Night Orienteering race 2:10:00 [5] 18.0 km (7:13 / km)
Jukola Leg 3. 14.5km. 1.40.
Must admit I was pretty nervous when I had been put on the long night leg but I knew it would be an awesome experience. Ian and Jim led out well but knew I would hopefully be able to make up a few places during the race.
Quickly realised what Ian and Olle were talking about how frustrating it can be trying to get passed people but still managed to go through a fair few having decent pace to the first one. Nailed the control in a bit of a tricky bit too which was a huge confidence boost first up for the rest of the race. Continued well and was still going past quite a few people until at least halfway round. Made a few small mistakes around this point, particularly in the really tricky section with a lot of controls so that was a little disappointing but I dont think I was the only one because I started notice a few guys who I had been around for quite a while. Felt like I had been pulling people through with me for most of the time so it was alright to have a few around to pace and not have to try and get passed them all the time. Lost of hard running right until the end when the sun was coming up again and was very destroyed when I finished.
Happy with my run. Felt like I had a good balance of using the tracking and also going on my own, as well as executing my own plans even when others were around. As usual would really have liked to be without those mistakes and have a time of about 1.37 but for my lack of night orienteering experience I think that is fairly good. Ended up picking up 78 places too so nice to feel I did my job for the team.
