing across the crappy stuff. Then wandering down the access roads of Squaw, which were also full of bees.

8 AM

run 5:49:44 [3] 24.17 mi (14:28 / mi) +1438m 12:13 / mi

Long run around Castle Peak. Started in Soda Springs, ran up through ASC to the Boreal PCT trailhead, took that up and out on the backside of Castle Peak towards Warren Lake. Never been back there, its pretty nice. Then up Basin Peak and along the ridge and up Castle Peak, which gets appropriate ridgeline points for being awesome. Then down and a loop around Hole in the Ground back to the car.

Did better on the water/salt/food trifecta today, didn't bonk, though I was pretty beat by the end. Slipped and fell on a rock-in-dusty-trail on a downhill just at the end, and one leg instacramped, but not too bad and that was all. Took 7 salt pills, 8-10 gu/blocks/granola bars, and drank 5.5 liters of water. Then drank another 1-2 at the car, then had two cheeseburgers and a big coke, and still lost 14 lbs for the day...

The new toy is a Sawyer Mini water filter, which is super tiny and light, but hopefully works. Guess we'll find out in a couple days. Its slow as crap though. There were streams a plenty on the east side of the crest, because both Castle Peak and Basin still have snowfields and thus snowmelt. But for the second half on the west side everything was bone dry except for the one lake I went sortof nearby to. It looks appealing but was actually full of slime and dead flies. Drank it anyway, we'll see how good the filter was. Also dead flies clog up a filter cartridge asap.

Also ran into a friend from high school coming down castle peak. Go figure.

orienteering 1:02:59 [3] 5.74 km (10:58 / km) +109m 10:01 / km

Setting flags. Tricky stuff, had to double check everything, and put down flags at the feature a couple times only to change my mind on the run out and go back and move it.

orienteering 39:38 [3] 5.07 km (7:49 / km) +91m 7:11 / km

Thursday night training at burton creek, with Carol and visiting jukola event advisor Jaakko. Ran it backwards after setting it forwards. This map is so much fun, so many rocks!
