Note
(sick) (rest day)

Properly ill today. Maybe yesterday wasn't such a great idea. Also, can't walk or wear shoes (or socks) because of my blisters. Also got really bad DOMS, including in my arms?

Running 1:17:29 intensity: (37:29 @2) + (40:00 @4) 13.24 km (5:51 / km) +864m 4:25 / km

Win Lose Win. Probably ill advised considering the volume of snot that is constantly dribbling out of my face, but I needed some hills before next weekend and we're off to York tomorrow. Actually felt OK although wearier than normal on the climbs, so focused on running the downhills as hard as possible. Wore a new pair of xtalons and my big toes started blistering pretty early on, which took my mind of everything else, seriously hobbling by the end and had to jog a barefoot warmdown with enormous chunks of flesh hanging off the sides of my feet. Odd, I almost never get blisters.

Note

Lately, I have been questioning the nature of reality. I had a job interview last week for a promotion I really wanted and it didn’t go my way. Cue black feelings of anger, frustration, disappointment and self-doubt. I dreaded going in to work on Monday. All pretty standard responses, I guess. If ‘reality’ for me means work, that is. At a talk I did this week at my local orienteering club’s junior training evening I got asked how I had managed to balance training with work as a runner. My answer was that running was the thing that had always given me balance. Without it, how would work (and life itself) even be possible?

I dealt with the interview frustration by going running, obviously. But how does that help? Surely it is just escapism, plain and simple? A case of running away from my problems.

For me, it has more to do with what is really real. Work is a socially constructed environment with its own set of conventions and expectations (like progression, for example). Running is a way back to authentic experience, my route out of the matrix. It gives me the perspective to see work for the superficial reality that it really is. All problems look trivial from the viewpoint at the top of Parkwood Springs.

I can think of a few other folk who could do with escaping from the matrix. The whole of Parliament, for example. How can anyone's hope to solve a problem like Brexit without going for a run? Preferably together. And up on Kinder. Come on MPs, take the red pill and get some perspective, I recommend it.

Take the red pill

Orienteering race 57:45 [5] 11.64 km (4:58 / km) +63m 4:50 / km

CSC Qual at Sherwood Pines. Not my favourite area, but Rich had planned a nice twisty course that kept us in the terrain with plenty of options to run straight. I ran pretty hard to see what I had in the tank - felt pretty good all told, although faded a bit towards the end and started losing a few bits of time as the concentration slipped. Comfortable win for SYO, but then we did have well over 100 from the club running, new members and old. Nice sunny day for playing in the playground too!

More hanging with Jenny. Arrived at 6.30 to a covering of snow and a magical winter wonderland. Was hoping that it would stay for the starters, but sadly it quickly turned to slush and melted. I was expecting this to be a chore, but I just love spending quality time in Wharncliffe. Thoroughly enjoyed myself in spite of the freezing cold feet and hands.

Bit shocked that the day after a vandalism-free event in Upperthorpe a control got nicked (including sawing through a gripple) at 7.15am in the middle of the forest, but at least it was found and replaced in good time - I added on a final run around the white controls to double-check that they were still there. R ITB grumbling by the end of that.
2 PM

Running 1:10:00 [2] 8.04 km (8:43 / km) +195m 7:46 / km

Interesting weather conditions all day made this a proper challenge for the SYO machine as well as for the competitors. Both seemed to cope fine and I was impressed by people's ability to deal with the rocky slopes to run faster times than I had anticipated. Seems like most folk enjoyed the technical challenge in any case. I spent much of the day hanging to the leg of the download tent trying to stop it blowing away, which meant that I was a little bit tired for collecting. But still couldn't help enjoying being in the woods. Did I mention that I love Wharncliffe?
