Stopped off at a random state park looking for a paved access road to ski on, and found a rails-to-trails right through the middle of it (and across the lake on a sweet train trestle). Perfect pavement, and a long easy grade going out. Alternating dp and skate about every 10 minutes going up, then no pole skate and V2 on the way back down.

Then grabbed the ipad and caught up on the last couple weeks of CF and SCH bidness, while sitting in the sun on a dock eating a 2lb box of strawberries. I like my job.

Almost into Canadia.

Easy run around lovely Ontario, Idaho. Smells like cow poop.

correction: I think I'm actually back in Oregon. Sneaky state lines.

hiking 1:00:00 [3] 4.5 mi (13:20 / mi)

Quick morning loop hike with alex and ed up past vernal falls in the valley, which was awesome and very wet. Then lots of driving, to smf then back home. Felt good to get home and need a pile jacket to unload the car. Lots of awesome pictures from the weekend, but no real internet at home so I can't upload them yet.

hiking 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

In hetch hetchy with lots of us, we hiked out along the lake to a ginourmous waterfall, then went through it and got soaked.

hiking 30:00 [3]

setting controls in the morning before it got hot

run 45:00 [3] 6.5 km (6:55 / km)

Noon time run with lots of the csu posse, mostly with dad and alex. Out the fire road across the street, then a bushwhack down to another road back. Turns out it's hot out at noon.

Friday Jun 25, 2010 #

hiking 2:00:00 [3] 17.0 mi (7:04 / mi) +1000m 5:58 / mi

Long drive from tahoe to yosemite, picking up alex and ed along the way, then a hike up yosemite falls from the valley, and across the rim to north dome. Never been over there before, sweet views directly into half dome.

hiking 1:00:00 [3]

Hiking around with mom and dad. Up TD in the morning, then down at emerald bay in the afternoon.

Waiting for donatas to show up for the run, so I went out for a dp along the bumpy paved road through prosser. Somehow I managed to bend a pole tip, not the metal part, but the plastic, into a perfect quarter circle sideways. It's not broken or cracked, just bent. Which obviously now makes it useless. Can't remember if that's the one I replaced a couple weeks ago.

run 49:21 [3] 8.33 km (5:55 / km)
ahr:151 max:165

So the back isn't really ready for running yet. Didn't hurt as long as I wasn't going too fast, but anytime I started taking long strides it got painful.

with Donatas and some bonus Lithuanians. I think the back axle is almost toast. Not broken yet, but the cassette has stopped free wheeling, which is usually the first sign it's bending.

mtn bike 1:23:09 [3] 20.11 km (14.5 kph)

Ride around prosser. I declare the back mostly sort of fixed. Bouncing down rocky singletrack hurts less than lying down in bed. Which is good as long as I never plan on sleeping.

mapping 1:00:00 [0]

Not sure what to call this one, maybe either the '40 U-bend' or the '40 Switchbacks'. The 40 part being the old highway over donner pass, and the map being some sweet open rock slabs on either side of the road. In some places fairly vertical, but others it's really good. Of the plethora of random spots I'm ADD mapping right now, this is probably the most awesome.

Got the automagical contour button working in ghettocad. Basically you hit the 'where am I' button, then the 'make me contours' button, then it downloads lots of stuff, thinks for a while and eats half your battery, then spits out an insta-basemap. Which is sweet.

run 31:58 [3] 4.07 km (7:51 / km)
ahr:128 max:154

ooo look, there's a ski area in the backyard. super slow run up the easy trail, trying to be nice to the sore back. survived two more days of moving and cleaning, with the worst thing I did to it being vacuuming the dusty rooms and sneezing, which is unstoppably painful.

Note

also met the neighbors. they were siphoning gas out of their friend's truck.

