dp of death loop. or half of it I suppose. nice and warm out, and the tracks are getting pretty solid.

Note

pics from turkey day in death valley.

also I did eventually get the climbing pics from china up. here's the climb, and here's shanghai, lhasa, and tibet. also all the other orienteering and whatnot from The Fall Adventure are up there too.

ahr:150 max:164 shoes: 10 atomic red cheetahs

chilly and cold this morning (no degrees), it took another fifteen minutes of idling to get the transmission out of park. snow was squeaky and slow, but it matched my joints so it was ok.

skate ski 1:03:47 intensity: (7 @0) + (26 @1) + (9:29 @2) + (19:48 @3) + (33:57 @4) 13.6 km (4:41 / km) +377m 4:07 / km

It got all the way up to 20 degrees, so I went out for a quick loop up the mountain. Then the sun set and it went all insta-cold, just about the time I was ready to go down the hill with a soaking wet hat on. It made ice cream brain freezes seem fun.

Dev and Roommate went up downhilling, and Zan wanted to play the skate game, so we went next door to TD. Snow was that nice relaxing greasy packed new powder, so it was a good tour around, mostly dp.

Back out in the afternoon for some skate. The nice greasy packed powder wasn't quite solid enough to handle my biggnitude skating, so I ended up punching though a bit between the groomer tracks. But it was sunny and warm so it didn't really matter.

Note

Why is it that the hardest part of all my adventures is trying to get home? I drove back up 395 through Mammoth, which was great until just after Bishop, then it started snowing a lot. I made it over that pass ok and got back down low around Mono lake, but then going up that pass it started rocking out the whiteout blizzard dude-wheres-the-road sortof thing. So I stopped and put on the chains (voluntarily, without prompting from the chp, which I think is a first), and managed to fishtail my way and over that one. The next one was fairly uneventful, and I took the chains back off once it got back down going into Reno. But then 80 up to home was closed due to too many stupid people with drivers licenses, so to kill some time I went to watch Harry Potter (which was obviously good), but it wasn't long enough because once it got out the snow was worse and the highway was closed even further from home, so I slept in the parking lot for a bit. Eventually they opened 80 back up again, but only to locals (and my drivers license still has the LA address), so I went up, put the chains back on, and managed to sweet talk my way through (I got mad charm yo). The highway up was fine (and empty) so that part was good, and then I got to paddle-wheel my way up northwoods to the house, where all the parking spaces were full of cars or more snow, so I got to trench myself into one of the unplowed ski area lots down aways. Managed to beat Zan and Dev and Roommate up by a couple minutes, even though they started from SF about the same time I left from Reno. But hey, at least we got another two feet of snow. Cause it was getting a little thin.

hiking 2:00:00 [3] 9.0 mi (13:20 / mi) +600m 11:03 / mi

Hiked up Wildrose Peak, which was nice and viewy, and only got insanely cold and windy up on the very top of the summit. Otherwise a downright pleasant hike.

In Death Valley with Dan and Kate. Went out to the end of a 25 mile dirt road to see the racetrack, which is the big dry lake bed where all the huge rocks move around on their own. Turns out the huge rocks are actually the size of your foot, and half of them had been stolen. But we found a couple that were moving, which made it all worthwhile.

Then stopped to play on some big sand dunes in the bottom of the valley, which I wore the garmin for just to see if I could break attackpoint with some unsigned elevation action. But all is well, yay ken.

Then we deep fried some turkey parts, and made lots of other delicious turkey day dishes prepared entirely over our collection of xgk/dragonfly/jetboil awesomenesses.

Note

it finally stopped snowing and cleared up, but then it dropped to -10F. its gonna take them a couple days to beat down all the snow anyway, so I'm going down to death valley to fry some turkeys with dan. should be back just in time for the next storm.

