Orienteering race (State League 11) 1:20:06 [5] *** 7.0 km (11:27 / km) +185m 10:06 / km
spiked:17/21c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

State League at Belanglo. Brilliant late winter day, not at all cold and no wind. Fairly pleased with the fitness levels, although still struggling up the hills with the hammy.

Reasonable run, given I haven't really orienteered competitively since QBIII. Missed 3 controls (2, 5 and 16) by more than 2 minutes each plus a few smaller errors. At 2, I missed it left on a shortish leg with no real attackpoint; 5 was just simply not reading the map as I didn't see a second watercourse; 16 I stopped short in an area with a lot of rock, some of which didn't seem to be on the map. 2nd place but a distant 9 minutes behind O-ing! On the splits, Darvo looked to be having a blinder but pulled out halfway round with a calf injury.

Exercise bike 38:25 [3] 7.4 km (5:11 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Afternoon run. Needed a hit out after 2 days of meetings and sitting in the car driving: Wagga-West Wyalong-Lake Cargelligo-Griffith-Wagga.

Added a new loop down Gregado Rd off Plumpton then into the new subdivision next to the Catholic HS which joins back onto the Lake track, then along teh lake to Norfolk and out to the drainage reserve and back home.

Exercise bike 35:00 [3]

Decided against a bike ride and opted for the exercise bike instead. After a good warm up, threw in 5 x 2 minute surges with a 2 minute rest between, then a few minutes to cool down.

Running 40:30 [3] 7.8 km (5:12 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Steady-paced afternoon lap of the Lake from home. A little bit chilly to start but I soon warmed up. Can't get over seeing the Lake so full and still overflowing!

Orienteering race (Street/Park event) 44:50 [4] 8.3 km (5:24 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Ran my Street event as unofficial (I did set the courses!) as Deb had volunteered to be time keeper:-) Really nice morning for running, cool and sunny. Got all but 2 of the 20 controls on the score event, back with 8 seconds to spare but only because of poor route choice over the last 4 or 5.

Orienteering 1:10:00 [3] **** 7.3 km (9:35 / km) +175m 8:34 / km
spiked:13/16c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

Training course out at Burngoogee with Briohny. Tried to concentrate on being really accurate with the compass and running bearings and wasn't really looking to run too hard. Happy overall with navigation with just a few little hesitations around the control sites. Garmin distance was 8.5km.

Very very wet out in the forest. Hard to believe its the same forest as the NSW Champs last year!

Orienteering (Sprint training) 20:02 [4] ** 3.3 km (6:04 / km) +50m 5:39 / km
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

A sprint course set by Briohny on Willans Hill after work. Distance is by Garmin, straight line 2.8km. First go at Orienteering in 5 weeks so concentrated on map reading and navigation. Pretty happy, just a few small errors in the bush section, hitting the track a bit early on 6 and a fence too far left on 8. Poor route choice to 14 meant climbing 2 fences!

Good fun run and a nice warm up for tomorrow when we are heading out to Burngoogee for a long training run.

Spent about an hour riding around our neighbourhood, selecting control points for this Sunday's street score event. Logged 25 minutes as that's about all I actually rode for. Rest was noting map corrections and control details.

Running 27:00 [3] 4.8 km (5:37 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Slow recovery run from home out to the Boat Club and return. Quads very tight today. So glad the Half was yesterday as there was a strong southerly wind today and it dropped the temperature by what felt like 10 degrees!

Very lucky weather-wise yesterday for the event, as it started to rain at about 2 pm and drizzled all afternoon and half the night, then another 10mm this morning. Some parts of the course near the Start/Finish that were dry yesterday were under water this afternoon!

Running race (Wagga Trail Half Marathon) 1:49:16 [5] 21.1 km (5:11 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Great conditions for running and a good course, especially as the organisers had to change so much at the last minute due to the wet weather, including moving the start-finish location by about 10 kms and altering the half and full events into out-and-back runs!

Started quite quickly (for me), keeping under 5 min kms for the first 4 kms until the hills slowed me a bit. Wasn't anywhere near as muddy as I had expected with only a small stretch before the turnaround point. Managed to work my way past quite a few other runners on the way back but almost blew it with a wrong turn at about the 15km mark. Thanks to the lady I had just passed for calling out to me:-)

Hammy started to really tighten up on the big downhill and then along the flat section back to the finish but pushed on and didn't let anyone pass me although had to really sprint the last 100m or so! More than 5 minutes quicker than last year on what was probably a physically harder course so well satisfied.

Great effort from a few well known Orienteers in the full marathon, with Grant Bluett winning at his first attempt at the distance in a time around 2:47 and Rob Walter taking 2nd place about 9 minutes back! Grant McDonald also completed his first marathon in about 3:45.

Running 23:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:45 / km)

Easy run with Briohny out to Boat club and return.
Met up with one of the Mara organizers and he explained the new route required by flooding down near the river. Means all courses now are out and back from Boat Club.

Running 52:00 [3] 9.2 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Morning run in Sydney with Briohny. Ran from our hotel in Ultimo down past Wenty Park to Blackwattle Bay and around the foreshores, then on into Lilyfield before turning back. A nice run, colder than I expected so glad I put the jacket on. Hammy felt pretty good but our pace was only steady. Great morning and lots of people out.

Note

A bad day at the office for the Hawks at the SCG v Sydney. A pretty good game (if you were a Sydney fan, which Briohny is and she was sitting next to me!). Hawks just didn't compete in the first half then came out with a roar in 3rd quarter kicking 6 goals to 3 but not enough after being 47pts down at half time. Hawks "stellar" midfielders were well held by Sydney: despite Hawks winning a lot of the hitouts, Sydney smashed us at the clearances.

Last quarter they were clearly under instructions to play on at all costs: sometimes it worked but often handed Sydney easy goals.

I blame myself really, as "Briohny forced" me to get my photo taken before the game with her and Siggy, the Swans mascot. Sure it brought Hawks bad luck!

Running 32:00 [2] 5.0 km (6:24 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Very steady and slow jog out to the Boat Club Rd and back home. Still a few spasms but not as bad as the other day. Good massage and icing afterwards. Needed to do something as off to Sydney with Deb abd Briohny tomorrow early for Swans v Hawks at SCG. Hope to get a run in on Sunday morning with Briohny.

Cycling 32:00 [3] 10.0 km (3:12 / km)

Late afternoon ride from home to the Boat Club then a full lap of the Lake and home again. Glad I had the lights as it was just dark as I got home. Hammy reasonable but didn't push hard at all.

For the first time that I can remember, the Lake is actually full and overflowing into Marshalls Creek. Would not have imaged this 6 months back, about the time of Briohny's wedding. One section of the cycle track near the 1st green on the golf course is half under water, which tells you something about the quality of Council's survey work when they built it. To be fair, I suppose the waters edge was probably 100 metres away when the track was built a couple of years ago.

Strength and conditioning 15:00 [3]

Note
(injured)

Headed out for afternoon run but only did about 10 minutes. Lots of sharp spasms in right hammy so stopped and walked back home. Very annoying, especially as I got through Sunday's long run with seemingly no ill-effects and felt good yesterday. Lots of stretching, massage and icing tonight!

Running long 1:28:40 [3] 16.0 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Morning run out along Plumpton Rd, then Boiling Down and Redbank Rds and Main St before heading north around the Lake and back home via the Boat Club.

A really nice morning for a run although the norwesterly headwind coming home was a bit unusual this time of year: normally associate that with summer! All the dodgy bits felt OK.

About 5 minutes after I got home the rain started so pretty lucky to stay dry!
