12 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 21:10 intensity: (15 @0) + (3:25 @1) + (8:49 @2) + (5:27 @3) + (3:06 @4) + (8 @5) 3.35 km (6:19 / km) +104m 5:28 / km
ahr:132 max:167 shoes: VJ Supra 14

A much harder than wanted (underfoot) warm up trot along the road to the finish and up to the start.
1 PM

Run - Orienteering race 1:44:30 intensity: (17 @1) + (19 @2) + (17:23 @3) + (1:23:20 @4) + (3:11 @5) 12.15 km (8:36 / km) +551m 7:01 / km

Shamrock O-Ringen, Day 2, Shrone Hill, M21E, 10.0km, 440m, 29 controls.

This was tough, not because of any particular reason, but just the combination of everything. It was awesome! There were areas of tussocks and bare rock, but in general the running was pretty good it was just steep, either climbing, descending or contouring, which made for slow progress.

Technically pretty solid, but that may have been helped by the enforced slow pace, would have been happy to be a minute quicker excluding mistakes, which I'll take an an area like this.

Not many races that I can't break 10mpk, but there were many out there for a whole lot longer! A least the weather was a lot nicer today with even a fez cases of sun burn reported... Excellent course with a really fun bit of forest at the end to catch you out if you were getting lazy (just survived).
2 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 30:28 intensity: (11:41 @0) + (12:42 @1) + (6:05 @2) 1.85 km (16:27 / km) +14m 15:51 / km
ahr:102 max:129 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Back to the house and then back to the forest to collect controls (which thankfully I wasn't needed for).

ahr:128 max:153 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Long walk up the steep hill into the mist.
3 PM

Run - Orienteering race 42:31 intensity: (20 @1) + (15 @2) + (16 @3) + (22:04 @4) + (19:36 @5) 6.98 km (6:06 / km) +195m 5:21 / km
ahr:163 max:174 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Shamrock O-Ringen, Day 1, Cobdubh South, M21E, 6.2km, 190m, 16 controls.

Full from a late lunch so started very slowly, not a bad thing as the mist was down and the map was somewhat over simplified. Deliberately went high for 2, 3 and 4 to be on the safe side, things were going well and lunch had digested a bit so decided to push on a bit... Not such a goof idea on the first downhill leg, promptly lost 2 minutes!

Pulled myself together and was much better to the finish (the mist cleared at #7), though I wasn't reading ahead very well. Pleased to be in the lead but disappointed with the mistake - though much bigger ones were made by others. Overall a very enjoyable course and the mountain was in excellent condition with short grass and was surprisingly dry.
4 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 12:33 intensity: (5:16 @1) + (7:17 @2) 1.8 km (6:58 / km)
ahr:119 max:132 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Down the road to the car park.

ahr:116 max:147

Only Caitlin was interested from MDC in a ride this evening, so set out with her wanting an easy cycle as my legs were pretty tired. She chose a less than easy route which started with a climb up Caerphilly Mtn! Then Rudry Mtn! Undulating after that and a nice route, though I found the hills hard work (she has lower gearing than me and seemed to finding them much easier!). Great to be out and very enjoyable.

Run - Trail 1:09:28 intensity: (3 @0) + (7:16 @1) + (21:42 @2) + (31:27 @3) + (9:00 @4) 11.88 km (5:51 / km) +534m 4:46 / km
ahr:136 max:159 shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite (3)

MDC run around the 'alternative waterfalls' from somewhere at the very back of the Rhondda. Most excellent evening for running and really enjoyed this, despite my legs being well murdered from yesterday and the weekend. Small crowd this evening and Ake, Rcro and I headed out on out own after the first climb. Bargain food and drinks (with excellent chips) after.

10 AM

Run - Trail 2:07:59 intensity: (24 @0) + (3:45 @1) + (49:15 @2) + (45:49 @3) + (23:10 @4) + (5:36 @5) 19.08 km (6:43 / km) +1033m 5:17 / km
ahr:139 max:176 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Fairfield Horseshoe, with Chris and Matt (MDC) and Brendan Bolland. Nice and muggy in the valley which unfortunately turned into mist as soon as we got towards the top of the ridge line. The climb was great, not too steep but it just went on and on for almost an hour, likewise the decent which for the most part was lovely and soft running. Feeling tired but great to be out in the hills for a long run - shame we couldn't see anything for most of it.

Run - Trail warm up/down 15:37 intensity: (1:06 @0) + (3:09 @1) + (1:15 @2) + (2:47 @3) + (7:11 @4) + (9 @5) 2.08 km (7:31 / km) +20m 7:10 / km
ahr:136 max:177 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Round and round.