I heard this rumor that Tahoe City was rocking out the blue sky this afternoon, so I dug out the car, slid down the mountain, and went to investigate. Blue sky might be a stretch (there was a little), but it was snowing in a pleasant sort of way, not like the angry blizzard sort of way we have at home. And they groomed, and it was mostly solid enough for me to skate, and there was a crapton of nice new snow so I got to use the good skis. Lovely. Saw Tapio and Dan Greene, who stopped by on their way through from South Lake. They looked like they haven't been rollerskiing as much as they clearly should have.

A little bc in the backyard. This was a lot of work. Did I mention it snowed last night? Though to be fair, that was around lunchtime, and it hasn't really stopped. Nor is it going to until Monday. Yay winter.

Early run to check out the map at Donner state park. Not bad, its flat, and they very aggressively brush this place for fire control so the woods are all nice and white. But there are rocks and subtle contours and veggie features and whatnot, so it would be much fun.

And now that thats out of the way, is everyone excited yet? Yes? Good. The fun may begin now.

Very muddy ride through Prosser. Didn't want to double back on the single track, so I started wandering the fire roads looking for at a least a different muddy way back. Found a random trailer park in the middle of the woods, and a couple surly looking old guys shooting semi-auto handguns into a hillside.

Up to Auburn to get my altitude on. I got a pass here too this winter, for a little variety and because it was cheap. They've got much better rolling hills than TD, which tends to be all super long death slogs for the climbs. They're not actually open yet, but they've been snowmobile grooming so the juniors could start training. Conditions were pretty good for only having a foot or two of snow, so depending on which coast you're from it was either "early season and rough" or "high season perfection". It was sunny and 50 though, and the snow was completely saturated, so I only got in three laps before my CH10 started to make me cry.

So it turns out this gets a whole lot easier after you scrape the summer wax off. It probably would have been even more awesome if I had then put actual glide wax on as well. But you don't want to jump into these things too fast.

Got another six inches last night. Yea winter. Now will somebody please start grooming? There's at least two feet on top. k thx.

Got my firewood dump this morning, so I spent a lovely hour hauling that around and stacking it into the garage, dodging plow trucks at the same time. But the house is now well on its way to the other side of 45 degrees, which will be lovely. I thought the wood I had last year was dense, but this stuff is the shizzle. Good thing I got a load of pine too, otherwise I'd never get it lit.

Anyway went out for a sweet dp around the TD trails, which weren't groomed but enough people had been around that there was a very solid track. Did a couple laps along a nice rolling fire road section on the back side until my arms wanted to fall off, then a little bushwhacking to get back down. We should have a ski-o now, there's enough snow to go anywhere, but its the last time poles will actually hit anything solid until April.

rest day. lots of snow falling all day, but not too much sticking to the ground, maybe a couple inches by nighttime. still going strong though, so hopefully it'll start stacking up once it gets colder tonight.

went down to reno and got oatmeal and a new laptop. not sure which one is more awesome. getting home was exciting, it was dark by then and the highway was a disaster between the rain and snow and lots of crazy people everywhere. and then I cooked dinner and got jalapeno in my eye.

Snuck out for a quick ride in the last pre-6-oclock daylight ever. Got chased by some girl's dog for a while, who was alternating between biting my tires and biting my ankles. Except he wasn't looking where he was going, and thus ran into a tree.

Easy ride down around the lake. Started chatting with some random old guy, and followed him around his ride through the golf courses on the far side of town, stopping occasionally to heckle the miscellaneous rollerskiers we passed. My lower back was sore all day, probably from all the new skiing this week, but we were mostly going old-guy-speed so it didn't really bother it until I split at the end to head back up the mt.

ghetto sprint on the not-so-finished TD map. My memory of where the rest of the trails were (red) was only blatantly wrong in a couple places, as opposed to my memory of vegetation (not on the map) and north lines, which were wrong most everywhere.

adding a couple more trails afterwards. made somewhat more interesting by the part where it was completely dark by now, but they were mostly big ski trails, and ghettocad works just fine at night.

I was gonna go for a long ski at the reservoir, but I got distracted adding tractor tires to the shopping cart, so I didn't get out until just before sunset. Also I somehow managed to turn the garmin back on, then start it, after I got home, so I got a bonus four hours of gps data there.
