TAR day 3. St Anton to Landeck. First marathon of the week and longer than advertised, which was a bit upsetting. We decided on a steady tactic today and took it nice and easy on the first climb. Lots of nice single trail in lovely upland forests and meadows in the first half, followed by a less inspiring finish with a 1200m descent on forest roads and asphalt and an undulating 5km along the river into Landeck. We suffered on the descent with sore feet and quads, then Rhys picked it up at the end while I hung on for dear life. To be fair, he did have the decency to be almost incoherent at the finish though. Hot again, enjoying it (sort of) while it lasts before the weather breaks tomo evening. It's getting very hard. Most things hurt and I was bleeding from my crotch and little toe today. Tomorrow is even longer and harder. Lovely.

TAR day 2, Lech to St Anton, all in Austria today. I felt somewhat frazzled this morning and the vertical km straight out of town was a bit of a shock. Rhys set a good pace up there and we were well in the mix, only the leaders getting a bit of a gap. I felt a bit short of breath at the top (around 2500) which was a bit worrying as most of the day was high. But that eased off on a long undulating traverse of some upland meadows and passes. Perked up a bit for the final steep climb of the day, from where it was a fairly grim 1200m descent to the finish. Hard to know what to do here with the rest of the week in mind, so we took it steady and let a team past to finish 6th overall, 4th open for the day. This was the short day. Realisation has dawned that this is going to be a very hard week indeed. Both still smiling though!

Transalpine day 1. Oberstdorf to Lech. Later start than normal for the week and a right scorcher, so this was mainly a drinking and staying cool competition. Rhys managed the staying cool by wearing some smart shades and cap. Looked like he was on his way to the beach. Anyway, there was a bit of a preamble out of town before a big Beastie of a 1600m climb that just kept on giving. We kept the pace sensible to avoid overheating and had no idea how many teams were in front, but a steady stream kept coming back to us which we took as a good sign. Some lovely high stuff was followed by a long run down a roasting hot valley to Lech, which was a comedy slow motion run with a few other teams. Ended up a surprising 5th overall, which put us third open as there were a couple of vets teams ahead. Satisfied and not too battered, but not reading too much into today. The trail ahead is long and somewhat bumpy.

Train to Oberstdorf and hang out at the race HQ. Lovely day, all very relaxing and body feeling good. How strange to think that in a few days time I will be smashed to pieces. Briefing, pasta party and ice cream. First insight into the madness that is to come...

Travel out to Munich. Nice afternoon of chilling out in the city and a pint or two in a beer garden. Both feeling good, nervous, niggly, antsy and raring to get going. Met Jasmin and Konrad for a late second tea at Konrad's aunt's place.

Cycled IW and work to nursery. Kindly, Alex walked home from nursery to spare me further discomfort. Felt awkward on the bike, but I think it hasn't aggrevated too much. Lots of stretching and icing today, seems to be helping.

Pretty sure it is an inflamed bursa, which must have come on after too much kneeling Thurs evening, maybe not helped by my cold virus? Pretty certain it is superficial, anyway, but still struggling with stairs and generally tender when walking. This is proving to be the mother of all tapers.

Run from Clun with Gareth, Duncan and Brooner up to a hill fort and back through some nice rolling hills. Lovely part of the world. Cold felt almost better and knee was OK. But...deteriorated through the day to the point where I couldn't walk without a limp by the evening. All in my head according to Mr Baker, hope he's right!

Great afternoon at Ben and Franchi's wedding!

Couldn't miss the chance to run the WOC Middle distance when it's right next to where we're staying. Had fantasies of nailing some fast splits, but they were out of the window right from the start. Some tricky legs, I can see why a few folk had trouble. I stopped after the controls in the open mingy stuff and ran home. Worth the effort.

S6D day 6, Affric North. Tired today, but well up for possibly the best terrain in the country. Started with purpose and didn't miss a trick, but Jonny caught me on the way to 4, speedy young whippersnapper that he is. Soon enough we had reeled in Rich and then caught a much bigger pack at 6. They all fanned out on the leg to 8 and it looked as though the race was on!

Except, twang! Bugger, right knee jarred and it felt bad. Hobbled for a bit but had to stop and watch the pack stream past. I set off to walk home, but it started to ease, so I tried a jog. Oh, when else am I going to get a chance to run in Glen Affric? Decided to soldier on tentatively so took it easy through to 9, now last man in the forest. Caught a glimpse of Craney in the distance here so put a bit more effort in to try to catch him. But sadly, Craney is not so easily caught. I was on my own through the wilderness area to the W, enjoying the spectacular views and the odd bilberry.

Eventually saw Craney again on the long leg to 19 and snuck past him in the forest without realising. The last section was great fun weaving through the knolls. Really glad to have the chance to run on this area and glad to get around knee intact. Bit stiff once I had finished...need to keep an eye on that.

Scottish 6 Day day 5, Glen Affric. Debacle. Er, a bit over planned, like dur. Got pretty annoyed with the terrain early in the course when I chose a perfectly reasonable route (high to 4) only to find myself wallowing in waist deep bilberry, fallen trees and young trees. It went downhill from there (sadly not literally). One control was surrounded 360 degrees by acres of unmapped wind blow (I missed the warning on a map in the start lane) with no obvious way to get to it. Brilliant. Sadly I dealt with the challenge far worse than almost everyone else and made several big mistakes, so game over for the week.

Running 20:00 [2]

Bit late for my start, so in a hurry. Back from the finish to the arena and car.

S6D day 4, Darnaway. Much better course today, really made the best of the area. Blew no. 1 but ran OK after that, pushing quite hard towards the end (I knew what time the others had run). 51 was an impressive time, no way I could have got close to that, but pleased to claw back a few mins on most of the other Brits.

S6d day 4 Darnaway. So excited about running on the WOC Middle area, but was very disappointed by this event. First of all, we didn't even make it into the best bits of the terrain; secondly, the course was just so poor. Controls in tricky areas were on simple features, mostly on line features, and instead of going into the good stuff we had a dull 2km blast around a flat area with a crap out of date map. Just a waste of time, should have gone and run the middle course instead.

Scottish 6 Days day 2, Strathfarrar. Should have stayed in bed this morning. Except that Alex woke at 5.30am, so that wasn't really an option. OK so I had a late start on this tough wee beastie, which was good. Less good was the 1.15 hr traffic jam to the event and the 30min queue at the start to get a punching start. Not very up for it after all that, but hacked my way round, mainly following paths and occasionally straying off line into the rougher stuff. Lost a lot of time in the middle and was 28th at no. 9. Stern words with myself and worked hard from there to the finish.

Scottish 6 days day 1. I'll admit it; I would have been reasonably happy with my run if I hadn't been beaten by Craney. At least I was ahead of Rhesus. Great area and a nice varied course, although the heathery long legs were a bit of a chore. Not too bad considering the early start and everything still to play for.

Exciting watching Kris smash it in the evening.
