Orienteering race (Oceania Long) 1:16:34 [5] **** 6.53 km (11:44 / km) +274m 9:42 / km

"Iconic" Kangaroo Crossing and a really physical challenge today in tough terrain and warm conditions. 3 minute errors in the green at 2 (low) and 3 (high) put me behind from the start then a poor route choice with too much climb - changed my mind mid-leg which wasn't clever - and steep descent on the long leg to 4. After that, a wobble at 6 but finished the course pretty well and happy with 10th place (22 minutes behind 1st but only 7 behind 2nd!)

Wasn't at all happy with water on course locations (tracks) as they tendered to dictate route choice, which I feel is wrong! My only water at a control was at 12 (of 15) 500m from the finish!

Despite the hype, I don't think I'll hurry back to this map.

Post Aust Schools Long at Connorton. Actually only spent about 40 minutes and 1 km doing this but, as the Garmin track shows, I forgot to stop my watch!! As Controller, it was an eventful day at times but it all worked out in the end. The major issue, apart from a couple of non-missing (aka didn't start!) runners, was the temperature as it hit 30C quite early in the day. This had an impact particularly on the some of our NZ visitors, with a couple of schools and JIT runners suffering heat-related issues - and it's going to be hotter tomorrow for the Relays. Oh and the Oceania IOF Event Adviser suffered a dislocated finger - not heat related! Feedback on Phil's courses and the terrain was all good:-)

Back at Split Rock for the Relays. 1st leg in an M55A team with Simon and Glenn. A very good run spoilt by indecision on 10 when I stopped short and went back, losing at least 2 minutes. Lost a little bit of time earlier when I decided my route choice from 6 to 7 just had to be across the iconic (well at least for Waggaroos!) Acre Rock from the old Gardiner's Lookout map. Got back in 5th position, a place my team mates maintained to the end, so very happy.

Orienteering race (Australian Long Champs) 1:01:18 [5] **** 6.52 km (9:24 / km) +218m 8:03 / km
ahr:143 max:162 spiked:14/14c shoes: Mizuno Wave Diachi

Aust Long at Winona - the eastern part of the iconic Gardiner's Lookout map now remapped and extended south as Split Rock. A super area with massive granite boulders and expanses of bare rock.

Easily the best run I've had in a couple of years, especially at this level, with a dead heat for 6th. No errors of any significance, just not fit enough to compete at the pointy end. Achilles held up well but will see how it goes 3 days straight in the Relays (again at Split Rock) tomorrow.
