QOC: Prince William Forest, Happyland. The QOC winter meeting was again broadened to include a night-o this year. This is on top of a successful overnight camp (in heated cabins) added about 2 years back. Dasa Merka setup a short night-o training for the kids and all of them ran through that together. Peggy and I were rushed leaving home so we forgot things--sleeping bags and a headlamp for me. I went out with two $1 LED handheld flashlights. Peggy had a headlamp. Earlier in the day I took a few steps at a jog and found that I could do it without my injured calf hurting much. With that success I felt that I could try some more so I set off at a jog toward the first control. It felt good to finally be on the move again. The course wasn't that difficult but it was green. The map didn't show many areas of it. I hit all of the controls pretty well, probably since I was going slowly. My running got better as I went--I was warming up. My right heal felt awkward however--it was bruised in the Ultra-Long event that I ran last week. I passed Peggy somewhere and saw her after #7. I had to take a pit stop after then too. I caught Greg Lennon at control #11. We ran the next several legs basically in parallel. I didn't get ahead of Greg for good until climbing out of the reentrant for the Go control. My calf did hurt more on climbs and on the parts on the harder ground like the roads.

Bicycling (Commute) 7:10 [3] 1.45 mi (4:56 / mi)
slept:4.75 weight:178lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. I got Max off to school on the bus and rode in light rain at a faster pace than I had been doing. I could feel this in my calf so I took it easier on hilly parts. Some stress at work on Wednesday made for some new physical discomforts that lingered.

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Arlington Rd., then to Northfield Rd. I was supposed to work for only the morning but 4 hours after that, I was able to meet Max and ride while he walked.

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Arlington Rd., then to Northfield Rd. with Max's bicycle. It was nice to ride in the dark with my light after a stressful evening at work. It was kind of windy. My cold is getting better and I'm walking with less of a limp. It'll take some more days before I'll run again but I don't have the time for it lately anyway.

OCIN A-Meet US Ultra-Long Championships at East Fork Park, near Batavia, OH. I stuck with running the Red course despite more aching in my calf and the start of a cold. Before the race the rains were falling and I got soaked as well as cold. I knew it'd be a long day when I started off falling behind in the mass start while still on the road. The uneven terrain was hard on my calf and I had trouble reading the map with the rain. To make matters worse, I made an error going to the right on #1. The worst was going for the trail route to the right on the way to #7 but missing the trail and finding myself crossing deep reentrants and finding my way around. I lost a lot of time. I did end up running with Peter Wentzel for several legs. We weren't trying to run together initially but between my mistakes an his runnig a little slower we settled in together. We both made another mistake going to #11. It wasn't until after #17 that we split again. I ran faster then made a terrible error running up along the wrong reentrant to #18. I caught him at #19 then moved out well toward #20. I finally caught Peggy at the creek crossing before #20 and got ahead. A slight error along with Carol Cross let Peggy get ahead by a few seconds. When leaving, I jumped over the top of a reentrant. I was planning a fast escape from both Peggy and Carol but the slope and my landing did my calf in--I'd pulled something and was left limping the rest of the way instead of just moving in restricted movement. Carol and Peggy beat me in. It wasn't until the next day at home when Peggy told me enough people had dropped out or didn't start that I got second in M45+. I was a full hour behind first and really orienteered poorly this day. I ran over 13.1 miles.
