Monday Feb 28, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Steady IW.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

5 PM

Running 1:00:00 [2] 14.0 km (4:17 / km)

Brisk HFW via Fulwood, Lodge Moor, Crosspool. Felt stiff legged and a bit unco, but covered the distance quickly enough so it can't have been all bad. Had a bunch of chavs for company for 100m-or-so, which they found hilarious; me, less so. There must be a better collective noun for chavs...perhaps an off-license of chavs, a hoodie of chavs, or an asbo of chavs? These thoughts kept me occupied for much of the run.

Orienteering race 52:30 [4] 10.0 km (5:15 / km)

Change of plans this morning so headed out to the EBOR local event at Skipwith Common, a great little area which I have never run on. Dead flat with a mix of runnable forest, semi open and open with lots of marshes, just like Strensall, but it was very wet today, so not easy to see any difference between marsh and non-marsh.

http://www.ebor.routegadget.co.uk/cgi-bin/reitti.c...

Felt very tired after yesterday and a very late night and struggled to concentrate, so just ran on my compass most of the time. I made one big mistake where my mind wandered half way along a leg and I had no idea at all where I was - I couldn't even remember what I had run past, or where I had been. Not so easy as I remember it, this orienteering lark.

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Jogging about. Feeling a lot better, but still coughing and sniffling a lot. No ill effects from the run though.

Saturday Feb 26, 2011 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Still under the weather and had lots of last minute organising to do for the film event. Had a long and tiring, but very enjoyable day at the cinema.

Friday Feb 25, 2011 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Bit better today, visited Park Hill flats to hear a presentation on the redevelopment, then worked till late sorting stuff out for tomorrow.

Thursday Feb 24, 2011 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Feel pretty rough today - throat feels bad and head full of gunk. No chance of training.

Wednesday Feb 23, 2011 #

10 AM

Running 1:20:00 intensity: (50:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) 17.0 km (4:42 / km)
(sick)

Spoon lane run with a sore throat. Not feeling any worse after yesterday so decided to get out again. Took it fairly easy and seems to have perked me up a bit...

Running 2:00:00 intensity: (1:10:00 @2) + (50:00 @3) 26.0 km (4:37 / km)

I needed some purpose this morning so I headed up Rivelin on a convoluted sort of route to track down Neil and Pete's roving box. I located it successfully after groping around in the wrong dung-filled nook for a bit. I have to say, I am impressed by the effort you guys have gone to, I'm glad I finally got round to hunting it down.

Monday Feb 21, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)
(rest day)

IW with my pack the heaviest I can remember. Busy day at work today so no chance for more training. Rest day it is.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Sunday Feb 20, 2011 #

9 AM

Running 2:35:00 [2] 32.0 km (4:51 / km)

Cruisy run with Rob and Mike, who zipped up his man suit to join us. Out to Wharncliffe staying on the flatter trails, then back via Beeley and headed up Rivelin with Rob for a bonus few kms at the end. I felt for Rob as he carried on up the valley on his own after I left him. The pace increased a bit on two occasions: first when we ran past some crazy looking extra from the Deer Hunter in combat fatigues with a rifle, second when Rob got himself tangled in a wire dog lead and had an altercation with the owner. Felt pretty comfortable today, making the most of the fatigue lag after yesterday.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Saturday Feb 19, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 25:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

Easy jog to Hillsborough Park with Jen. In the SNOW!
3 PM

Running race 1:11:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (41:00 @5) 16.0 km (4:26 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons 190

National XC champs at Alton Towers. This wasn't supposed to be my first xc race of the year, but that's how it worked out. I enjoyed it much more than I had expected to, possibly because I got a poor start (boxed in on the first bends) and then spent the whole race passing people wallowing in the deep mud. It was seriously hard work in places and there was hardly a moment where you didn't have to concentrate on placing your feet, which was great. Managed a significantly stronger finish than I did on this course 3 years ago, finished 137, nothing special results-wise, which was as expected.

On account of the muddy conditions, the schedule went to pieces and the race organisers deemed the 12km course too dangerous. Rumours circulated about a revised start time and course for ages before it was made clear by the announcers, who eventually knocked 2km off the distance to make it 'safer'. My meticulous preparation was shot to pieces.

Friday Feb 18, 2011 #

12 PM

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

IW trying to feel bouncy.

Running Drills 15:00 [3] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Decent session of drills and sprints, feeling perkier by the end.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Thursday Feb 17, 2011 #

11 AM

Running 1:05:03 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (45:00 @3) + (5:03 @5) 14.0 km (4:39 / km)

IW up Rivelin inc an effort up Coppice Track with a heavyish pack. Felt reasonably good today after a relatively easier day.
8 PM

Running 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

HFW after a research seminar. Felt almost effortless and I didn't want to stop. What's the betting that I don't feel that way on Saturday?