Wednesday Jun 16, 2010 #

Note

got the moving truck today, driving over all the big stuff. slipped on some ice unloading a big heavy box and pulled something in my back, and it's been hurting more and more all day, so I skipped the workout tonight. wtf ice? it's june, and 75 degrees. it did sortof snow a little last night though...

hiking 2:00:00 [3] 9.6 mi (12:30 / mi) +1000m 9:27 / mi

Hiked up Mt Tallac (9700') from Fallen Leaf Lake. Clear of snow for the first third, then in and out of snowfields until it started climbing up out of a NE facing bowl and the trail disappeared into the cornice. Did a little detour around that up a steep scree slope on the north side, which was good for a couple ankle traps, but then crossed over to the dry east side of the ridgeline for the last 1200' or so. Sweet views of South Lake Tahoe from the top, and visits by all the usual sort of characters. Got a couple eyeball shots, but none in too good focus (thats me kneeling on the right, and the summit snowfield on the left). 6 hrs rt.

Donatas was working all day today, and the legs were getting tired at the end of the week, so I was going to take a rest day. Made it until lunch before I started getting antsy, and watching everybody whining on pg's log about how hard centuries are made me all nostalgic.

So I went out for an easy rest day ride. Went the long way down through town, then around Donner Lake, and then climbed over Donner Pass. I'm pretty sure that was the point where the whole rest day thing broke down. Its actually a pretty nice climb, the grade isn't bad at all. Once I got up past the snow line the wind got really cold, but over the top it wasn't too bad.

attempt number two on the niflheim death machines. cranked the speed reducers as tight as they could go on the loosest ratchet, which made them sortof ok when you actually engaged them. still took them off and ran down one hill. also it sucked to have them on all the time on the flats. but better than last time.

ahr:126 max:159 shoes: v2 aeros #2

So does this officially make it "next season" now?
Went out to try the nifflehoppers, but drastically overestimated the reducing power of the speed reducers, so I didn't have them tight enough and they weren't really doing anything. Went back to the car to get a wrench to tighten them up, but by then the wheels weren't tracking straght at all, and I didn't have a wrench to fix that part (I'm assuming you can?), so I gave up and switched to the V2s. At least it was a terrifying 10 minutes.
Life was much calmer with the V2s, so I went exploring a random bike trail that seemed to wander around a golf course and then over towards truckee, and even over into the neighborhood on the other side of the highway.

mtn bike 1:24:42 intensity: (1:04 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (44:55 @3) + (18:43 @4) 15.29 mi (10.8 mph)
ahr:138 max:155

Then Donatas called and wanted to go for a bike ride, which I conveniently also had in the back of the car, so I skiied back to the car, headed over to prosser and we got our singletrack on.

improved the gps a lot, still jumps around, but not quite as much. also I turned on the magnetic compass, so I can now shoot azimuths with reckless abandon.

bye bye winter

mapping 1:00:00 [0]

Yesterday's gps track of the garmin (blue) vs the ipad (purple). The ipad didn't have any filtering on it, thats just the raw gps data. They're usually pretty close, except that the ipad takes a really long time to settle, and seems to wander quite a bit while standing still.

Fixed up some of that for today, and also tried some things to help the battery drain with the gps on (yesterday was 20% / hr). The former helped a little, but not enough, and the latter only made things horribly inaccurate (though it did help the battery).

Playing with gps ghettocad in prosser. It seemed good at times, and fairly crap at others. Its possible that has something to do with the way I wrote it, it was kindof a quick first attempt.

Training at Spooner Lake with Donatas. Ran part of last years baoc club champs long course with two maps, one with controls and the other without, the guy without having to pinpoint them at each control. Then a game of follow the leader relocation at the end.

Note

new house! (condo actually). smaller than what I've got now, but 300ft higher, and $300 cheaper, which I'm pretty sure means +600 stat increase. also its right at the downhill area. not saying I can spit off the deck onto a groomed trail, but I could definitely javelin a busted ski onto one.

You'd think this might get old by now. But it doesn't.
Had to go down to Reno this afternoon (to pick up the gps ipad), so I drove over via the Mt Rose pass and stopped at the top for a little ski through the fields. Conditions weren't exactliy great, the end of the storm was just blowing through, so it was socked in with fog and wicked windy.
