hiking 2:00:00 [3] 10.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Hiked Observation Pt from the bottom of Zion canyon, which was lots of switchbacks up (some dodgier than others) and through a few sweet hanging slot canyons. Also critter. Then hiked up to the head of the canyon to look at the river, which we'll get further up some day.

hiking 1:30:00 [3]

Roadtrip-roadtrip up to Bryce, which didn't have too much going on due to a couple feet of snow, but a few of the trails down into the pretty bits were packed down, so we hike down there and took lots of pictures.

hiking 2:00:00 [3] 5.5 mi (21:49 / mi)

Road trip! Down in Zion, hiked Angels Landing. It was much warmer than last time I did it (in January), and equally sweet. Also thanksgiving.

orienteering race 42:21 [3] 8.41 km (5:02 / km) +35m 4:56 / km

Mats from Sacramento is starting up a quasi-orienteering/trailcross/AR sortof league for school kids this winter, so Carol and I went down to test run the prototype course with a couple other people. It was a short flagged trail run, followed by a loop of easy orienteering, followed by a long off-trail run (straight out to a rock in the middle of the lake and back), followed by a second orienteering loop. Pretty fun, I would totally race one of these every week if they existed. It seemed better than the two BAOC trailcrosses we've done, maybe because it was trying to be orienteering less, even though it had at least as much. So the impression I got was that it was a fun xc race, not a weak orienteering race. Though maybe that was just from preconceptions going into all three.

They took down the bridge at the top end of the valley today, looks like they're finally getting serious about this winter stuff. Its supposed to snow for the next three days, but not really in impressive amounts.

mtn bike 54:26 [3] 7.24 mi (8.0 mph) +217m

A little sore this morning, but I generally feel pretty good today. Not that I want to go for a run or anything.

Ultralong champs at Pacheco. Long and lots of hills. Terrain was flatter and more blah than yesterday, but there was still a stupidly appropriate amount of sidehilling. Pretty tired by the end, on the edge of lots of cramping, and I walked a lot of the last 5k.

Pacheco middle distance. First half was fun, bouncing back and forth around some steep gullies. Lots of parallel contours from both sides of the reentrants, so made one mistake where I read the bottom as a couple contours in the wrong spot and climbed too much. Second half was all side hill back up to the start, and so was a whole lot less fun. Course got thrown out because one was in the wrong spot by a bit.

We had a girl from Sac State come up to run (she's learning to teach orienteering), but she'd only done it a couple times, so Carol went out with her to start then I caught up and we switched.

run 34:24 [3] 3.62 km (9:30 / km) +268m 6:56 / km

Section number 5 of Carol's Rim Trail challenge, on the east side at Spooner Lake. Not too much snow on the trail, and a couple inches of crunchy stuff in patches in the woods. It was pretty chilly to start with, and once we got higher up and exposed on the ridge it got breezy and super freezy. Probably should have had long pants on.

orienteering 25:05 [3] *** 2.93 km (8:34 / km) +14m 8:22 / km

Once we got all the way up we figured we'd satisfied the trail challenge part, and since it just happened that the whole thing was on the spooner o-maps we'd brought along we rocked a few controls on the way back down. Pretty frozen by the time I got back to the car.

Saturday Nov 2, 2013 #

2 PM

run 43:12 [3] 3.73 mi (11:35 / mi) +164m 10:11 / mi

Run with Carol up on top of the mountain. A little cloudy and lots of breezy, but pretty warm. Most of the snow has melted or been tracked down, but there was still enough to posthole knee-high through in a couple spots and plenty for snowballs. And then we got engaged.

2 PM

road bike 42:53 [3] 9.44 mi (13.2 mph) +202m

Warm and sunny, lots of snow, and it smells like wood smoke. Not a bad fall day. The knee doesn't hurt either.
