hiking 3:00:00 [2] 10.0 mi (18:00 / mi) +1600m 12:01 / mi

Dayhike with Carol up Matterhorn Peak in northern Yosemite, from Twin Lakes. A mile or two up a real trail, then a bit up a pretty good use trail, then another mile or two up some non-existant use trail to Horse Creek Pass. Up the ridgeline and a short dodgy 4th class bit to the top. Then back down off the summit block to the top of the East Couloir. I don't know if the phrase "hey carol you wanna go on an adventure?" was ever explicitly spoken, but it was perhaps implied. In my defense it looked like easy loose scree all the way down to the [flattish] glacier, until we got halfway down and found the steep icy snowy part. Carol was quite a good sport and figured out the whole ice axe / crampon thing on the spot very well given the crappy location we decided to do it. Then down some more loose scree and onto the easier main glacier.

Got down off that and while taking off the crampons, learned why you're always supposed to leave a filter on the front of your camera lens. While picking it up the strap got caught on rock edge and pulled it out of my hands, so the camera fell about two feet lens-first onto a pointy rock, bounced a couple times and clattered down into a hole. Camera is [mostly] fine, lens is fine, filter is trashed. Though even with how destroyed that looks, I left it on the lens for the rest of the day and took pictures through it, and you can barely notice it (just the dark spot in the sky here). Likely because the T2i has a 1.6-crop sensor, so its not using the outside of the lens anyway (where the big glass chunk is missing). Anyway, oops.

Then down the slope from the glacier trying to get back onto the main valley floor, which was a long ways down and full of cliffs and trees and bushes. Only got stuck and had to backtrack up once, but as we got closer to the bottom both the veggies and the mosquitos got thicker. Easy splash across Horse Creek and then the long slog back down the trail. Got back to the car just before dark, 12h rt. photos.

Long run around the lower TD trail loop. I tried this once before just after I moved up here, but it got dark and started snowing and I got pretty lost. It went a little better this time.

Score-o, 90 minutes. quickroute. Small course, so it looked pretty easy to clean it all in 90 minutes. Joseph, Dennis, and I did basically the same route (clockwise), with a couple swapped on the western side. No big mistakes, just climbed a little high before 113 at the end. Good times. Yay climb.

Mt Pinos morning Blue. quickroute. Pretty good run. Contours were really weird right out of the start, I think the reentrants were steeper than shown, so I ended up at 14 first instead of 1. Then mostly good slogging up the hill. 7-8 would have been a whole lot faster coming down the ridgeline, the bottom of the gully was rocky and crappy.

Afternoon 'prolog' sprint. quickroute. Sortof-downhill sprint for seeding for the night-o chase. Definitely not all downhill, but still really fun with the controls wedged in between the road and the trail, so it was fast all the way down. 4-5 would have been faster to stay on the trail longer and just cut the end (through the 5), my route was just bonus climb. Chasing James for the second half of it, but then he beat me on the run in to the wildly misplaced finish.

Night-o chase start! quickroute. Awesome. Jonas went out first, I was 1:10 back, and Joseph and Mikkel were 30 seconds behind me (then a couple more people, then a mass-start of ~25 people at 10 minutes back). No sign of Jonas when I started, and I promptly missed the first trail junction and blew my 30 second lead, so the three of us were together at 1. The woods were super crappy to 2, the trail would have been better since we ended up there anyway. About halfway to 3 the light-bulbity part of the MagicShine fell off the head-strappity part, which makes it less useful for running. I wrapped the wire a couple times around the head strap so the light sortof hung off the side ghetto style, which worked but bounced around a whole lot. Also since the light was now wedged against my head, and also on super-bright-super-hot-mode, it was sortof burning my hair. But by shifting it around every minute or two I seemed to finish without any permanent damage.

Anyway Joseph and Mikkel sortof bobbled 3 so I caught up again by 4, we ran together to 5, then royally screwed up 6. It all sortof made sense at the time, and the ground was so crappy and slashy that nobody was paying too much attention to the map, we were just trying not to trip and die. Mikkel figured it out first, and was highest up the hill at the time, so he got about a minute lead which he held through the finish. Joseph and I both stopped short on 7, then together to the finish. Meanwhile Jonas ran the whole thing by himself totally clean and beat us all by 7 minutes.

