Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

Deb and I went out to have our first look at Scottish Orienteering terrain on the training map at Sutherland's Grove. Quite an eye opener and glad we went out. Bracken and heather make reading the ground shape very difficult in areas and the understory in the forests was generally very soft or marshy. Rock features also tended to be covered in moss or lichen, mapping them difficult to distinguish from any distance.

(rest day)

Walked about 9.5km along Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. Drove to Housesteads Roman Fort and walked west to Milecastle. Great scenery and cool temps made it a really pleasant walk. Took us about 3 hours with lots of ups and downs and photo stops! Then walked about 500m to the Milecastle Inn and had a refreshing ale before catching a local bus back to where the car was parked.

Morning run in Prestwick. What a difference a day makes! Cold and very windy after overnight rain. Glad I played golf yesterday.

Ran along the beach front and then thru St Nicholas golf course and back out to the beach. Turned around and back into the wind to the start and then a loop thru Prestwick golf course back to the hotel.

All the golf courses over here are public land so access is no issue but they all have signs up warning that golf is a dangerous game!!

Note

Played golf at Prestwick golf course today. Prestwick is the original home of the (British) Open Championship and it was played there for 24 years but not since. Glorious weather, sunny and no wind. Golf was very poor for the first few holes but came good for the last 12 holes including 5 pars. Fantastic experience!

Note

Long days travel from Riga in Latvia to Prestwick in Scotland. Flight was late out of Riga and left us only 20 minutes to make the connection in Copenhagen but no dramas. Picked up hire car at Glasgow airport and drove down to Prestwick where I am playing golf tomorrow.

Running 31:30 [3] 6.0 km (5:15 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 12

Morning run before heading to the airport to fly to Scotland. A shorter run today to make sure we leave plenty of time. Very nice running conditions again this morning although a little humid. Just a city parks loop again although today I climbed the "hill" (maybe 15m above general park level) twice and I didn't fall in any holes! Deb did a shorter run and her knee was so so again. Hopefully it will be OK for the 6 Days.

Day trip to Sigulda and Turaida, castle towns about 75 minutes by train from Riga. Lots of walking as Turaida is 3km from the train station in Sigulda!

Note

2 1/2 hour cycle tour of the alternate Riga. We started in the old city but quickly moved out to the "Moscow" district, so called because it lies on the old Moscow Road. Finished in the Art Nouveau part of the town that was built by wealthy Germans at around the start of the 20th Century. Saw the Jewish war memorial, commemorating the mass murder of 24000 Jews by 12 German Officers over 2 days!!, and the Russian Orthodox Church of the Decapitation of John the Baptist!! Oh and we got sworn at in Russian....

Morning run in Riga. Nice cool morning after some overnight rain. Riga is really flat, a bit like Warsaw in that regard and also has some nice parks to run in although the ones near us are smaller than we thought (no scale on the map) so had to do a few loops and crossovers to get the distance and time. OK run with no issues apart from stepping into a hole about halfway round but no damage done.
