Awesome afternoon Tahoe red day. Warm, but glazed and fast. This is why I live here.

In case you haven't been following along with the more important news recently, Shopping Cart Hero 5 is out, and you should all get it. I guarantee its the most fun shopping cart amusement park ride jumping game you've ever played. The sweet trailer and the game: ios and android.

Normally I would gloat about how awesome this was, but at this point that just seems cruel to the rest of the country. So it was, um, nice.

Had all day to kill before flying home, so we drove down to Eau Claire to find some snow at Tower Ridge ski trails. Greasy squishy snow, but at least there was some, and there were lots of trails. Mostly dead flat, but it would make a solid area for ski-o, even more so if you spent a couple days in the woods with a hedge trimmer. Somebody call up the eau claire ski-o club.

Birkie! Ok not really at all. But we were in WI. Race got cancelled, and they patched up a "5km" loop for everyone to fun ski on. It was crap though and it's only purpose was to keep everybody else occupied while dad and I went off to ski on all the other trails in the north end, some of which were in pretty good shape and totally empty.

Bonus afternoon loop after some soup. Started out on a wide fat bike trail, which gets a B+ ski-o grooming, but we bailed from it as soon as we hit a real ski trail.

Wandering around the north end trails with dad. Snow was dust over crust, as long as the dust was 1/2 inch and the crust was bulletproof ice.

Birkie trail south from OO. It was 99% covered, but of that it might have been 60% ice, in various varieties between bulletproof and rotten. Skiable, but not raceable.

Birkie training in Hayward with mom and dad. It was dark, but at least there was no worry about slipping on ice or snow.

You know what's great about NIS bindings? The plate is permanently attached to the skis so you don't have to worry about mounting it and there are no screws to wobble loose or anything, it's a "more efficient platform for power transfer between your boot and the ski". Ha. Challenge accepted.

Crust ski season! (crust skeason?) All around up and down the valley. Crust was pretty good, even if it was warm for the morning. At least its good until tonight, when the next AR of doom comes in. Bye bye roads and dams and slightly sloped dirt embankments.

Good race. I had better double pole skills today, though nothing really useful. The map from today. Didn't go to the fun little trail part of the terrain to the north, and too much on the golf course. I was very unimpressed with the number of doglegs on this one. 5-6-7-8? Back and forth through the same road crossing three times in a row. It seemed like more than half of the controls I was turning around after punching. Lots of people to run into out there. But still fun. Not as good as yesterday, way better than the long.

Way more fun than the long. Terrain was much flatter and more open, and had a better snow:ground ratio. Couldn't double pole very hard with the busted up ribs, so it was pretty slow, but lots of fun.

World Masters long course.

Well this wasn't very much fun. There's not a lot of snow in the woods, a couple inches, and the sticks and logs and roots and rocks are definitely taller than that. Everything in the woods was dirty and crazy with pine roots and branches and little stumps, some of which I assume are still embedded in my skis.

Bailed hard on some gravel about 200m out of the start. Fell straight forward on my chest onto the icy gravelly trail, broke a map holder strap (but nothing else!), bruised up my ribs and knees and sensitive boy parts. In proper Finnish fashion, as I'm lying on the ground rolling around and moaning a little, the other 10 people from my start wave ski by and don't even look at me.

But after that everything went fine-ish. I was wimping down some of the hairy stuff in the woods for fear of breaking more things, and was wimping up some of the double poles because of the sore ribs. There really weren't that many trails on the map, so navigation was easy, it was just the not dying part that made it tough.

Sigh. I was all psyched up because I had heard fabulous things about finnish ski-o, and this was just disappointing. The conditions were crap which they obviously can't control, but I don't think they handled it very well. The next couple days are on different terrain, so hopefully it'll be better.

Two laps around the island. Skied the second lap with a Finnish woman who came by with the usual 'USA?' introduction. Talked about the best trails of Imatra, the weather in Finland, the weather in Truckee, global warming, forest fires, and her trip to Death Valley and Vegas. Basically the usual 'I met an american' conversation.

Ski around the lake right by our place here, two laps with Anna and one lap with Dad. Not really warm out (maybe low teens?), but certainly comfortable while skiing.

EOC sprint this morning (-20C for the start). I was signed up to race, but yesterday the organizers decided that it actually wasn't allowed, and that racing both EOC and masters would dq me from masters. We'll just ignore the part where it would have been nice to tell us this back in November when we all registered for both and bought tickets for the week. So Anna and I dropped out of EOCs and are just doing masters this weekend, and Adrian and Stina dropped out of masters and are doing all EOCs.

Possibly the least exciting model event ever. The control was there at least, but didn't have an emit on it. But there were some more trails past it that were ungroomed but skiableish that we went to play on for a bit. There's about two inches of hard packed snow, so no rocks, but everything is bumpy and rutted, and the black trails are only boot wide. Seems like it'll be fairly treacherous at any sort of speed.

Was going to ski-o today, but it was too nice at TD yesterday so I had to come back. Gotta get in my sunshine and nicely groomed trails before Finland. Plus they groomed Crabtree for the first time in like 80 years, so everybody was up there.
