Orienteering race (Australian Long Champs) 1:12:49 [5] **** 7.5 km (9:43 / km) +285m 8:10 / km
spiked:14/17c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

Another average effort after a good start. Very happy with pace and navigation through to 10 with only a slight hesitation inside the circle at 8. Speed was helped by running with Andrew McComb for lots of these early legs. Examination of the splits shows I was in 2nd or 3rd place for much of this part of the course.... but it didn't last!

Poor route choice at 11 going left and through the green, then contoured round the big hill but over compensated and missed the control well to the right, loosing at least 2 minutes. Compounded this by starting to run across the slope from 11 to 13, realising about half way that I hadn't done 12. Dropped down the hill onto a water trough that should have made the control a snack but I didn't read the map well and ended up missing the control to the left and had to come back and relocate off the same water trough. Got it easily enough the 2nd time but lost more than 7 minutes!

The remainder were ok, with Briohny helping to keep me going up the big hill on a common leg 13 to 14. Finished hard over the last couple so fitness was not an issue but nav certainly was. Garmin distance was 9.1km.

Running 35:40 [3] 6.7 km (5:19 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11 2nd pair

Morning run in Tanunda to get the legs moving ahead of the Sprint later to today. Went a bit further than originally planned but good to have a run.

12 PM

Orienteering race (Australian Sprint Champs) 15:01 [5] *** 2.6 km (5:47 / km)
spiked:17/18c shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11 2nd pair

A good run but a little disappointed that I still don't run these races well. Basically no nav errors and whilst I pushed hard in the latter part, I think I was too conservative in the first half, supposedly saving energy for later. The course was only 2.6km (3.0 by Garmin) so I should be able to run hard the whole way.

Afternoon run in Albury after meetings all day. Very sluggish to start but picked after a while.

Struggled through a morning run. Just couldn't get going today and felt very tired. Perhaps one too many glasses of red last night? or maybe it was the curry we had after watching the AFL grand final anti-climax!
