orienteering 55:00 [4] 7.0 km (7:51 / km)

Tiomila Leg 5. map. Went out about 4:30am, it was just barely getting light. I needed the headlamp for the first half to read the map, and then not at all for the second half. I would call it a very good run, considering how often I get to do real orienteering these days. Came in high on the first one, and lost maybe 30 seconds because I couldn't remember what control flags looked like. Took the super safe route around to 2 (aka via 4) but I nailed it and it was almost definitely faster for me than going straight. No problems with 3-8. Going to 9 I went left to try to hit the big yellow swamp, which was seemed a little risky after getting thought all the green but I hit it ok, then down along the long blue swamp. Spiked 10, and by this point I had caught up to a bunch of other people on my leg. They were somewhat distracting and I made a couple little mistakes in the circle on 11-13, nothing too bad, just a few seconds here and there. Managed to get some distance on them coming down the hill out of 13 (they were old), then took the trail high to 14 and cut in after the green, but hit the control high and spend 30 seconds up on the boulders above it. One of the guys I passed caught up to me again here, and I chased him in for the last two. Overall it went much cleaner that I was expecting (probably because it was light out), and I'm really happy with it. A great weekend with CSU, totally worth the 12000 miles crammed in a plane seat.

road bike 35:00 [3] 9.5 mi (16.3 mph)

Spent the afternoon cleaning up the road bike. Eddie would have killed me if he'd seen the state of that poor thing (one of the cables was so crusty and frayed I had to cut it to get it back out of the sheath). Then took a quick ride down to the beach and back to see if everything still works. Amazingly it did, and I didn't even pop the tubes (which have been baking onto the wheels for the last year in my apt). It took a little bit to get used to it again, I've only been riding the junky mt bike for the last year (to work) and that thing is a beast. The road bike, while still pretty heavy, feels like nothing compared to it.

run 45:00 [3] 6.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

I got kicked hard in the side of my quad yesterday, and it bruised up nicely, so that wasn't too fun today. But at least it was nice and cool outside.

also I saw a big box truck (like a u-haul) come down the street and take out three driver's side mirrors in a row.

santa ynez canyon -> up to the palisades -> over to the hub -> back down the other end of the canyon. Good loop, lots of climb. Wicked hot already - the santa anas are in for a few days, so its dry and 90 (at 10am).

despite my best efforts to do nothing this week, I couldn't really sleep last night, so I figured I needed to do something.

warmup

skate ski 2:25:00 [3] 42.0 km (3:27 / km)

Mammoth Marathon.
Good race. Icy conditions for the first hour, then the sunny parts started to warm up, and by the third lap the hills were completely loose sugar snow. The race starts up a big hill right out of the line, and I took that really slow to try to avoid getting wrecked from the altitude right off the bat. It worked pretty good, so the first two loops went good. By the third the snow was getting slower and I was getting more tired, so the last two big climbs were kinda rough. Still a worthy last race of the season. Finished 20th out of 40 or 50 I think.
