Ian Hodgson relay leg 4 with Nails (the race was run clockwise from Patterdale this year). Set off in 2nd with Borrowdale already well out of reach, but Calder Valley (Karl Grey and Ben Mounsey) not too far behind. We went hard along the track but once we hit the steep climb the distance back looked worryingly small, maybe 30 secs. We worked hard on the climb with Nails blowing a gasket to keep pushing on and managed to keep a gap to the summit of Hart Crag. They eventually passed us on the technical descent of Fairfield, which they threw themselves down - Ben nearly took me out on a slide down some wet slabs. We pushed hard again up St Sunday Crag and closed the gap, but they were well away again on the descent - Nails' crocked ankle was not helping matters and he coloured the air blue all the way back to Patterdale. 3rd overall, an improvement on the disappointing results of the past 2 years, but we can win this! Next time. Beautiful day out on the hills though. Forgot to warm down so I stopped at Kirkstone for a short jog in the sun before the drive home.
Note
Shocked to hear that a V40 died of a heart attack on this leg later in the day, tragic news and puts it all into perspective.

Bad night again last night, so abandoned plans to head to the Lakes. Went for a walk around Damflask instead and soaked up some autumn rays. Made it out for a short, groggy jog later on, which helped to revive me after a day of lethargy.

Drove over to the Lakes after Alex's bed time and squeezed in some circuits and stretching before bed.

3 Reservoirs run, trying to cruise in an efficient manner rather than jog. Felt better as the run went on with a fade in the last 15 mins. Cold and gusty day for it and very wet underfoot, but an enjoyable route so I couldn't complain.
Early start out to Stanton for some map updating. Did some survey and had a run around the area, out for a couple of hours total.

Hallamshire session of Tricketts hills. Only 5 reps of the full hill, which I figured would be easy.
no. 1: 1.02 - no sweat, I'm going to do 6 reps. At least.
no. 2: 1.00 - even better, bring it on.
no. 3: 1.02 - hmmm, maybe I will stick at 5 after all.
no. 4: 1.04 - I may have over-egged the pudding.
no. 5: 1.09 - boom.
Cruise home with Pete and Jon.
Down Rivelin run, an improvement on recent times of 14.15. Felt pretty good, only really suffered for the last couple of minutes, stumbled home after. Progress.

IW via Rivelin, Lodge Moor, BHP. Heavy heavy bag and no wonder - I arrived at work to find that I had carried some heavy bags of seeds and nuts back into work after carting them home yesterday. Oh and I had 2 towels, 2 pairs of socks, a book I didn't need and no underwear. Genius. Felt pretty good considering.

Direct route HFW with a set of hill bounds thrown in to make the process of getting soaked in the rain more worthwhile.