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Wednesday Feb 16, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 45:00 [2] 9.0 km (5:00 / km)

Steady up Loxley ahead of a busy morning. Feeling comfortable after last night, I think my body may be getting used to the track again.
5 PM

Climbing 50:00 [1]

Good session at the works with Jen and Phil. Nailed most of the new yellow circuit.

Tuesday Feb 15, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

IW, tired legs.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

6 PM

Track session 28:00 [5] 7.5 km (3:44 / km)

Hallamshire session, bit shorter this week because of the nationals, which meant that the pain was condensed into a shorter time. 6x (600, jog 100, 400, jog 200). 1.53, 76, 1.53, 76, 1.53, 76, 1.56, 74, 1.56, 76, 1.56, 73. Didn't hang around on the recovery so the effort built up, good session as usual.

Running 50:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:00 / km)

From work with Paul and home with Mike, Pete and Rob. Nice to have company all the way, felt sorry leaving Rob to do the last bit on his own.

Running Drills 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

At the track to warm up.

Monday Feb 14, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

IW. Tired and heavy legs this morning, so took the shorter route into work. Bumped into Hatti doing drills in Weston Park.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

4 PM

Running 1:00:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:17 / km)

HFW on the usual Fulwood, Lodge Moor, Crosspool loop. Ran fast as time was short and covered the distance pretty quickly, felt alright for a Monday afternoon.

Sunday Feb 13, 2011 #

10 AM

Orienteering 1:00:00 intensity: (20:00 @3) + (40:00 @4) 9.0 km (6:40 / km)

Tour de Burbage with Jen, Riina, Sammi and Jaimie. Not the nicest day for it, but a nice mix of tourism and technical training, including 3x short courses in Surprise View, Burbage Valley and the boulders.

Running 45:00 [2] 6.0 km (7:30 / km)

The in-between bits.
4 PM

Running 42:00 [3] 9.0 km (4:40 / km)

Usual Loxley route in the rain and mud. Legs felt good, but head was a bit tired.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Exercises.

Saturday Feb 12, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 1:06:51 intensity: (50:00 @2) + (16:51 @5) 15.0 km (4:27 / km)

Had another crack at the Parkrun. I struggled to make it out of bed for this after a night out at the Fat Cat. I abandoned plans of a pre-run breakfast when I woke up with a headache at 7.15 and slept in until the last possible moment. Felt a bit better by the time I had run down to Endcliffe and the race itself felt alright, although I wasn't going particularly fast. Got in a tussle with a Darlington runner, who came sprinting past me with about 500m to go and then turned prematurely into the finish, leaving me to come in first. I suspect he would have beaten me otherwise.
4 PM

Running 47:00 [2] 9.0 km (5:13 / km)

Evening jog up Rivelin back through Bolehill Park with Riina, showing her some of the local haunts.

Friday Feb 11, 2011 #

Running 45:00 [2] 9.0 km (5:00 / km)
(rest day)

Finally gave in to the tiredness today and settled on an easy run up Loxley. My hip and back felt very awkward today, so never felt entirely coordinated.
4 PM

Running Drills 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Drills at Myers Grove - felt a bit looser and better after this.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Thursday Feb 10, 2011 #

9 AM

Running 1:05:07 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (40:00 @3) + (5:07 @5) 14.0 km (4:39 / km)

IW up Rivelin with an effort up the Coppice track to make an otherwise meaningless run marginally more purposeful. My legs weren't pleased to be running today, but I didn't give them any choice.
3 PM

Running 58:00 [2] 12.0 km (4:50 / km)

Easy jog from work down to Foot Heaven (I was late), then a run home after having my back well and truly loosened off by Kim. Now I just need to find a way to stop my chronic big knotted lump from coming back...

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Wednesday Feb 9, 2011 #

10 AM

Running 1:18:00 intensity: (40:00 @2) + (38:00 @3) 17.0 km (4:35 / km)

Loxley Common, fisheries, Spoon Lane loop. Felt drained for the first 15 or so, but gradually better as the run went on. Calves a bit sore, but other than that no ill effects from last night.
9 PM

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Tuesday Feb 8, 2011 #

9 AM

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Easy IW. The sun was shining and was actually giving off some faint warmth. All was right with the world.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Same old.
6 PM

Track session 35:00 [5] 9.0 km (3:53 / km)

Hallamshire session, 6x1500 off 5.50. The reps seemed interminably long, the rests seemed unbelievably short, and there were quite a few points at which I resolved to run less than 6 of them. Ground it out though, helped along by a nice compact pack composed of PaulF, Mike and Dave S for the later reps. 4.54, 4.55, 4.53, 4.57, 4.55, 4.54. Great session!