Run - Orienteering race 39:51 intensity: (9 @1) + (21 @2) + (1:09 @3) + (34:07 @4) + (4:05 @5) 6.45 km (6:11 / km) +224m 5:16 / km
ahr:159 max:171 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Scottish relays, Inverawe, Open, 2nd leg, 5.7km, 280m, 24 controls.

In the first team with Steve F and Daniel S, in the middle as I needed a to leave quickly and Skyhigh was needing to go even sooner. The area made a much better course than I was expecting and was also quite a bit rougher, but I enjoyed that (not so much the big hills).

Technically sound (really only one 10 second miss) but legs didn't have much in them today. We finished third Scottish/British team (close to second) which wasn't too bad considering the age demographic of our team!

Run - Trail warm up/down 10:19 intensity: (3 @0) + (2:14 @1) + (7:21 @2) + (12 @3) + (29 @4) 1.47 km (7:01 / km) +31m 6:20 / km
ahr:112 max:160 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Feeling tired (from Thursday) and hungry (from an early breakfast).

Run - Orienteering race 1:43:52 intensity: (15 @1) + (16 @2) + (4:25 @3) + (1:24:26 @4) + (14:30 @5) 15.59 km (6:40 / km) +434m 5:51 / km
ahr:158 max:170 shoes: VJ Supra 14

Scottish Championships, Ardnaskie & Airds Pak, M21E, 14.2km, 365m, 22 controls.

Legs were more tired than I expected from Thursday and I had failed to eat enough after breakfast, so didn't feel great from the off. Really enjoyable course though with a lovely variety of open, semi-open and woods and some cracking bogs and tussocks to run through.

Held it mostly together technically, though that may have been helped by moving so slowly. Not surprised to be so far down in the results with so many top internationals running, but surprised how far up I finished in the British runners (where were they all?). Well worth the trip.

Long, but relatively pain free day of travelling.

ahr:142 max:166 shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR4

Nice lunchtime run from Newport Wetlands and along the coast path - quite a bit longer than planned. Amazing afternoon, especially when the wind was behind you. First 55 minutes were easy following the coast path, then turned inland and onto overgrown paths and endless styles. One significant hill of 3m, everywhere was dead flat (apart from the endless styles).

Bike - Road 29:31 intensity: (1:17 @0) + (5:14 @1) + (5:22 @2) + (14:29 @3) + (3:09 @4) 13.0 km (2:16 / km) +40m 2:14 / km
ahr:132 max:157

IW. Had a real good section going through the parks until a wee dog decided to ignore me - missed it but it ruined my km split! Also got stuffed on traffic lights, however it was a glorious morning to be out.
5 PM

Bike - Road 36:41 intensity: (2:06 @0) + (5:00 @1) + (15:13 @2) + (11:17 @3) + (54 @4) + (2:11 @5) 14.85 km (2:28 / km) +56m 2:25 / km
ahr:136 max:227

HFW via a massage. Normal evil brute was in Japan and got a right ride of a girl as a replacement, unfortunately she also turned out to to a pain providing brute. Had the chance to take a horse down on the way home but opted out as it's veggie week.

ahr:124 max:161

IW. Got lucky with the wind, the lights and the legs, end result = fastest morning commute yet. No animals were hurt in this endeavour - though two squirrels tried their hardest.
5 PM

Bike - Road 29:11 intensity: (1:55 @0) + (5:10 @1) + (1:02 @2) + (10:49 @3) + (10:15 @4) 12.84 km (2:16 / km) +57m 2:13 / km
ahr:137 max:162

HFW. Had to put a bit of effort in to get back in time for the MDC run. Close call with another squirrel and dumped on by a hail shower just before I got home.
6 PM

Run - Trail 1:01:54 intensity: (23 @0) + (7:13 @1) + (18:15 @2) + (23:28 @3) + (11:51 @4) + (44 @5) 9.38 km (6:36 / km) +426m 5:23 / km
ahr:137 max:167 shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite (3)

MDC run up Fan-y-Big sort of following the Torpantau race route. Nasty start - the first 850m took 10 minutes but once up on top the running was lovely (out of the wind it was anyway). Still had bike legs on and never felt like I could run very well, but found it easy at the same time. Odd. Big slide down the final hill on my arse (intentional, as the faster way, but cold). Managed to miss the showers ans the views were cracking. Had the hills to ourselves.

Monday May 18, 2015 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 29:41 [3] 12.94 km (2:18 / km) +41m 2:15 / km

IW. Pissing it down, but fairly warm. Avoided any contact with animals.
5 PM

Bike - Road 36:35 [3] 14.6 km (2:30 / km) +76m 2:27 / km

HFW via meeting. Dry apart from when it wasn't and also windy apart from when it wasn't. Legs feeling very rested, need to do some more exercise.