My busted eyeball got really ouchie last night and on the first flight this morning, but then got better on the long flight here so I actually got to sleep for a bit. Jukola! Leg 5, after sunrise. Holy first leg mistake. Had a couple hundred meters through some pretty flat marsh/bare rock stuff (after the one km to the start point), and everything was making sense fine and then all of a sudden nothing matched. I was really just one bare rock patch away from where I should have been, but I relocated assuming I was on a different one, which sortof made things worse. Wandered around a bit and a couple tries later found it. Quickroute says I lost about 9 minutes. Oops. But then I went on and nailed every other control so it averaged out to not too bad of a run. Got a pine tree in the eyeball pretty hard about halfway through, so now it hurts to look at things. Also it hurts to not look at things. I think the upcoming 23 hours of airplane time are going to be very uncomfortable.

Up Mt Lassen, with Andrew and Jard on skis, and Jon and I in crampons. Easy boot track halfway up, then the ski boot kids went up the ridgeline and Jon and I went out and up the snowy part of the east face. Windy on top, and just at the cloud level so we were in and out every couple minutes. Back down the face to catch the other two as they went by, then down to the bottom to watch them do a couple more laps on the side snowfield. Which degraded into pond skimming in remarkably little time.

Headed up to Lassen NP for the weekend with Carol, Jon, Andrew, and Andrew's friend Jard. Got up there around lunchtime, and headed up high to play in the snow. Carol and I on snowshoes, the other three on skis, we headed for an easy hike up Eagle Pk. Back out, around to the north side of the mountain to check out the eruption zone, then stopped on the way back to camp to snort some gas from the volcanic mud pits. And Jon has a tent with inflatable poles.

The dull glow of the monitor flickered on and off. On and off. It buzzed as though full of wasps, but quietly, like they were further away than they should have been. I sat slumped at my desk, tapping away on the keyboard impatiently, incessantly. I had code to write, and I needed it done soon. Problem was, I couldn't think. It was stuffy inside with the June afternoon heat. It used to be cooler, I thought, but at least its never as bad as downtown. The windows were cracked for a sorry breeze, but that only let in the racket from next door.

Two dames and the new guy in town, Vinnie, were getting ready for a good weekend. Brought his boat up from the big city, heading down to the lake. Going to be a great time, he thought. But then the coppers showed up. Frank and Hoss. Keeping the peace, not always for the right reasons, but they're good at what they do, so everyone lets them run. "Can't park your boat there, kid," says Frank. "Against housing regulations," drawls Hoss. Vinnie stammers and stutters and tries to explain himself, but deep down he knows he's wrong. The cops know he's wrong, and so just let him work it. Hell I know he's wrong, and I don't even care about boats. All I care about is getting out of here.

I walk down the steps, mulling over the work I'm not doing. Its bright out here; the sun never shone like this down in the city. I squint and pull down the brim of my cap, my head screaming in pain, but I couldn't tell if it was from Vinnie or just the day before. Its always from the day before. I step by the police cruiser just as Frank is pulling a crate of booze out of the boat. "Those are just packed with camping gear," Vinnie declared nervously, as the crate clinks to the floor a little too hard. Not the brightest bulb in the box. The dame in the back of the boat takes a swig from her camping gear and tosses it in the bush. But Hoss is watching. Hoss is always watching. Thats why he's so damn good.

Earlier I had choked down a cold bologna and ketchup sandwich for lunch. I knew I'd regret it, but it was all I could care for. The instant I hit the main road and started running, I did indeed regret it. Not a wise choise, I thought to myself. It was going to be a long day. I struggle down the creek until the turn at the campsite. Water washed out the trail in more places than seemed decent, cutting left and right and occasionally down the middle, like a five year old trying to color between the lines. Up on the far side it was dry, but dirty and hot. I try to stay in the trees, but its worthless up here, you just can't get away. I check out the power lines on top, it's more of the same. I double back just in case, I don't know why.

By the time I hit the main road again, I hear sirens wailing in the distance. I hope thats Vinnie, I think smugly. Put him away and maybe we'll get a quiet weekend around here. Sure, you can hope, I tell myself. I've seen a lot of this place over the years, but one thing never changes: weekends are never what you'd like. But I maintain the lie as I head across the flitting shadows of the subdivision, its easier to think that way, and today is not the day for change.