Running 50:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:00 / km)

To track with Paul and home with Pete, whose company was much appreciated. Sore and spacey by the time I made it back.

Running Drills 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Drills session to warm up.

Monday Feb 7, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 50:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:00 / km)

Up Rivelin, Den Bank, Crosspool. Legs were heavy, but the throat felt a bit better - other than that no ill effects.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Usual exercises.
5 PM

Running 1:03:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:30 / km)

NBR HFW. Tired for the first half hour and felt good for the rest of the way, possibly coinciding with reaching the top of the hill. Wet and miserable and I almost forgot to enjoy myself.

Sunday Feb 6, 2011 #

1 PM

Running 50:00 [3] 11.0 km (4:33 / km)

Woke up to a return of the sore throat and decided against Brimham Rocks. I felt pretty good and couldn't just hang around all day, so I went out for a tester sort of run up to Loxley.

This thing has been hanging around for weeks now, and nothing seems to make any difference to it - resting, training, racing. It seems to be an isolated symptom without any associated effect on heartrate, etc. This time I'm just going to pretend it's not there and see what happens...anyway the run felt just fine, let's see what tomorrow brings.

Running Drills 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Set of drills on the old playing field at Loxley to make the session a bit more worthwhile.
9 PM

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Core and back exercises - everything felt stiff.

Saturday Feb 5, 2011 #

8 AM

Running 2:35:00 [2] 29.0 km (5:21 / km)

Had to drop Jen in Grindleford at 8, so went for a run from the cafe. Rob kindly came along and kept me company on a wet and miserable morning. The run was actually quite enjoyable - a lap of Burbage followed by White Edge, Birchin Edge, Froggatt Edge at a relaxed pace. My legs felt better by the end than they did when I got out of bed this morning. Full veggie breakfast in front of the fire at Grindleford Cafe followed by coffee and cookies back at Gareth's hit the spot.

Friday Feb 4, 2011 #

7 AM

Running 40:00 [2] 8.0 km (5:00 / km)

Wet and wild today, with OMM like conditions in Bolehill Park. Another early one and felt all virtuous again.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Back and glut exercises once I got to work.
5 PM

Running 1:00:00 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (40:00 @4) 14.0 km (4:17 / km)

Ground out 10x3/1 HFW on the same route as Tuesday. Strong headwind on the way out to Lodge moor and felt like hard work all the way. Tired legs and body today.

Thursday Feb 3, 2011 #

11 AM

Orienteering 1:25:00 [4] 15.0 km (5:40 / km)

Testing a draft of the BOC course on Wharncliffe. Very fast terrain at the moment, I wonder how much difference a bit of leaf cover will make?

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Warm up and warm down.
9 PM

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Stuck on some Led Zeppelin and did a good session of exercises and stretching. I needed it.

Wednesday Feb 2, 2011 #

7 AM

Running 40:00 [2] 8.0 km (5:00 / km)

IW via crosspool. OK, so it was nearer 8 by the time I left the house, but it still said 7 on my watch, so I felt very dedicated. Not as dead as I thought I might be this morning.
5 PM

Running 20:00 [2] 4.0 km (5:00 / km)

From work to the works.

Climbing 45:00 [1]

Climbing session with Jen and Candyman. Tried all manner of different colours, including a new purple circuit, which I mostly failed to complete.

Tuesday Feb 1, 2011 #

9 AM

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

IW, feeling reasonably good.

Circuits 10:00 [1]

Usual set of exercises when I got to work.
6 PM

Track session 45:00 [5] 9.0 km (5:00 / km)

So I went to track. It's been a while since I've mede it down, but not much had changed. Except the sessions seem to have got longer and tougher. Ran 15x600 off 3 mins and actually quite enjoyed it, although it seemed to go on for a really long time. Only the sight of Mike's and Paul's lycra-clad behinds kept me going. Ran them all between 1.51-1.57, which felt like a reasonable pace, and by the end there was only the elite group of myself, Mike, Paul and Jon left. Hardcore.

Running 50:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:00 / km)

From work to track with Paul, who helped me not to bottle it on the way there. Home on my own, which was a struggle. White lights in my eyes and dizzyness by the time I got to Langsett Rd. Oh, how I have missed this feeling.

Running Drills 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Good set of drills and strides to warm up.