Bike - Road 31:44 intensity: (10:23 @0) + (19 @1) + (6:14 @2) + (14:25 @3) + (23 @4) 13.0 km (2:26 / km) +40m 2:24 / km
ahr:112 max:151

IW. Dry getting up, dry eating breakfast, drizzling when cleaning my teeth, raining when I went out to the garage and pissing it down when I left. Also surprisingly cold. The joys of cycle commuting.
5 PM

Bike - Road 32:03 intensity: (7:25 @0) + (4:30 @1) + (12:42 @2) + (7:26 @3) 12.99 km (2:28 / km) +66m 2:24 / km
ahr:112 max:147

HFW. Not feeling up for it this evening but had to keep moving as it was fairly cold and damp, although the heavy rain from earlier in the day had thankfully dissipated.

Wednesday May 13, 2015 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 29:31 intensity: (13 @0) + (1:49 @1) + (6:49 @2) + (20:40 @3) 13.11 km (2:15 / km) +40m 2:13 / km

IW. Nearly ran over a Mr duck who was too busy chasing a Miss duck to pay attention to me. Also saw a jay.
5 PM

Bike - Road 29:52 intensity: (21 @0) + (2:59 @1) + (3:39 @2) + (6:10 @3) + (16:43 @4) 12.14 km (2:28 / km) +56m 2:24 / km
ahr:144 max:161

HFW. Shifting well, but got caught a lot a lights and there were millions of slow cyclists out, so very surprised to be home in under 30.

Tuesday May 12, 2015 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 30:46 [3]

IW. wanting to rain but didn't quite make it.
5 PM

Bike - Road 31:21 [3]

HFW. Almost a peleton... Caught a guy who was moving quick enough but kept slowing right down to pass people, eventually passed him on a different path and also another guy who hopped on my tail. First guy passed me and then slowed down on some bends, so had to pass him again, second guy then went right into the middle of a junction before stopping at lights so he then went off ahead. Exciting this commuting business...

Monday May 11, 2015 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 31:34 [3]

IW. Have misplaced my cable for downloading my GPS, so no data to upload today. Nice morning, dampness in the air but it never got threatening.
7 PM

Bike - Road 27:43 [3]

HF meeting. Loads of people out enjoying the nice evening - observation: while I'd say about 80% of commuter cyclists wear helmets, I'd say only about 20% of leisure cyclists do. Saw a hedgehog.

Sunday May 10, 2015 #

12 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 18:07 intensity: (25 @0) + (5:17 @1) + (2:42 @2) + (3:03 @3) + (3:48 @4) + (2:52 @5) 1.99 km (9:06 / km) +82m 7:33 / km
ahr:136 max:196 shoes: VJ Falcons 14

Feeling stiff warming up, took quite a bit of movement before I was moving okay.

Run - Orienteering race 41:19 intensity: (20 @0) + (50 @1) + (7 @2) + (1:13 @3) + (11:41 @4) + (27:08 @5) 6.99 km (5:55 / km) +173m 5:16 / km
ahr:164 max:178 shoes: VJ Falcons 14

British Middle Championships, Park Wood, Bradenham & Naphill, M21, 6.1km, 155m, 30 controls.

This was the type of race that it was impossible to finish without being frustrated at having lost time, as you were pretty much guaranteed to lose time at some point. Lost most of mine at #2, where I misread the map and lost about 1.45. Much better after that apart from not being able to see#12 (45 seconds) and not being able to understand the map at #20 (30 seconds).

A lot of effort had been put into mapping vegetation on the map, but I don't know why as it didn't represent reality. Realised on the way to #3 that the green was to be ignored as it was all possible to run through. Quite happy with my legs, wasn't moving quickly in the first half but they were finding it very easy and they were still going okay at the end.

Think this is my highest finished in a British individual championships (6th), but that has more to do with a very weak field (Tiomila weekend) than my own performance. So annoying as third would have been quite easy to achieve - but I'm sure all those around me feel the same.
1 PM

Run - Trail 9:08 [1] 1.2 km (7:38 / km) +12m 7:16 / km
ahr:110 max:118 shoes: VJ Falcons 14

A couple laps of the parking field with the camel-back free JT.

ahr:134 max:147

IW. Nice and dry this morning and back on the SS. Wind has brought down all sorts of twiggy rubbish on the cycle paths.
5 PM

Bike - Road 31:16 intensity: (14:50 @1) + (15:42 @2) + (44 @3) 12.85 km (2:26 / km) +62m 2:23 / km

ahr:131 max:148

IW. Got to the garage to discover that my slow puncture had turned into a fast puncture, so had to do a last second change of bike to the road bike, no so nice with no cleats on. So much smoother to ride, but overall no quicker, but my legs are still battered from last weekend.
5 PM

Bike - Road 31:11 intensity: (3:19 @0) + (5:08 @1) + (10:01 @2) + (12:22 @3) + (21 @4) 13.28 km (2:21 / km) +56m 2:18 / km
ahr:124 max:151

HFW. Considering how soggy it was this morning there were a surprising amount of people out and about on bikes. Easy to sail past them without much effort on the road bike.

Wednesday May 6, 2015 #

6 PM

Run - Trail 1:13:23 intensity: (7 @0) + (12:13 @1) + (32:27 @2) + (19:34 @3) + (5:50 @4) + (3:12 @5) 11.36 km (6:28 / km) +355m 5:35 / km

Very slowly around the Wenallt and Caerphilly Mtn with Seamus. Thankfully James was wanting to run slow as my legs were still completely powerless. Still a fair wind about but missed the rain - which there has just been enough of to start making things turn muddy again.

ahr:129 max:175 shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite (2)

MDC run from martin and Kay's in St Brides. Started out in the sun and wind feeling quite good, but as soon as we started running my body informed me that it was actually pretty tired. Trundled along at the back of the group quite thankful that there were plenty of gates and regrouping stops. Wind was joined by rain as we hit the coast, which although spectacular, was somewhat cold and uncomfortable on my bare head - just like Saturday all over again!

Sprint Relay.

For the second time in less than a year I found myself trying to run as hard as my legs would allow in a Sprint - that's not a pretty (or very fast) sight.

Was running the third leg in a Sprint Relay with Susan, Eoin and Olivia, which, thanks to Dooby being a numpty and my teammates running faster than me, we managed to win (you can never have too many travel towels).

First half of the course around the city centre was fun and quite interesting, the second loop no so much and was more just about hanging in for me. Well done team.

Shame there we so few teams and no spectators, but it was a well run wee event and an excellent experience for everyone who's never done an event like this, well done LVO for putting it on.

Easy warm up around the castle, with Toni and a few others at various times. Thankfully the proposal to run the relays as a mass-start for each leg at 10.00, 10.10 and 10.20 was abandoned as the weather turned out grand.

IOC Relays, Hillsborough, 5.9km, 50m, 23 controls. 1st leg with Shane Boyzone and Dooby.

Surprisingly fun little area, though the map was well dodgy in regards to vegetation and, in places, contours. Had Hellsac for company for virtually the entire leg after we both missed #1 hidden in the green. Clean from there to the spectator (having passed the leading group in the between #9 and #10).

Made a small mistake taking the wrong track to #14 and took the safe route around the dark green, only to find that Hugh had gone straight though and pulled out about 20 seconds. Got back together easy enough but both of us went brain dead on #18 (I had no plan or visualisation of what to do after crossing the road). Okay from there back but just out kicked on the line (again!).

Pleased enough with the way I ran for most of it and with the result. Unfortunately both Boyzone and Dooby were a couple of minutes slower which was just enough for Nic to sneak through right at the end to take a maiden win for BOC. No titles for me this year - maybe not time to give up on elite after all...

Up the hill to the start - timed it just right so I didn't have to stand around any longer than needed in the wind and rain.

Run - Orienteering race 1:28:27 intensity: (25 @1) + (17 @2) + (5:44 @3) + (1:12:30 @4) + (9:31 @5) 13.76 km (6:26 / km) +508m 5:26 / km

IOC long, Slieve Croob, 11.6km, 385m, 25 controls.
I'm getting too old for this shit! Very scrappy run; three 1 minute mistakes and maybe 4 30 second misses and maybe maybe a further 4 10-15 seconds ones. Part of this was probably due to the conditions (very windy, wet and cold) as effort was required to keep moving and to have the map folder right etc... Was fun but hard on the body.

Thought I was running quite well but Boyzone was moving a lot quicker. Happy to finish third considering my run and how close everyone was from second onwards. Not so pleased to be 5 mins behind (an uncompetitive) Nick B and a minute behind Eoin McC (for the third race in a row!) - would probably have beaten him had I not run into the wrong field looking for the last control.... Now maybe I can start running my age class!

Warm up round the model map and then to the start (which I had some difficulty finding!).

Run - Orienteering race 15:15 [4] 3.1 km (4:55 / km)

IOC Sprint.
An easy cruise around, lost quite a lot on #3 where I couldn't see if a fence was crossable due to it overlapping with the control circle, but otherwise just steady and straight forward. SI Air was fun but would take quite a few races to work out just how close to the unit and how fast you can run fast to get the best out of it - also realised that I didn't check the codes as I didn't have to look at the units). Well down overall but happy enough considering eh effort that I put in.
